How would you trade a Monahan or a Backlund for example for someone that is going to make your team better right now? How is keeping either of those players going to make your team better next year if your goal is to be more competitive?
The team isn't good. Being afraid to make changes because your worried about the team being less good next year is a good way to be less good next year.

I've said this already but GMs look at players differently than fans. They see things that fans don't because fans get too emotional when a player isn't living up to their standards and focus just on the negatives. There very well could be a GM out there interested in either that would offer a player that Treliving feels would make the team better.
You can't just be trading players for anything just to make change though.

The Flames are back in the all to familiar place of not being good enough to make the playoffs but too good to get a draft pick to measurably make their team better. That's the worse possible place to be. Making any changes whether the team got better or worse would be preferable to being where they seem to always be.

They'd probably play terrible, uninspired hockey and miss the playoffs.

Have people honestly forgotten how Darryl Sutter operates? He’s as old school as they come. Playing through injuries is admirable, and when it comes to deciding who plays the only thing that matters is winning the next game. Markstrom had a concussion earlier in the season and he ended up playing 27 of the Flames last 34 games.

Maybe such is the perception you have growing up around the NHL. Maybe you really do think you just belong there and should play by right.
Genuinely am speculating, I don't know cause that would be an unusual and special kind of upbringing for sure, so maybe it comes with some out of left field beliefs as a player.
I do get the sense that parents pushing for special treatment of their kids by coaches is just commonplace these days.

I think a lot of the quotes from today have either been taken out of context or been sensationalized by over emotional fans that are disappointed because their expectations were not even closely met. I think we all, including players, management and fans had much higher expectations for this team at the beginning of the season and it makes this seasons failures all the more bitter.
Tkachuk sounds frustrated and I get how some of his comments sound entitled but taken into context with all of his answers he just sounds frustrated at losing and wants to improve or help more next season:
Here are a few of his quotes "had a couple tough stretches, whether it was a month there or a few weeks where I couldn't do anything out there...wasn't producing, wasn't playing much...just kinda everything...but we'll be able to figure out why that was over this next little bit and come back and get ready to play the best I've ever played next year...that's all you can do."
excerpt from another quote "and I want to get back to the way I was because I know I can help this team."
and one last quote "I wish I could have played better and those situations could have happened earlier when the games meant more...but that's on me to play better and force myself into those situations".
I don't see entitlement from the whole context. He wants to win and he wants to be impactful. Isn't that what you want?
Similarly the posts saying Lindholm is entitled or getting upset because he said "We thought it was gonna be easier than it was." is making mountains out of nothing. All he said (in my opinion ) was they didn't come close to making their expectations.

I have been getting a Phaneuf vibe from Tkachuk lately and I don't like it.

The worst possible place to be is constantly missing the playoffs with no signs of improvement. Some people on here want to think they're now on their way to doing that but it's highly unlikely and they'll be back in the playoffs next year. They had a bad year. They aren't the only team who missed when they shouldn't have.
And no, just making the playoffs shouldn't be good enough.

It will be harder to make the playoffs in the division they will be in next year but they will be a playoff team next year because...
Some people think that they are on the verge of constantly missing the playoffs with no chance of improvement because that's pretty much what they have been doing for how long? Once every couple years they make the playoffs and prove that they don't belong there now...

Should be easier to make the playoffs next year...
Vegas will make it
Oilers, probably...depends on their goaltending
then.....
Calgary with a full year of Sutter will probably make the playoffs, especially with some upgrades

It's not like the Pacific Division is a juggernaut.

Up until this year they had made the playoffs back to back. They happened to miss this year but this wasn't your normal season. And even with the bad start they could have very well still made it had it been a full season. If they have another bad season next year I'll start to get concerned but I highly doubt there will be a repeat of this season.

.527 points percentage made the playoffs in the north division this year, lowest in the league. Do you think .527 makes the playoffs in the Flames division next year?

Concerned about constantly missing the playoffs.
I have my concerns about the team but it has to do with being more than just a team that makes the playoffs and then blows it.

I don't understand why we're arguing here That's the same point I'm trying to get across, when the best case scenario is a team making the playoffs and getting pounded, there's no excuse in my mind for being afraid to make changes because you might not make your team better. Your team is not good now, there's no value in hanging on to that.

You might want to look at the point percentages of the teams in the Pacific division this season
Hint: Calgary was 3rd
obviously improve the team as much as you can...it won't be harder to make the playoffs because of the division though

This will be extremely unpopular but...
I think the best road forward is to keep as much of this group as possible.
I was one of if not the pre-eminent “blow it up” crowd earlier. In fact 2 years ago I was clamouring to blow it up. I think this team has what it takes. I really wanted to blow them up but from what I saw from Sutter onward? Yeah. We can win the Cup with this group. Yep- roast away. But I believe. Coaching change was too little too late. Fans in the building? This team can do it. Biggest major hurdle is to expect Giordano to go via Expansion Draft and that’s a massive hole to fill.
But this team? Yep, I think they have it. I know that sounds insane. You know there’s something to be said about having something to prove. Markstrom is a Stanley Cup caliber goalie. Defence admittedly needs to be addressed and more depth especially when Gio gets taken, but you got some good young forwards Johnny stepping up and I think Tkachuk returns to form with a crowd in the building. Lindholm is amazing and, yeah. I think they have it. I know this is unpopular- but one of the reasons the 2004 team did what they did was because the city believed they could and the team could feel it as well. If this city backs this group? It can work- the players are good enough.

I am still of the opinion that chucky has been brought up to leave it all on the ice for his team, to go to war for them, which he tried to do, before being told to tone it down, which went against everything he had been taught, which stung. The team should stand up for each other, chucky felt he did his part but the team didn't have his back, subsequently his play suffered.
I think that the problem lies in the leadership of this team, especially Gio. I know this won't be a popular sentiment but I think that's where we need a change. I would not be bothered if he was taken by the kraken.

We can keep em all together. As a package in a trade.

Yup. Don’t understand all the “Gio is such an amazing captain and leader” verbage. The biggest flaw on this team is a lack of resilience and leadership so how does the finger not get pointed at the captain? The lack of resilience year after year and the lack of results….why does Gio not get any heat? Because he’s a nice guy, has been with the team for so long, won a Norris, does amazing in the community? I just think a lot of people like to bring up leadership issues with the team but the captain conveniently gets left out. What if it was Gio that told Tkachuk to tone it down? Never know. I think at 38 years old, it’s time to part ways with Gio and thank him for being such a great player for the organization. Also - we shouldn’t name a captain until we see where this team is headed and who steps up. Also - I think Backlund is a big problem with the country club culture too. He’s got to go. I believe he’s the second longest tenured Flames player on the roster after Gio and wears the ‘A’. I believe that’s the place to start. If these guys were such great leaders then no one would question the leadership in the room. It makes no sense. Treliving et all are blowing smoke.
