I would echo Ben's comments. I don't think much of the comment, but it would be helpful if he clarified his intent. This is only because he is a public figure on a national broadcast.
As for the 'cancel culture' comments, I'm so sick of this line. Sometimes people deserve to face the consequences of their actions, and sometimes these types of events help to start a dialogue and push us to better understand and empathize with one another.
Dismissing concerns/reactions as 'cancel culture' is the opposite side of the same coin that they apparently hate. It only serves to absent-mindedly ridicule and shut down lines of communication.
But should a person be called out according to someone’s perception? The problem with cancel culture is that it’s a leap to a conclusion by shaming a person according to what a person feels. It’s very right to question the validity of the claim of the facts and give some context. Cancel culture just jumps to assumptions and that should be critiqued as it’s dumb.

A thread where most of the posts think this is nothing, a handful of posts think it could be something but that he shouldn't be fired, and anyone who actually thinks he should be fired are people who want him fired because he sucks, not because of this...
...and still a few edgelords come out acting like they have some hot take about "the woke mob" or "the culture" or "young people." Honestly, read the room. I know you think your take is on fire and you are standing guard at the gates of common sense, or whatever, but you'll notice most people are there with you, so it comes off a bit silly and a bit tired. Get a personality.
And please, make fun of cancel culture all you want. But if you have to make fun of people using preferred pronouns or mocking the way people identify, you're a bigot. Plain and simple. You can do one without doing the other.
Hahahahahaha. Not quite a full blown drama queen, but princess, your tiara is a little askew.

Honest questions: what were you laughing at? The joke, or the awkward fail?
Not sure if this is quoting properly (doesn't look like it).
I did laugh hard; it's a funny call out on a broadcast and I make tarps off jokes with my buddies on the golf course all the time.
I like humor.
^at Powder's comment: It being a "fail" didn't cross my mind. I'm not searching for sensitive crap around every corner. Sometimes it's just nice to tone the seriousness down, especially during a hockey game, and laugh at a quick joke.
Ron is human, he was raised the way he was and has the capacity to have natural jokes and natural "out of date" jokes slip through. The stretch to this going to an HIV + joke is pretty far. Does anyone here really think that's where his mind's at???

Who has literally been cancelled though? Don Cherry has a popular podcast. Ghomeshi maybe can't work again in media.
They lost their jobs though. Both, probably deserved given their track records. But say in this case CBC gets the heave because of lgbtq pressure. Does is track record deserve it based on the facts? I’d argue wholeheartedly no. But there is a witch-hunt already in place based on the AP articles out there.
This has a longer video...both Hrudey and Amber take the piss out of Ron with 'positive' puns of their own.
After Hrudey's take it's kinda interesting to watch MacLean and Botterill, and then Friedman and Stewart's facial expressions...it's impossible to say for sure, but I got the sense that everyone's spidey senses were tingling that something awkward had happened (including MacLean).

Further question - sounds like you got the context of it being a lighthearted 'you're gay' rib?
My read on this is that Bieksa is legitimately funny/entertaining and Ron is trying to keep up like Michael Scott, when he should really just stay in his lane
Phyllis even gives a Botterill look.

Again, develop a personality. This isn't as clever as you think it is in your head. You're a grown adult with arrested development calling another grown adult "princess."
Not all of us wish to rehash the level of interactions we had when we were 16.

Yes to all of this. Even Bieksa knew it was offside.
And I think Ron has seen Bieksa, Stewart, Friedman and Hrudey all take lighthearted shots at each other and decided to be one of the guys.
"You're positive for something" implies fill in the blank with any appropriate adjective under the sun, slow, fat, stupid, gay, immature - continue ad nauseum.
What people choose to infer as the adjective is on them, not on Ron.
Except that “something” has to do with pictures of half naked dudes.
palumbo said he's known maclean for a long time and believes he's sincere in wanting to be better with his language on air.
"i take him at his word. I've always known ron to be a staunch ally when it comes to his historic support of the lgbtq+ community. It was a good conversation," palumbo said. "to his credit he reached out and took full ownership of what he said and that interaction. He provided some extra context to the comment and what was behind the comment.
"we then discussed the concept of language outside of two-way communication and between two parties and how that can be interpreted outside of the parties."

There's so many things that deserve apologies more than what Ron said (where most people, including myself, likely misinterpreted it). Just made something outta nothing.
No reason for him to have to make this statement but hopefully people are happy now.

I'm not happy. I totally understand the entire thing.
I still want Ron Maclean to ride off into the sunset and to never be heard from again.
Not because of this nothingburger mind you. Just in general.

I didn't think it was a big deal and, knowing plenty of worse people, have trouble getting upset when someone who shows themselves to be supportive says the wrong thing or something that can be taken the wrong way.
But you just pointed out the reason he had to make the statement. Most people misinterpreted it, so he clarified what he meant. This seems like a good resolution, I don't know why we're now begrudging the idea that someone who says something open to interpretation should clarify what they mean. That's a basic fact of life.
