I don't think he chose his language at all, and that is the problem—he spoke without thinking.
I certainly don't think k he should lose his job as a result of this, but I also think this is not something that should be merely brushed aside without consequence. I honestly don't know how this should be handled.

Really? This was the first place my own mind went to when hearing it. Maybe the interpretation says something about my age?

So when someone speaks without thinking, an action must be taken, just need time to think of what that is?

So you admit that he didn't mean anything by it, but should still be punished for it?

I didn't get very far into his book at all. It seems an unfair criticism but it was written in the same manner with which he speaks and it just annoyed me to read it.

What's that? You don't know what a zweedledab is? Shame on you. You'll find out next year, when it becomes the Woke Flavour of the Month and you can lose your career for being insufficiently supportive. Remember, ‘silence is violence’, and so is saying the wrong thing.

A thread where most of the posts think this is nothing, a handful of posts think it could be something but that he shouldn't be fired, and anyone who actually thinks he should be fired are people who want him fired because he sucks, not because of this...
...and still a few edgelords come out acting like they have some hot take about "the woke mob" or "the culture" or "young people." Honestly, read the room. I know you think your take is on fire and you are standing guard at the gates of common sense, or whatever, but you'll notice most people are there with you, so it comes off a bit silly and a bit tired. Get a personality.
And please, make fun of cancel culture all you want. But if you have to make fun of people using preferred pronouns or mocking the way people identify, you're a bigot. Plain and simple. You can do one without doing the other.

Being in the public eye for your entire career makes it almost impossible to not have slip ups.
Ron has his faults, no question. But he has been a consummate professional for decades, and that body of work speaks far louder than a dad joke/banter that fell flat at the wrong time.
There is nothing intentional here to be upset about. Society needs to stop being so sensitive. No one is perfect.

Probably all he needs to do is say he chose a word that can be construed in a hurtful way that he did not intend, and reaffirm his support for LGBTQ matters.

I very much doubt it. I'm referring to one post in multiple pages of reasonable posts. I think people can handle it.

"You're positive for something" implies fill in the blank with any appropriate adjective under the sun, slow, fat, stupid, gay, immature - continue ad nauseum.
What people choose to infer as the adjective is on them, not on Ron.

This is the type of joke you'd expect from South Park or Family Guy.
South Park basically had an entire episode based on the premise.
The problem is, the audience for those shows is completely different from the audience for a hockey broadcast. You'd expect that from South Park, but not MacLean.
A stupid and offensive mistake. Probably not worth being fired over though, based on his track record.
I do think he should be fired, but only because he sucks and is an Oilers homer.
Slightly off topic, but I also question the humbleness of anyone who writes an autobiography about themselves. Unless it's someone like Michael Jordon or Obama. Or someone who has overcome extreme hardships.

So, a statement has to be offensive to everyone, before it can be offensive?

I’m offended by how boring hometown hockey is
This would be justice for Strombo. Bring him back, also Amber has outperformed Maclean since the start anyways

I would echo Ben's comments. I don't think much of the comment, but it would be helpful if he clarified his intent. This is only because he is a public figure on a national broadcast.
As for the 'cancel culture' comments, I'm so sick of this line. Sometimes people deserve to face the consequences of their actions, and sometimes these types of events help to start a dialogue and push us to better understand and empathize with one another.
Dismissing concerns/reactions as 'cancel culture' is the opposite side of the same coin that they apparently hate. It only serves to absent-mindedly ridicule and shut down lines of communication.

Honestly unsure what the point you are trying to make here is.
People will always hear what they want to hear, a statement will often be taken as the speaker was suggesting x because that's what I have decided he meant.
The interpretation may be completely separate and distinct from the message being sent as people will always hear selectively to suit their own narrative.

You laughed “hard”? At that? This might be the biggest reach in the thread.
