The argument that he should have played the puck or whatever isn’t relevant. Nor does it really matter if he thought he could have stopped the goal. It doesn’t change what happened.

He wanted to make him sorry for scoring vs. wanting to make a player sorry for playing the puck along the boards? Finishing a check occurs all the time after the puck has gone.

What is egregious here is the distance travelled IMO. A less violent hit and we’re not talking about it. But this was dangerous and should be punished.
To dive, stick first, in an attempt to deflect the puck. It’s his only chance in that play.

A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner
I'm not sure the refs decision on match penalty or not matters much on a 2 goal game with 56 seconds left. They saw it full speed and probably didn't bother reviewing it, knowing the league would...

We were just talking about the charging rule. I just quoted it earlier on this page. I assume the reason you missed that is that you cannot, in fact, read. Which is unfortunate for you, but given that you made this post, not surprising. Get bent.
I'm not sure how much difference an extra stride would have made since he was already at full speed. Speed skaters don't stride to the finish line, they stop stride short and stretch their leg. Same principle here would've been actually reaching with his stick.

As Evans brings the puck back across the goal line Scheifele's feet are already at the edge of the crease. He could have played the puck.

The NHL rulebook doesn't account for every single scenario. Charging may even be intentionally ambiguous for situations like this.

Probably the best option, but I think he's 50/50 to get there reaching with his stick on his feet, too.

Hope Evans is okay.

Schiefele is going to be suspended for the series and likely costs the Jets a chance at the conference finals

Either way, more likely to stop the goal than hitting Evans at the goal line.

That’s not really the point. I’m just pointing out that suggesting Schiefele had no intent of stopping the goal is not the issue here. If he hits Evans a split second earlier and the luck squirts loose, are you good with the play?

Shows the geometry of the situation... Sheifele went for the hit, plain and simple, nothing to do with the goal being scored.

Much more so. The intent of stopping the goal or not is a big issue for me.

Wouldn't diving stick first pretty much mean he's going head first into the post or Evans skates? I can agree that's probably what he should have done but chances are he does get injured at that speed. Even reaching with his stick probably is going to get himself hurt because if he reaches at that speed he's still going to hit Evans or the net except now he's in a vulnerable position.

I really didn't like the hit and hope Evans is ok but I'm not sure exactly what Scheifele is expected to do there down 1 goal.

Loved the Suzuki goal. Pretty nifty.

Scheifele should probably stick to ripping off private chefs. What a POS.

He doesn't have to explode through the guy.

Rugby has all kinds of rules like this, safety protocols even for big hits, and the players manage to execute them correctly in split seconds game after game. It's quite do-able.

Sheifele decided to explode a guy, and was successful.

Cassie made a great point on the panel later, Sheifele was just in super-frustrated rage-mode all night, there were a number of scrums etc and his eyes are just bulging out, he's in full chimpanzee rage mode.

So he's not quite right in the head through this game, and it ends up he blows a guy to pieces.

Going off the ice, you see him glance back to the rink with obvious regret and even understanding in his eyes, like he knows he just offered a guy a career-threatening hit for no reason at all, and he knows too that he's not gonna see the ice again in this series.

Too little, too late.

It’s still a flagrant case of charging and injuring a defenseless player IMO. Even if the puck is on his stick when he hits him.

Yes, but IMO intent to injure (and having only that intent) is a hugely aggravating factor. Murder versus manslaughter.

Just a gutless, chicken Sh## play. He should be ashamed of himself and I don't see how he doesn't get 6 game to ensure he doesn't play in the series

HOWEVER: It was a textbook hit minus the situation. Arms down, head wasn't principle point of contact, no jumping, etc.

The cleanest dirty play I've ever seen. Will be interesting how it's judged by the league.

What a gutless coward. I’d like to see how Maurice defends this after crying like a little bitch last year about Tkachuk.

Wonder how tough he’d be back in the day when he’d have to answer to a Chris Nilan.
