If Beniers starts falling he would be an amazing player to trade up and snag.
Would be really nice if the flames were in a draft position to essentially guarantee one of he, Guenther, or Eklund.

Good coaches can translate strong skating into smart defensive play.

I've been on the skating thing for a while now. I'm tired of "he can't skate that well, but is smart, has great hands and positions well, etc". The problem is that, IMO, skating is the thing that stops a lot of great juniors from being great NHLers. You can stickhandle through a team of junior guys, most of whom will never even be pros, let alone NHLers. But in the show, you have to be able to skate, with very few exceptions.

And it seems to becoming more and more important.
It is what is holding back guys like Dylan Strome and now Monny. When Monny was healthy and had Johnny to set him up near the net, he was a good goal scorer. Now injuries seem to have robbed him of his great shot, and his lack of good speed makes him just another guy. Strome was only effective when Kane was setting him up.

Man, Lysell is a pretty big sleeper pick. Should do some youtubing on him. Especially some of his U18 work. He just might have the 2nd best motor in the draft behind Beniers.
And for the record, Beniers just hustles every second of his shift, he's not the fastest, nor the slowest skater but he has the best motor in the draft. Lysell is right there in my opinion.

You open up so many opportunities with speed. If only Dube had better IQ, he could be dangerous.
Fabian Lysell or Nikita Chibrikov is my hope.

Now my hampster wheel is turning trying to figure out who id want if the Flames managed to win the lottery.
Do you go Eklund? I dont know if I go Beniers over Clarke or Edvinson. Im not bullish on Power. Does hughes move the needle more than Eklund?
I think when it comes down to it all, id take Eklund in a lottery win. But Clarke or Edvinsson are so hard to pass up as well.

If we won the lottery it’s between Powers, Clarke, and Eklund for me. Powers has the higher ceiling, Eklund has the higher floor.

1. Beniers
2. Guenther
3. Clarke
4. Eklund
5. Power
Personally I don't see it with Lysell. He has wheels but IMO needs big ice for success.

Kid scored 29 goals as a 16/17 year old rookie in the OHL.
He scores. He hits. He plays a 200 foot game.
He's gonna be good.
In my opinion.
Edit: To add to that, he's been playing in the Swiss Hockey League this season, he's been playing against men in Pro Hockey and doing what he does best, scores.
The kid just flat out scores at every level he has ever played at.
That's something you can't teach.

If the Flames won the lottery, I would go for Guenther because he had 2 points per game.
For a weak draft year, it's kind of surprising that someone was able to do that (albeit the sample size was small).
Plus he's 6'1 and is a right handed winger. It's often a good idea to just go with whichever player has a good NHLe. He's also a great skater. Only problem is that he's from Edmonton. But Calgary has had good Edmontonian right wingers before.

Guenther gets it done but I want a guy that can go coast to coast. Seems a lot of his goals are more feeds in the slot. After watching the Avs vs Knights so far, we need game changing speed. Who in this draft has that?

If we win the lottery, we trade down to 8th and get an extra first rounder in 2022.
