I'm not happy. I totally understand the entire thing.
I still want Ron Maclean to ride off into the sunset and to never be heard from again.
Not because of this nothingburger mind you. Just in general.
I feel like Hometown Hockey arose from some technicality where they had him riding off into the sunset and he ended up somehow taking a camera crew, maybe as hostages, and the negotiations ended up with the lose-lose that it is

Yes please. Keep in mind Ron would do anything to save his own skin including selling out his co-worker of 33 years (and the star of the show).
The writing was on the wall when they brought in Strombo to replace him. Most self respecting people would seek greener pastures (ie Conan). Old Ron waited in the wings (ie Leno) with his new vehicle Hometown Hockey (barf) like a good CBC/ Sportscaster shill. Zero respect for his practices or his folksy old timey broadcasting. That may offend some you old timey broadcasting fans but you just knew the minute it happened he was coming up with his full page apology to appease the powers that be at the Mother Corp/ Sportsnet.

I didn't think it was a big deal and, knowing plenty of worse people, have trouble getting upset when someone who shows themselves to be supportive says the wrong thing or something that can be taken the wrong way.
But you just pointed out the reason he had to make the statement. Most people misinterpreted it, so he clarified what he meant. This seems like a good resolution, I don't know why we're now begrudging the idea that someone who says something open to interpretation should clarify what they mean. That's a basic fact of life.
Yep, he did what was necessary. Instead of the "I'm sorry you feel that way, I didn't mean it" it was "I'm sorry that I made you feel that way even if it wasn't intentional".
Why he did it is illustrated perfectly by the most basic communication model.
Spoiler!

This is the thing about communication that had always frustrated me. "Why am I responsible for your interpretation of what I'm saying?" "I said the sky is blue, it's your problem if you thought that meant it's green."
Over time, I've come to realize that it's because I'm the one with the message, and communication is the responsibility of the communicator. If I'm telling you the sky is blue, and you walk away thinking it's green, then I've failed to communicate my message to you.
Having said that, if I'm with my buddies and I crack a joke about a shirtless guy testing positive for alcohol, using slang that my buddies understand, and someone else overhears part of it and gets offended... well, I wasn't communicating with that person, so I don't really need to feel responsible for how they interperet it. I do have to decide wether or not I care that they're offended, though, and then act accordingly.
Keep in mind, all of this goes out with window when I'm cracking a joke with my buddies as part of a nationally broadcast show -- where the viewers are the real audience, not my buddies.

Agreed. Not because of this, but because he was behind "not a question of if, but how many". Absolute monster.
I thought that one was provided by one of the other hacks like McGuire or Healy. Ron's contribution was the "gimme a glass of wine or beer, I think they win a cup in two years, not more than four". both are equally punishable by permanent unemployment.
He comes off as extremely arrogant and unlikeable. His public persona is one of loving hockey and doing what he does for that love of the game, but the book makes it clear that numerous times Ron looked out for Ron.
Which we all do I suppose.
But it he just came off very smug and self entitled.
It’s funny how even in carefully curated autobiographies, highly successful people come across as self-centered ######bags. To get to the top of any highly competitive field you need a certain mindset, of talent supercharged by ego and ambition, that usually makes for an unpleasant personality. Which is why I’ve stopped reading biographies of contemporary people - I honestly don’t want to know what they’re really like.

Mclean did it right. If people were willing to just clarify #### they say when they are not trying to be ignorant, rather than doubling down, no one would get "cancelled" (stupid and truly non-existant thing) and the ones that would be punished would be the ones who were purposefully being ignorant.

If you told me two nights ago I would be defending Ron I would have called you something much worse than what Ron said.
Seriously, this is ridiculous...wanting someone to lose their job over this? really? I hope you don't walk around naked in your glass houses. Ron is the last person the PC principals of the world should want fired he is all about inclusion.
Guy was on the air until 3AM and then on again the next day for 6 hours trying to make a joke on the spot. It came off wrong and he apologized.
the end
