You do realize that posters are allowed to have their own opinions right? Nothing is official either way at this point as even if he's willing to stay his contract demands may be too rich for the team.

I tend to agree that the devil is in the contract terms. Is Johnny asking for greater than market value to stay? The problem is that the normal negotiation time would come after his LNTC kicks in. There has to be agreement at least on the broad terms before then.
I didn't hear his exact words, but I would have been shocked if he didn't indicate he wanted to stay at this point. It's not a dumb question to ask since everyone wants to know, but there's no answer I'd really have confidence in. It's better than "well, a lot can happen" or something like that.

Saying Johnny will ask for 10x8 too stay is not an opinion, its ridiculous.

Agreed, which is why I think he's the most likely trade candidate. That and his crazy qualifying offer coming up that he won't be able to live up to.
As I said in the other thread, if you can get a legit #1 center to play with Johnny, you move Tkachuk to do so. Lindholm is a great #2 who can be a #1 when needed. Not sure where Monahan fits into the plans going forward.

So I guess this means that despite him unequivocally saying that he intends to stay long term, a good chunk of the board is going to act as though the opposite is more likely.

Valimaki (Mackey) - Andersson (Tanev)

Doesn't leave much room for doubt, really.

thats great and all..it really is.
But actions speak louder than words and unless an extension is signed before the draft, then he can say all that stuff and mean it....but it doesnt matter.
They would still have to deal him or then limit themselves to 5 teams they can talk to or lose him for nothing at all next year.
Its just the position he/they are in with each other.

But…..he’s right. It’s neat that Johnny wants to stay, but if his contract demands don’t make sense there’s not much the team can do. It’s not just on management if he stays……he has to make it happen too.

I don't think he can sign before free agency, which means he can't officially sign prior to his NTC kicking in.
So they would have to come to an agreement prior to free agency, and then make it official once the time hits.

I completely understand why you might have gotten that vibe. For me though, I felt like it has nothing to do with being here, as in, in Calgary, with Sutter as the coach (not saying this is what you're saying), but more to do with Tkachuk wanting the minutes and wanting to play in all situations and being upset that he wasn't anymore when Sutter first came on. He did mention this changed later, but the main message I got out of it was that he wants to be this team's guy. Badly.

Can you remember the last time a teammate came to Tkachuk's defense on the ice? Lindholm trying to hold Kassian back is about the only time I can remember.
I wonder if there is some tension between him and Lucic. If Lucic was the one who told Tkachuk to tone things down because I can't really see anyone else having the presence to be able to do that. Other teams had been trying it for 4 years and couldn't.
It would be odd if it was Lucic seeing as how he saw first hand how effective Marchand was in that role but I just can't explain the sudden change in Tkachuk's game after that Muzzin incident.
Other pests in the league, such as Wilson and Marchand get all kinds of support from their teammates and those two probably cross the line way more than Tkachuk has.
I just get the sense that this group is just naturally timid and don't like having a guy like Tkachuk around to "rock the boat", however, this is exactly what this team needs, in Treliving's own words "someone to drag this team into the battle".

Mackey seems pretty tough, though he's under 200 lbs so that can only go so far. Tanev plays great D. Andersson is a facewasher. Stone is big and tough, assuming he stays. So there's no real scary guy but I'm not sure soft is correct. Funny that the biggest D may just be the tamest (Hanifin). Juuso is so young I think he needs to be seasoned to be aggressive.
Offensively, I think Hanifin could contribute more - he's a terrific skater, though I don't know if he has the shot to be a huge threat. Kylington needs to be given some more rope. He's got lots of offensive skill and he's not afraid to use it. Let him take some chances. I think Valimaki is a really good passer. Not sure if his wheels are there though.

Tkachuk was definitely the most unhappy sounding player. I mean all of them are disappointed that they didn't make the playoffs, but he's the only one who seems to feel that he was negatively impacted by Sutter. I was surprised by how much he talked about his reduced icetime as I didn't notice it that much.

He's right, though.
Gaudreau has produced at roughly a PPG over his previous contract and and at his age has to be expecting double digit AAV and max term.
In a league where it was seven years ago when Kane and Toews signed extensions for 10.5x8y against a notably smaller cap ceiling, we really have no idea where these contract talks go. There's a lot of uncertainty on what a franchise player UFA deal looks like in the post-covid era.
Unfortunately, the reality was always that signing Gaudreau to "only" six years would come back to bite us in the ass. You're not going to nickel and dime a UFA.
