Last year Tkachuk takes Scheiffle out of the playoffs. This year Scheiffle takes himself out. Derp.
Kind of hoping for a sweep now. That hit was all kinds of wrong.
I loathe MTL but I really dislike WPG.
What Scheiffle did was a literal self inflicted shotgun blast to the face. Takes out a 4th liner and himself, a #1 C in the process. It's a good look.

I was already hoping for a sweep, I just didn't care which team. Now, go Montreal.

Reckless play that may have cost his team the best look at the Final Four they will ever get.

Yeah, I think it's especially obvious when you watch the difference between Pionk and Scheifele coming back. They're both skating hard side-by-side, but at a certain point, Pionk shuts down and Scheifele switches into "hit" mode.

Hey they had a conference finals appearance against Nashville a few years ago. But point still stands.

They played the Knights the 2018 WCF after beating Nashville in the 2nd round.

The hit is suspension worthy for sure. But whatever happened to keeping your head up? That was always rule #1 when playing hockey as a kid. Evans could have had a chance to protect himself if he had his head up or took a quick peak even. I just think that, while Evans isn't to blame, he could have had a chance to soften the blow a little. Not long ago having your head down like that was basically an invitation to get crushed, ESPECIALLY in the playoffs.

Keeping your head up was gone years ago. Like it used to be running slants in the NFL will get the wide receiver killed. Now you have to hug a receiver to the ground.

If a player has their head down, I agree that getting a hard clean is fine and a predictable outcome.
But players shouldn't expect to get blatantly hit with illegal hits. I get that there is a fine line sometimes and rules get unintentionally broken, but what Sheifele did was beyond that. He intentionally crossed the line and Evans shouldn't expect that.

I bet Eric Lindros wishes he played in this era. He would break Gretzkys scoring records and win multiple championships. There’d be no stopping him.

I bet he does too. The rules have changed so the league has less chance of losing guys like Lindros

I'm not sure what this post is intended to imply. Are you saying this would be a bad thing? I mean, he almost certainly wouldn't break Gretzky's records, but he'd be a superstar for a lot longer than he was able to be. How is that not a win for the sport?

Like Girly said, this has changed.
The onus now is 100% on the player delivering the check. A player having their head down or putting themselves in a vulnerable position is featuring less and less in the discipline videos.

It's mostly good but you still want to have a competition and a fair battle between offense and defense. I don't think we'd want hockey to be like the NBA where it's an exhibition more than a competition, where games are now reaching 250+ points. And we certainly don't want to be getting into players with their heads down having the right of way discussions.

actually thought DOPS would shy away from a big suspension due to the fact Scheifele doesn't have a record.
That said, I think the suspension is fair based on the play itself. I know I'd be pretty livid if someone lit up a Calgary player on a play like that.

To me this one isn’t really watching your pass or keeping your head down though.
He’s going behind the net and you see Evans does take a peak up, before doing what he should be doing and focusing on putting the puck in the back of the net to seal the game.
I don’t think any player expects a guy to come 150 feet down the ice on a back check and just blow you up in that situation, especially since they are too late to actually stop a goal.
Just a selfish and gutless play by Scheifele and not a “keep your head up” situation at all IMO.
