I have been shifting to the keep Gaudreau trade Tkachuk bandwagon especially if the Flames can get Eichel.
How can this current team compete for a cup? They need to add elite players specifically down the middle. I know it means very little but Sabres fans on Twitter are really starting to like the Flames as a trade partner when they hear Tkachuk is on the table. I also get the vibe it won’t be a ton of +++ in addition to Matthew to get Jack. Flames 12-13th overall pick and maybe a surplus second from 2022?
I do think the Flames will heavily pursue Eichel and or Reinhart as a future core piece for the team
All things being equal, I would pick Tkachuk over Gaudreau if there had to be a choice. But if the rumours are true that Gaudreau is open to signing a long term extension, that seals the deal for me. Tkachuk set himself up for early UFA status and has a really high RFA qualification. That strongly suggests he doesn't see Calgary in his long term future.
I am still not convinced that Eichel is a solution though. He is coming off a serious injury and is a has a massive contract. Mortgaging the future to get him when the team has holes as every position would be a potential disaster. Adding Eichel and assuming Gaudreau re-signs, would eat up a lot of salary making it impossible to improve other parts of the roster. It might make the team good enough just to teeter on mediocrity and avoid a rebuild, but I don't see it as building a contender.

The "core" at forward that has to be "shaken up" includes Guadreau, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund and Monahan.
Backlund has a full blown NTC.
Monahan has a ten team no trade ( what do you want to bet Buffalo and Columbus are on it?)
Lindholm, Guadreau and Tkachuk are tradable.
IMHO Lindholm isn't going anywhere especially with that value contract.
Gaudreau whens hes in his groove is the only straw that stirs the drink we've got.
Tkachuk is physical and creates opportunities and capitalizes on chances however he isn't as much of a "driver".
Both are "big recognizable names" to the rest of the NHL and either would create excitement in new cities.
Gaudreau is a 27 year old UFA after next season
Tkachuck is a 23 year old RFA and while expensive a team would have control for 2 years and a chance to sign him.

FWIW Buffalo is NOT in a good cap place when its added up and clearly want a trade that helps with cap. They are exposing to expansion 29 year old Eakins and 28 year old Millar both with 3 mill +- deals. (33 year old Okposo wiaved like Lucic did too but little chance hes taken) They stuck with the worst contract in the NHL in Skinner and need to give Rienhardt and Dahlin raises as well as a modest raise for middlestadt.
They also know they have to take some money back on Eichel. They are in no position to take back picks and prospects alone and most NHL teams also have RFA mouths to feed you don't see untill you dive deep into their caps. Flames should have a modest extra 3.5 +- to throw in and yet still ice a roster with 1-1.5 left.
The medai had NYR, LA and apparantly Calgary as "in on Eichel".
IMHO Why trade a straw like Johnny for another straw like Eichel when having 2 play drivers should add to the attack? Give up the younger and still valuable Tkachuk IF and only IF the prize is Eichel.

Dump-ins seem to be a Sutter direction. They started doing it so much more after the coaching change.

Fire Treliving. Bring in an entire new management team with the intention of a real rebuild. I have zero faith that any moves these guys will make will result in anything but more of the same. A re-rool is a waste of time and assets.
Gaudreau and Tkachuk are good players but they are not elite. Both should be traded. If you hand out massive contracts to both you're doomed. These guys would look great on a team where they are secondary options but as your top options you won't be able to compete with the elite teams in the league.
Give Dube third line Center role and demand more maturity and responsibility out of his game, pairing him back with Lucic whom he helped rejuvenate his career and who is now captain is a big step for his development
Give Mangiapane top 6 minutes and full time PP and PK duties, he’s a stud and reminds me of a winger Brayden Point.
Promote Phillips, Pelletier and Ruzicka to full time roster
When was the last time a team traded 2 of their top guys like Eichel and Reinhart in a single swap? I would have guessed a GM thinks he can get more value in 2 trades.
Something like that is what I see and hope for as well. I think the idea that you can trade out a pile of guys and get a pile of superstars back is goofy, and I think if the Flames can land a legit superstar of any kind, it will be a win.
Answering the question of the OP, it's not easy to see a road for the Flames here - the pieces you might want to get rid of (Gio, Monahah, Gaudreau maybe...Tkachuk maybe) if you get rid of them, it leaves big holes. The issue is that the team HAS big holes to fill already, so if you start swapping pieces, all you do is change what hole there is.
If you could get a legit 1c and put Lindholm as 1RW, that helps a LOT. Monahan has to play 2c at this point for the team to go anywhere, he just isn't good enough against the league's best centers, because he's not mean enough, and he's not fast enough. It is what it is.
So I see all kinds of paths available, and what it will come down to is what peices/offers come in from other teams. The difficulty is that I think those offers are going to be mediocre, and I expect a mediocre product next year too, I just don't see a quick turnaround here, because so many pieces are just not quite good enough either for actual skill or just for slotting.
If the Flames lose Gio, I wonder if Sutter's history with Alec Martinez gives the Flames a leg up on signing him?
Also, I wonder what kind of contract 33 year old Martinez will be looking for and if the Flames should even pursue that. Probably not.
I hope so, Sutter would rely on him a lot. I think Mackey, who plays a similar style, would learn a lot from him. Since he's turning 34 this year, I think something similar to the Tanev contract, but with less term is reasonable.
Martinez/Tanev/Hanifin/Andersson/Mackey/Kylington/Stone would be like taking the NYI approach. No clear #1D, but just have three solid pairings playing under an elite defensive coach and hope that the result is greater than the sum of their parts. In that scenario, it'd also be nice to add a big, experienced, physical left-shot D for league minimum who would accept being the #8 guy. Basically a left-side version of Stone that Sutter can make look semi-competent. Phaneuf hasn't officially announced his retirement has he ?

I believe Coleman can play all three positions. Hyman would be my #1 choice over Coleman for free agent forwards, but I think he will get at least 4.5m+ AAV. It'd also be nice to move Lucic or Backlund, I don't know what deals would make sense for them though.

Not the wildest number of changes, but some significant ones. Gio out, Calgary outbids Boston for Hall, give Hyman an extra year and get him. Rely on a young defensive group with 0 overpaid veterans being brought in, and give Kylington PP minutes. Find a high value back-up for Markstrom as Wolf starts his pro career in Stockton while relying on the youth from Stockton to come up and play depth roles throughout the lineup. Backlund moves up the line-up when injuries strike Monahan.
Treliving pushes the future chips in hoping he’ll finally build a team worth worrying about maintaining. Ruzicka, Pelletier, Zary, Heineman and Pospisil all “on the brink” of coming up from the AHL.
