That’s a trade that is not happening.

I believe Gaudreau is leaving. I just don't see why he would stay. Because of that I think you have to maximize his return. To get him to stay you likely have to overpay which is a horrible idea. He's the Flames best player but he's not an elite player in the league and you can't pay him like one.

Over the last two years, he has averaged more points per game than Johnny.

Early in his career he was playing a defensive role as an 18 year old third line shut down centre.

In any event, these days, he’s still a shut down centre with defensive responsibilities who is out scoring Johnny.

I still love what Johnny brings, but he can't be a difference maker in the playoffs, so what's the point.

I'll be sad if Johnny's traded but understand if he isn't likely to re sign.
Best Flame since Iggy, people will know the loss once he's gone.

It’s true, even Tkachuk and Lindholm looked lost without Gaudreau. Those 2 were together virtually all season long and Lindholm had 9 goals in 40 games and Tkachuk lost his mojo and had fans were left questioning his future here for the first time.

Stick that duo with Gaudreau and Lindholm scores 10 in 16 and Tkachuk finishes the season with a 5 game goal scoring streak. Gaudreau stirs the drink on this team and without him, they’ll be the same team that couldn’t score back in March and lost 8 of 9.

I hope he stays. I think with the right changes to the roster and a full season with him under Sutter, he can still be a difference maker for this team. When he's on his game he's still one of the most exciting and dynamic players in the league, and guys with that kind of skill don't come around often. And I like what I've seen so far from the Chucky/Lindholm/Johnny line.

When Gaudreau was playing poorly, many here said that it would be stupid to trade him while his value is low. Now the sentiment seems to be it would unwise to trade him anymore because he’s playing well.

So if it’s dumb to trade a star player when he’s playing poorly, and dumb to trade a star player when he’s playing well, then when is a good time to trade a star player?

Ya this one isnt as simple as just sign or trade. If you can sign him reasonable and asap, you do. Otherwise, tradeskees.

To some extent, yes. But I cherry picked the most relevant stats, the recent ones.

But the last two seasons are more important, when facts support Johnny’s point totals have been decreasing while Couturier’s have risen over time ( due to different usage).

Going into next season, there is no reason to expect that Johnny’s point total will likely exceed Couturier, and it’s clear that his overall game is no where close to Couturier.

When you can’t resign him.

I picked trade him because I don't think he's going to re-sign. Ideally he would sign a 2 year extension in hopes of cashing in when the economics get back to normal but I just get the feeling he's ready to go back east.

If Gaudreau is bound to go back east just because he's from the east. Than Calgary is going to get Taylor Hall this year AND Brayden Point next season!

Come home boys!

Personally I think he should be re-signed if possible. The offence has been a black hole overall this season and losing Johnny makes it infinitely worse. When he's on, he's a gamebreaker and those are few and far in between in this league.

However...the discussion needs to be had what his intentions are. If he signs this summer a team-friendly deal, than that's ideal. If he wants to wait until after the season, he's for sure headed to UFA and 100% he needs to be traded.

It all comes down to that discussion and what he intends to do. Once that happens, the team will know what to do. I personally don't think he should be traded just to shake up the core. There's other core players way ahead of him if a shakeup is needed. He's found a way to fit into Sutter's system. I think he is one of the few who genuinely gives a #### about winning, he clearly hates to lose, and I don't think he's part of the rot on the team (unless Sutter says so). But if he wants to wait to re-sign after next season, he 100% needs to be traded.

Also kind of unbelievable we're already having this conversation. Felt like yesterday Gaudreauvertime was pumping his tires for a fat contract. Johnny signing that 6 year deal, felt like it would last forever. Sad to think it's nearing the end.
