Corporatejay made a good point earlier when he mentioned that a montage of Phaneuf hits or Iggy goals might be a little more appropriate for a hockey game, and I agree with that. But some of you guys have got to be kidding (or else gay) (not that there's anything wrong with that [/seinfeld]) if you don't like seeing good looking women at games, either on the scoreboard during a montage, or walking around between periods.

I thought I was on a hockey messageboard, not a Little House on the Prairie messageboard.
I don't get how you can say they aren't using sex to sell the product but then go on to say they are using it as entertainment. I think using it as entertainment is in turn using it to sell the game. You see hot girls in a Flames video, jumping around in tight shirts or whatnot, I think that is selling a certain fan experience that's meant to specifically to appeal to the boys. And I get it, men like seeing it.

My issue is that it is almost exclusively selling the game to men. Female fans seemingly get little attention paid to them. I hate to harp on the NHL's marketing campaign, cause they did give us ladies those alluring and ultra feminine pink jersies and hats, but good Lord, give us something! Most guys have said they don't really care what's up on the screen, so if this is the case, why would it be so bad if they gave the hot men in the crowd a little more screen time to peak our interest, or at least something else to make it a little more even to appease both sexes in attendance?

Or as you have suggested, just use hockey highlights, I think everyone would be happy with that, and you boys can do your girlwatching without the help of the jumbotron.

People have already purchased their way into the building. They are now entertaining.

If they had TV commercials with girls making out in the stands of the dome, I'd consider it to be using sex to sell their product.

Yes, they have purchased their tickets already and showing this just might prompt them to buy tickets to the next game. They've got you in the arena right now, but now they are advertising to keep you coming back.

And what about the fact that the video is on cf.com, where people can go and view it whenever, could you not argue that it's using sex to sell in that instance, because it's there, I am sure, to sell the experience and in turn sell tickets?

Well, I suppose we are arguing a grey area... I just don't see it the same as what I consider using sex to sell something. Beer companies with bikini clad women playing volleyball, twix commercials where the chick is on top of the guy screaming 'give it to me', thats what I consider using sex to sell something.

A video montage that has pics and clips of all kinds of flames fans and also happens to include to hot girls kiss just isn't the same kind of thing IMO.
Neither is the smoochcam, or random jumbotron shots of hot girls in the stands.
You're already there. You can see the people in the crowd. Half the time they're focussing in on a kid with a sign or a 40 or 50 year old lady in an Iggy jersey. Sometimes they zoom in on some buffed up shirtless guy with a flaming c painted on his chest.
Theoretically, you could argue that all those shots are selling sex to one person or another.

I knew the "what are you guys, gay or something?" comment was coming. Its not about not liking to look at hot women, scantily clad women, or anything like that. Any heterosexual man enjoys that stuff, and so do I...but there's a time and place to see two girls making out..and the Saddledome isn't it...especially with kids and families around. If you are going to allow kids, I think its fair to ask for no adult entertainment on the jumbotron. As far as things like ice girls, yes they are harmless, and yes they are hot. But to me, it cheapens the integrity of the game. Its like, "hey our game isn't exciting enough, here's some T'n'A to grab your attention". Like I said, you don't see that kind of thing in sports in traditional sports like soccer in europe...I think its because they respect the history and culture of the game and don't need cheap tricks to make people pay attention. But I guess its because europeans are gay, eh?

So you don't like the gay comment? Why is that? Because it's ok to be gay? Well if so, then why is two girls kissing 'adult entertainment', but a husband and wife not?

A kiss is a kiss. It's not adult entertainment.

No that's not why I didn't like it actually. I didn't like it because you assume that guys who don't think 2 girls making out on the jumbotron is a good thing at 'the Dome are gay. Which isn't the case.

And come on, let's get real, when you, me, and any other hetero guy are watching 2 hot females make out, the last thing on our mind is gay rights. Its much more sexually explicit than a husband and wife kiss.

From you guys using making out in your comments you’d think they were going at it hard. Don’t they just do a quick closed mouth kiss in that video or am I completely wrong.

Do you honestly believe a quick 3 second clip of a girl kissing another is the Flames trying to sell tickets? No one is going to go out and buy flames tickets because they might see a quick clip of girls kissing.

It is all part of selling an experience. 'Look at the good time you could be having, you could be right here, seeing the Flames and some hot chicks who may or may not kiss.' It's all part of it. Might not be the sole reason, but it doesn't hurt. Whatever works, whatever gets butts in the seats. Furthermore, if it's not to sell the game in some sense, then why is it included in the fan video at all? There are lots of other clips of fans that would be more fitting, but they chose to put that one in there, why, if not to appeal to male fans?

Again, I don't necessarily object to them showing the girls, what I object to is the lack of anything for women shown on the videos. I would like them to either show something for the women in the audience or stop showing the hot chicks and instead show hockey highlights, something that will appeal to everyone.

Run a Google image search for the generic term "soccer fans" and look at the results. It's pretty much the same mix of rowdy men and underdressed women you'll see on the Saddledome Jumbotron.

There will also be a link to images from this page, which proves that underdressed female fans are not limited to any one sport or any one nation: http://ueba.net/hosted_pages/Female-...C2006-20060618

If you want a real eye-full, search for "Brazilian soccer fans". You'll see stuff that would get you kicked out of the Saddledome.

I've never been to a European soccer game, but I assume that if they have Jumbotrons inside their stadiums, they will show shots of the crowd on the Jumbotrons. Assuming they have male camera operators, I would think they'll show a number of young, attractive females on the big screen.

Because soccer doesn't run as a stop-time game, they might show more continuous "action" on the screen than they do at a hockey game, but I would attribute that to the increased number of stoppages in a hockey game more than I would to any level of respect the Europeans have for their game.

At the Olympics in Italy last year they had scantily-clad cheerleaders dancing in the aisles at all of the hockey games.

If the video was apart of some ad campaign I’d agree it's there to sell the experience but you’re already at the Dome when they show it.

Nothing for women, you’re probably right. But i haven't seen any guys kissing at games, nor do I know many women who find men kissing attractive so they obviously couldn’t put that in. Their are guys in the video without shirts on. What in your opinion could they do for the women fans?

Honestly they could take out the girls kissing in the video or ask the camera men not to show attractive women on the jumbotron, I doubt I would even notice as I’m more worried the game then checking out some girls on the Tron.

I wasn't talking about fans..wherever you have people, you will have attractive females..with some who dress less than others. I'm talking about the organization playing it up..like the smooch cam on 2 young hotties or the ice girls..you don't see that (much) over there, in soccer at least. I've been to a premeirship game and the only thing happening was the game. Granted, yes, the continuous nature of the game is a reason, but even at half there was little for the fans to do other than go get a drink. It would be an interesting experiment to replace the groundsmen with hot females though.

Like I said in an earlier post, I'm a traditionalist when it comes to sport, and don't believe gimmicks of any type, sexual or not, are really necessary for crowd interaction/enjoyment.

Because they want you to enjoy your experience so that you come back. The Molson execs don't think 'well, we've managed to sell you one beer. That's good enough, let's move on.' No, they want your continued patronage. They want you to buy more, and it's the same with the Dome. They want you to enjoy your experience so you will buy tickets to the next game.

True, I don't think there is any demand to see two men kissing. I'm sure there are some ladies that wouldn't mind seeing that, but speaking for myself, no, I would not like to see that at all and have never asked for that.

As for what they could do to appeal to more female fans, perhaps easing up on the (faux) lesbian stuff, easing up on showing mainly scantily clad women, maybe they could add a couple of hot men to the Fire and Ice crew. (I should add that I haven't ever been to the Dome so I don't know if there are any men in the crew or what they wear if there are men). Those are a few suggestions that might be something to evenly 'entertain' both sexes.

Yeah, when the game is on, I am watching the game and enjoying the hockey. Typically, they aren't showing guys or girls during the game, they are showing the game. It's during gamebreaks, when everyones attention is typically on the screen, that they show the hot ladies and the kiss cam and all that other stuff.

Like I have said, just make it more equal for both sexes to enjoy the cheap gimmicks or don't have them at all.

(I am hoping that makes sense, I am wicked tired right now.)

The guys that are sitting on here and preaching it's okay and their doing nothing wrong are the ones that like it, now no matter what you say it's the female fan that should matter because that is the one you're alienating at the game. It would be different if they were showing random fans at the game and just going through the crowd in Flames apparel but it's funny how every game I go to it's about the same type of girl the blonde in lower bowl with no clothing/signs/flags anything at all related to the Flames, yet they get on the jumbotron but the 4 little kids screaming their heads off in Flames gear are crap, or those 4 girls in Flames jersey that can't wait to get on the jumbotron, but nope it's the ones that have nothing to do with the Flames. And to the person that said the saddledome isnt using sex to sell on the jumbotron couldn't be more wrong, why else are they up there? why else are there ice girls? no I thought they wear those tops because it's super hot in the dome. It's 2007 look around in the Dome there are a TON of girls there how about a little something for them? and no the players dont cut it, missing teeth and bruised eyes isn't exactly sexy.

Way to generalize there. I think its ok, and I really don't care. Those aren't my kind of girls (dark hair and tattoos usually for me), and I really don't care if they are shown or not. Every game I've gone to I haven't noticed that only show bimbo types are on the jumbotron. To me it seems like a pretty good mix of the crowd thats shown. I remember seeing girls that have pretty faces in flames jerseys a lot. I know I've seen tons of kids on the jumbotron, I've seen guys not wearing shirts on the jumbo tron...

I'm curious what you'd like to be shown on the jumbotron for the ladies? Guys that you think are hot? I know I've seen girls that I don't think are attractive on the jumbotron, should that bother me?

Once again, just because they aren't wearing a ton of flames gear does that mean they know nothing about hockey or are not fans? I know girls who would probably fit into the category you are describing who may not wear a ton of flames gear but know more than a lot guys do about hockey..

I don't know, the argument that they are using sex to sell hockey is weak imo. I'm sure that the majority of fans who have tickets do not buy them because there might be a hot girl shown on the jumbotron. Its not like the guys who see these girls get to talk to them etc, its like looking at a hot girl on tv.. They could easily go to a night club and see girls wearing less, watch muchmusic, or they could use the internet for the reason it was invented and look at half naked women on a screen at home and save a ton of money. (kidding about naked women being the internet's main purpose )

I know what is shown on the jumbotron does not even enter my mind when I purchase tickets. All I care about is that I can go to the game, enjoy a beer and hopefully watch the Flames kick the crap out of the opposition. I've never known anyone to purchase tickets to a Flames game because of the jumbotron... Its just filler, there's only so many lame video clips, contests etc they can show on the tron...

I apologise I shouldn't generalize.

Yes they do show children and men on the jumbotron and I'm not saying they only show those bimbo's but they do generally try and target what they believe to be pretty. I dont care show them all you want I would just like something in return, or how about putting up a girl who is pretty and in Flames gear. This doesn't bother me THAT MUCH at the game because I ignore it but at the NYE game I remember them putting on two blonde girls on the jumbotron and there were two average looking girls next to them in complete Flames gear and the jumbotron just went right past them, way to make them feel real good.

I'm curious what you'd like to be shown on the jumbotron for the ladies? Guys that you think are hot? I know I've seen girls that I don't think are attractive on the jumbotron, should that bother me?

What I would like to see on the jumbotron is none of the sex stuff, I would rather watch the signs people brought to the game, hockey highlights, highlights from around the NHL, opponent fans so we can boo them lol, and sure if you need to fill a few minutes go through the crowd but for the love of God try to be fair and not just place the girls you think are pretty on there.

Once again, just because they aren't wearing a ton of flames gear does that mean they know nothing about hockey or are not fans? I know girls who would probably fit into the category you are describing who may not wear a ton of flames gear but know more than a lot guys do about hockey..

I dont dress in head-to-toe Flames gear and I fit perfectly into that category and I've already said not all of them are not hockey fans, but considering 98% of my friends look like that and go to the game because it's cool I tend to lean towards the majority aren't (personal experience I guess).

I don't know, the argument that they are using sex to sell hockey is weak imo. I'm sure that the majority of fans who have tickets do not buy them because there might be a hot girl shown on the jumbotron. It's there to entertain the male fan and it's not the reason you comletley buy tickets but come on if there entertaining you how about a little for me?

I think it's much different when you're a girl I guess that's where the opinion varies. Whatever at the end of the day I wont cry myself to sleep I hate attention anyways ..... why is it so hard to find a decent guy at the Dome, I dont want to settle for the toothless millionaires on the ice. I guess I have it better then you boys, you get to just watch the players while me on the other hand take the fan/player relationship to a whole new level. I'm only JOKING!

Fair enough, I've honestly never really felt like they were only showing "hot girls" maybe I'm just not paying enough attention. Pretty girls in flames gear don't bother me either! I'll definitely pay more attention next time!

Well I'm fine with none of the sex stuff, but like I've said earlier it doesn't bother me either way.

Hmm, maybe the guys they do show are hot to some, but not all? I know that even when they show a pretty girl that isn't my type, I can admit she is attractive and most often 9 out of 10 guys will probably admit the same. I know few girls who all think that the same guy is attractive. Maybe thats part of the difference? Thats just personal experience, whenever I've been around my gf, and there are other girls around and some guy comes on tv or something that one girl thinks is hot, another girl is saing eww. But when I sit around with a few buddies and hot girl comes on, even if we have different tastes we can agree she is attractive or at least somewhat attractive at least we agree with the gf's aren't around!! Maybe the male mind is a little simpler!

Yes but if their filling it with hot girls for you how about some hot guys for me? just be fair that's all I ask. I guess I have it better then you boys, you get to just watch the players while me on the other hand take the fan/player relationship to a whole new level. I'm only JOKING!

See reply above!! Yes I think they should start putting players on the ice who aren't in as good as shape as me so that the puckbunnies will pay more attention to me! Kidding! Not a fan of puckbunnies, they typically lack the piercings and tattoos!

The jumbotron is for entertainment. As much as we would like it to primarily show replays and other hockey highlights, it doesn't. It mostly consists of ads, saddledome promotions and crowd shots. Not everyone is as big hockey fans as the members of Calgarypuck. Lots of people there have short attention spans and or don't take hockey as seriously. Those are the people that get the most out of the entertainment on the jumbotron. I would like to see more replays and scores from around the league like most people in this thread. But them showing good looking women is not a bad substitute in my opinion.

I see the point the feminist movement in this thread is making, and it is valid.

But at the same time, the majority of hockey fans are men, not women- so you end up targetting the largest segment.
