FW at least. More options in the 9-14 range than anywhere else.

If this draft gets crazy and those big D men fall to us, then I don't think you can pass any of them up. Hughes,Edvinsson,Clarke are really really good.

I hope the flames take this guy then. Given our mediocre everything, I’d love to see a risk reward pick. If it doesn’t pan out that’s the risk you take, but in a less deep draft I hope we make a type of pick like this

Alternately if we pick Lambos I will be disappointed. Definite "Sutter" pick and there are much higher upside guys available in that range. This team needs upside (badly).

It's not a bad pick, but if Lysell were the "most dynamic, game-changing player in the draft", you'd think he would get more than 3 points in 26 games.
I get that it's a mens league (and Lysell didn't get a ton of good minutes), but for someone who is a game-changer, he sure doesn't appear to change games much.

I know prospects with these underwhelming totals in mens leagues do often end up scoring eventually. But I just think there's a lot of unnecessary risk in projecting future production based off of non-existent scoring.
On top of the lower point totals, Lysell is also small, light, and is not a center. However, to be fair, Lysell did produce pretty much everywhere except the SHL. And if the Flames did pick him, I would be fine with it. I would trust Loob's input. And the Flames would start to build an overwhelming Swedish culture, which is funny.


Matthew Coronato is similar in size and position. He's not quite as good at skating. But he has some of the best production in the draft. There's risk with Harvard players, but no top 12 picks should ever spend more than 3 years in the NCAA.

13. Calgary Flames: Fabian Lysell, LW, Lulea HF (SHL)
The Flames could use some pure skill — enter Lysell. The crafty winger oozes skill, thanks to his great speed and quick hands. Lysell is a player that can take over a game when he wants to, carrying his team’s offense. The prospect had a solid season, despite minimal minutes at the SHL level. He was Sweden’s best forward at the U18 championship and could be a great fit in Calgary.

I know nothing about these players but 100% plan to be very angry if the Flames don't end up picking the player who is falling in the draft based on projections.

I am ok if the Flames draft Wallstedt. If a goalie is the best available pick at 12, then pick him, period. I believe that the Flames are a very good drafting team now, and if Wallstedt is picked, I won't bat an eye. The more you read about him, the more you actually hope he gets selected.


I even say this as being more positive about the current goaltending prospects on the Flames.


Parsons - I see him as the 'real deal, big game goalie'. He has shown it in the Memorial Cup, The World Juniors, and especially in the playoffs in his draft +1 year. If the game is a big game, he is likely to be the best player on the ice for both teams. I feel confident in saying that it is really difficult to find a goalie prospect like him. However, as we all know, his progression has been derailed so far with his injuries and personal issues. Will he get back on track? I hope so, and for as long as he is Flames' property, I will refuse to give up on him. I do think that he gets re-signed for this season, and it may just be his last unless it turns around for him.


Wolf - really strong goalie too. People doubt his size, but I don't. The only doubt I have is that he plays in front of a really strong defensive team. However, maybe this is actually a bit of a strength? NHL teams don't give up as much as junior teams of course, so perhaps playing behind a really good defensive team has actually been better for his development, and he is becoming more 'pro ready' than we realize. I am eager to see him at the next level. Just like Parsons (who I really love), who knows what can happen at the next level.



People forget about the 'other guys' too.


Zagidullin - I have no idea how good he is or not. Doesn't seem like it to me, but he is the most nhl-ready (closest at any case). I just don't see him as a starter. Maybe I am wrong.


Chechelev - wasn't thought of enough in his draft year to get picked, in his second year Calgary noticed him and liked him enough to spend a pick on him, and then he goes on to be incredible for a while. He came back down to Earth a little bit, but still showed himself to be a goalie that is tracking fairly well. Definitely an organizational asset here, but not someone that you can definitively count on either.


So, I am ok with taking Wallstedt. I doubt he will be available at 12. He is tracking as elite right now. I am 100% fine at drafting anyone at any position that can become an elite-talent at the NHL level. If it is a goalie, well, maybe that's perhaps the most important spot anyway.


I doubt it happens, but I do trust the Flames as a strong drafting team now. I will be excited probably regardless of who they draft, but this does include selecting a goalie.
