I dont know how much help a Farmer is going to be for a hockey team.
Are there any more Sutters to draft?

Chicken and egg. The players are the problem because they weren't hiring good coaches. It's not just Ward, GG was not a good coach. Peters, was average but had some serious skeletons in his closet.
These players are not all bad. Before they came to Calgary, some of them were real winners. Gaudreau won everything before he turned pro. Same with Tkachuk. Both guys were clutch and big game performers in junior.
What happened? Development isn't all about letting the kids play, you need proper leadership to guide them otherwise they develop improperly, which is what has happened.

Fans can't hire or fire coaches, so if he really has an issue with the change he should be man enough to call out Flames management.

I thought so. A bunch of dead hookers is a bit much for 3 year olds.
I guess if they're going to grow up to be Flames getting them used to disappointment early is just prudent.

Mid-May, playoffs are under way, and the Flames win their last game of the season. It is like deja vu back to 32 years ago

The team has overall played much better hockey since Sutter came on board. They also subtracted Markstrom at his best, Bennett(trade), a healthy Monahan, a healthy Leivo (covid), and a healthy Hanifin. He also didn't have the benefit of a training camp to figure out lines/pairings and initially just picked up where ward left off.
Ward had a much better roster playing like ####.

Not sure Monahan has been healthy all year, but right. Plus, it takes time to turn a ship.
I do think Ward lacked a decent camp like a lot of new coaches get, and never really got his footing from the time he took over.
I agree the team looks better even though the record is about the same (until garbage time anyway).

I really like that the offseason is only 4 months this year.

Well, that's the season.
I think Ruzicka started looking better today. I wasn't impressed with his first game, but he was looking more effective today. Really needs to use his size more often, and I really want to see him attack the middle of the ice more. I think he passes well and skate well.
I felt so bad for Phillips bobbling the puck a bit on Backlund's pass. Should have been a tap-in. Probably full of nerves. I thought he got stronger as the game wore on. Looking forward to seeing him at next year's training camp.
Gaudreau continues to impress me. That's what - 15 or 16 games in a row where he is just creating and looking dangerous out there. I haven't seen this Gaudreau in a while. He looks confident out there. I wouldn't say he looks engaged, as it implies that he stopped being engaged for a while. I really believe his effort has always been really high, but I think the way the team was playing didn't allow for him to really attack on offence, as now he has more options as everyone is skating hard to attack too. At any rate, anyone still think that Sutter's system is all about dumping and chasing? Yeah, that's always option 2. Option one has always been to carry the puck in and retain possession.
I would bet if this same exact team returns next season, they make the playoffs. Ideal? No, because they are not a contender with this exact team. I am sure there will be moves, and I welcome it. I just think that this team has been playing better (including down the stretch before being eliminated - I don't count these 4 Vancouver games as important). I think they have been playing Sutter hockey the way that Sutter wants, for the most part.
Changes are coming, and it is going to be quite the off-season for this team. I have no idea who is or isn't getting traded. I just hope that when everything is said and done, the Flames will look better out on the ice and have more success over a full season. Hopefully this is one hell of an off-season for this club.

anyone know where we would be drafting based on the 'gold plan' (points gained after being eliminated from the playoffs)?
I would like this to determine if I support this strategy or not.

I think there's a good chance the Flames pick the same guy wether we win the lottery, drop to 14th, or trade our first to get two 2nds.

What a dufus.
Taken a page of out Loubo's book of coming to the defense of every canned or traded hockey staff or player because they were good people.
We get it, Geoff was a consummate professional that did his best in a #### situation with no camp. But ultimately the team sided with the fans because he was not getting the job done. We didn't hand him his papers.
Its part of the business when you spend to the cap and expectations are high.
Don't hose the fans for wanting the best for their team just cause you liked the guy.
Go give Mike Smith a manicure and gush over his season while you're at it.

My grandfather from my mothers side could have been a stunt double for Sutter. From the frown to the receding hairline. My mother always laughs when I tell her that.

Up until the last few games when they were out if the race the "played much better" narrative hasn't been backed up with amy kind of results...

It's not a narrative, it's a fact. The Flames are playing a much more dominant style:
5v5
Flames under Sutter
55.03% CF
90.80% SV%
Flames under Ward
50.62% CF
92.53% SV%
The difference in goaltending quality is the only reason you don't perceive those results.

When you've got corsi masters Nordstrom and Backlund driving those numbers and being some ( or the worst) of the least efficient offensive players in the entire league corsi can be a pretty misleading stat.
No doubt goaltending has been bad, but results are measured in wins and losses and nothing else.
It's great that the Flames are attacking 55% of the time but when that attack amounts to a toothless tiger its nothing to brag about.
Edit: goaltending has been poor, but a team that struggles to score more than 2 goals a game doesn't get to use that crutch.

Wonder how those sv% happened when both Markstrom and Rittich put up .904
Edit: Oh, 5v5. My bad
