Anyway they were debating the actual hockey angle, not taking things personally.

Not sure, Monahan has had ~5 fairly major surgeries.
Sure he is young, however will he rebound?
Can he stay healthy?
I heard the media speculate about Monahan awhile ago where the Flames have tried to trade the player (last off season)… However their is not a great return value at this time
Cap has big time value,

And thats what he does....takes everything to the extreme and rarely will he walk it back even when he getting slapped in the face with contrary evidence.
Its actually embarrassing for him at times.

It's really uncomfortable to listen to. It often feels like Steinberg's walking on eggshells with trying to not set Nault off. I've honestly stopped listening to the afternoon shows because of Nault, which is unfortunate.

Yep totally agreed, something about the afternoon show is just uncomfortable in that area, and frankly feels fairly amateur and unpolished. The morning show - even when they bicker - just feels more polished and legit. Agreed you can tell they like each other.
And I must be a smarmy prick myself haha, because Pinder never gets on my nerves like he does to others (I missed the discussion today however)...which is weird, because I absolutely can't stand that U.S. style yelling over each other with aggressive hot takes sports talk thing too. Cowherd, Stephen A. Smith, etc...hate those guys.

It was nothing like those guys who are so utterly full of themselves and their style. Skip Bayless is another one. It was a little heated and voices were raised, and Pinder was definitely out on a ledge, but it wasn't an ego driven WWE style promo.

Thanks, yeah thats what I was picturing. And agree about the U.S. full of themselves bit. I think it goes beyond that too, I think shows down there genuinely encourage that sort of buffoonery, because they think it gets clicks.
I used to listen to the Jay & Dan Podcast regularly when they were down in L.A. doing Fox Sports. They had former NFL QB turned TV personality Brady Quinn on the pod one time, who seems like an awesome, laid back dude. He was talking about how different the shows are on the East coast, and how producers were encouraging it.
Quinn said during break, a producer told him what side to take on the issue (to ensure polarization), then said "Bury this guy!!! BURY HIM!!!!!" Jay & Dan were dying laughing about it, but it was very telling. I don't get how anybody could like that nonsense

That fact that Nault survived the last round of layoffs pretty well confirms this is the kind of stuff Kirsch is looking for on the broadcasts. He probably loved this morning's show. To be fair it has elicited discussions here so you can understand the reasoning. The hot take sports talk may be annoying but it does generate clicks and attention.

Take a listen to Rintoul and and Surman. Just a brutal show where both hosts go over the same points agreeing on everything with vanilla takes and analysis. Nault at least keeps it interesting from time to time.

Differing opinions make for great discussions and spontaneous arguments are totally fine. I just hate when it's contrived where one host starts saying contrarian things just because the program director wants him/her to spice things up.

I'm all for differing opinions, that's why I think Pinder and Boomer are the Fan's top 2 on air talents. They're both able to affect the rest of the crew into giving theirs, but at the same time not be confrontational. I thought Pinder was really good at making Steinberg less vanilla, and having him voice his opinions more. When Steinberg was with Kerr, it just felt like both guys agreed with everything, and that made for boring radio talk. It was a big loss to the afternoon show when they moved Pinder back to the morning.
It definitely is a talent to be able to be a devil's advocate and have unpopular opinions, yet not be unlikeable when presenting it. And I think that's where guys like Boomer and Pinder excel at, and where Nault isn't able to do. I guess if you like the in your face "I'm right, you're wrong, so suck it" style, then maybe Nault's more up your alley, but I've never been a fan of that type of personality.

Yeah, I really like Steinberg, and Boomer as well (and of course Rhett, but he couldn't carry a show on his own. He's just great at his niche). But Pinder must be my favourite personality there, because whatever show they have him on seems to be the most enjoyable one for me.
Pinder & Steinberg were great together. But I do like how 960 got the old band back together on mornings again. It was a shell of itself without him & Rhett.

I think a lot of it has to do with implied credibility.
I'll take Bob Mckenzie as gospel because he's been around forever, he's very connected and he has the self awareness to know that he's not really an expert on hockey itself, so he's measured when talking about that.
Now, obviously we're not getting Mckenzie on 960, but I think the responsibility lies with the radio personality to frame their persona on what their expertise and credibility is.
Pat Steinberg has been around for awhile and he's done some legwork on his advanced stats writing etc. I find he's a bit too measured but if he gives an opinion it's usually backed up by either his credibility, his connections or whatever else.
Boomer is fluff, but he's pretty affable and not overly opinionated fluff. Plus he understands his role and I find him good on the radio. I find Warrener terrible on the radio, but as a guy who played, and with connections within the organization I find he has a ton of credibility with hockey takes.
Pinder, I'm not too sure about. He's been around for awhile and I find him to be a decent radio professional, but I'm not sure where his actual hockey credibility lies. If anything he knows what he is and plays the role of "Just asking questions" and "Just creating conversation"
Klein I thought was good at driving conversation and adding to roundtable conversation with decent points added. Vanilla, but didn't overplay his role.
Nault I think is trying too hard to create a persona for himself. Trying to maybe go the Pinder route. His opinions are a bit too extreme and angry for a guy who for the most part has no more hockey knowledge than any regular fan. But he presents himself as a guy who should be listened to.
I get it, radio is hard. There's a lot of airtime to fill. Plus with covid, I'm guessing access has been limited. But I don't really care to hear an opinion unless you carry some implied credibility, or you can back it up with some legwork you've done.
In my own completely ignorant position of not knowing what goes on behind the scenes. Everything just seems lazy. If its not lazy it's amateur .

At the end of the day its entertainment, or in this case, coverage of a game that can be classified as entertainment, on a station that is clearly constrained in its budget these days paying guys that are likely overworked and underpaid with as you say limited access to their connections.
So can we really even get that nitpicky to begin with? Maybe not. But we can have our preferences as to personalities. Leaning toward amateur is what 960 can afford us these days. So you have to take what you can get as far as sports talk.

If anyone caught The 9 with Pinder this morning, you were witness to the slaughter of Eric Francis. It was so well deserved with the crap that he spews, Pinder called him out on everything he's been saying about Johnny and Francis had nothing...so satisfying to listen to.

It was pretty glorious. He even called out Eric Francis for moving the goal posts. +1 respect points for Pinder. Anyone who calls out Francis for his stupidity from time to time deserves a shout out.

It’s the Smack off today.
I can actually take or leave the smack off and Rome’s idiot callers, but I’ve been listening to the show via podcast the last week and I miss this guy on the airwaves.
All due respect to Rintoul and Karen, but they ain’t no Hall of Famer.
