I just can't wrap my head around that. In little league every player knows to tag the base at first, you never try to tag the player. How the hell does someone make the majors and still attempt that crap?
In practice yes but it happens that it's easier to tag the runner when you get pulled off the bag. What has never happened in the history of baseball is that the runner chooses to run back home and put themselves in a rundown between first and home. Let's not put it all on the Pirates here either. Baez stood there admiring the run, played umpire making the safe call when he should have been booking it to first.
So much of baseball is situational and routine plays made on cruise control. Anything that short circuits an expected event, usually causes a cascading series of eff ups.
On offense, if you can cause havoc within the rules, anything can happen on defense.
This unintentional trick play is kind of similar to a known one. It's actually an interesting modification as it would work in LL Minors and Majors leagues because it doesn't require taking a lead...
"The Outfield Walk"
Runner on third, first and second empty... batter draws a walk.
Runner jogs up the line, touches first base and keeps going all the way to the foul pole.
Turn toward the right and just stand there.
Most likely the pitcher will throw to 1B and they will start to follow the runner to try and tag them. The runners baseline is a path between the point at which the break for second and second so as long as the stay in a line between the foul pole and second they can get in a rundown with most likely the CF and 1B.
At this point you send the runner on third home and the confusion between a guy running home and a crazy person running through the outfield to second it just starts the madness and someone will overthrow somewhere.
Sorry, probably belongs in the baseball thread. I miss coaching Little League.

^You're putting a lot of faith in a little league umpire knowing the minutae of the rulebook there.

There's a Korean band called BTS who have a meal named after them at McDonald's. There's an indie rock band called Built To Spill that's been around for decades that gets called BTS by fans and that's their album covers on the food. Obscure, but funny for those in the know.
