When I say ball cap, I mean like this - not some sweat-lined Blue Jays cap (which I'm wearing on a Zoom call right now!) or a Flames cap from Young Guns era. Something like a Stussy cap, maybe a five-panel cap from a fashion brand.


This wasn't far off what I wore to my current job interview. My one suit was darker,so I matched it well with a low-profile tweed ball cap and a pair of fresh III's I had snagged. I mean hell, right down to the Wayfarers, it's snazzy, modern and most importantly, comfortable look if you must be in a suit. (edit: no pocket square though - I can't make one work)

The CMO who hired me said one thing that stood out was my confidence to show up the way I did. I'm sure other execs may have had a different take, but I wouldn't want to work anywhere where I couldn't bring my whole self to the job. It's extremely privileged, but I'm also really good at what I do in marketing/advertising.

Please tell me you didn't comb the front half of your hair, and put the hat on like that putz? Wear the hat properly, or comb your hair.

yeah I wouldn't be caught dead with the hat worn like that, plus I've shaved my head since 2003, so it would look awful.

There are watch guys and there are shoe guys. They will tell you that you need to get a nice watch/shoes because that's what they notice when they look at someone. They then easily judge you based on your choice.

Both are terrible people to generally be around as they just want to talk about their sick watch collection when the general population couldn't care less.

Yes, newsflash, people like talking about the things they're personally interested in. I can talk about fancy kitchen knives, or board games, or cars, or hockey, or skiing, for long periods of time and enjoy it. I'm sure - in fact I know - that there are large swaths of the population that don't care about those topics, but I do. Other people might like watches. Why begrudge people their interests?

It’s not about what you can talk about, it’s what you do talk about... ad nauseam, if given the opening, and despite the audience.

Watch guys are definitely bad for it. But this literally applies to anyone with this kind of moderately obscure interest. Like specialised diet people.

You can like whatever you want. Just certain things attract more weirdos with odd social skills who can’t read a room.

Also, weaves are dope. I have a pair of AE Boca Ratons that are gorgeous, if not exceptionally hard to fit into my wardrobe.

I didn’t mean to begrudge someone for their interests or talking about them with people who also enjoy Those interests. So I will apologize for that.

Watch people in particular love to talk about watches despite feigned disinterest. Also judgy. I doubt you judge people for having ikea kitchen knives as it isn’t for everyone.

If the OP asked for watch advice he can go to the watch thread. To say it’s required item to look fashionable is ridiculous

I brought up watches and certainly don't judge people for not being passionate about them.

The OP made this thread in 2019, it's a general discussion about style now and I don't see why me suggesting a good watch as an accessory is any more offensive than someone who suggested certain shoes, ties, hats, undershirts, pocket squares etc.

It's perfectly reasonable that some people don't like watches or care to talk about them but noting them in a discussion about style is reasonable too.

It sounds like a sore spot, maybe based on past experiences you've had with some watch folks.
This should be a light hearted thread and I definitely didn't mean to introduce any tension.

It was the closest clear Google Image I could find for how to make it work. I definitely think the look works better on a well-built guy like myself and not a twink.

Sorry when I meant OP I mean the most recent poster asking for advice. Watches just seem a little too much for someone asking genera advice on dressing better or looking younger. I would also say the show discussion got a little too much from many of the show guys.

But yes general discussion on the topic for sure. My comments were directed more at the most recent advice question.

100% it’s anecdotal experience. I know not all watch guys are the same. I just know a lot of the same type. To them a nice watch is a status symbol that follows you and is more of a quest for status or superiority than a straight up enthusiast - similar to the conversation in another thread about Tesla owners being smug.

A true enthusiasm for watches and their design and construction is cool by me though. It’s a neat hobby, one I don’t find particularly interesting but I certainly don’t wish to disparage anyone for their interests.

As a watch person, this is a really weird take. If I'm wearing one of my Rolexes (or any other watch on bracelet or rubber strap for that matter), I'm wearing it all day. Why in the world would I take it off for a bike ride of all things? It's a sports/tool watch.

Golf is a different story, I would never wear a mechanical timepiece while golfing, but that's due to the forces transferred through the golf club to the innards of the movement -- especially automatic watches.

Here's why I would take my watch off when I ride my bike. I sweat and if it's sunny out I have sunscreen on. I don't want to be sweating on my watch or getting sunscreen on/in it. If it's cold and I have my arm warmers and/or gloves on, I wouldn't want a watch underneath.

It makes literally zero sense to wear a Rolex, or similar watch, while I'm on a 3 hour bike ride or in a bike race. These watches are designed to tell time. They aren't designed to be a watch you use while cycling. Go to their website and you'll see it paired with tennis, golf, equestrian, race cars, and yachting. While I am biking I have a Garmin computer right below my face. It shows me my speed, watts, cadence, distance, speed, time, calories, elevation, and heart rate. It also has GPS with maps on it to show me routes or just what street I am on. When I am done my workout, race, or ride it uploads automatically to Strava, where I can see all of my stats, and compare it against myself and other people. A Rolex does none of those things, besides telling the time. And for that, I would have to take my hand off the handlebars and lift my arm up in order to see what time it was, or I could just keep my position on look down at the computer.

If you are biking to dinner, sure keep your Rolex on. If you are wearing spandex and cycling up mountains, leave the Rolex at home. I also don't wear my dress watches when I go to the gym for the same reasons. I know some people like the fitbit or Apple watches for the gym, but I don't like have anything on my wrists when I run. I use a chest strap for heart rate. Orangetheory records everything for me.
