C Red Savage, 5'11"181lbs (USDP): Son of Brian Savage. Here's a guy we would instantly love. Let me first say that I didn't do a U-18 write-up on him, as nobody on the US team really wowed me (except Pastujov)-could be my mistake. Savage was the Captain of that team, putting up only 1 goal in 5 games.
Savage is known for his elite two-way acumen, and has been called one of the best two-way guys in this draft. He plays for a rather porous U18 team that relies on heavily outscoring their opponents to win, but Savage has been said to be worth the other 5 guys on the ice when he's out there defensively. He breaks up plays with aplomb, and dominates the opponent in his end-and is often the key to the breakout up the ice, and the set-up in the O zone. 46gp/18g/24a/42pts, 39 PIMs-not the high totals of a Coronato, Pastujov, or Sillinger, but he's able to create opportunities on offence, and those numbers show that his offence is underrated.
Does everything required to win-blocks shots, wins battles all over the ice, is a workaholic, and has a non-stop motor. Killer on the PK. Models his game after Ryan O'Reilly. Great leader on and off the ice-often QB's the play in all zones. When he was out with a shoulder injury in 2020, he studied books about how to be a good leader, which says something about his character. He has also been called a puck-possession machine, and an aggressive attacker-high IQ, acute vision, and can make something out of nothing in tight spaces. Can beat defenders with his deft stickhandling. Attacks the greasy areas, and plays mean and physical-killer on the boards. Sounds a lot like Mike Peca. Great speed, with agility, edging and acceleration. I watched some of his interviews-kid is pretty articulate, humble, and likeable.
His game is still considered to be in development, so if he keeps working on his offence, he could be a top-6 C, but at worst, you're getting a solid, gritty C for your 3rd line to kill penalties and win faceoffs. Many think he's 3rd/4th round material, but I think he could easily sneak into the 2nd.

Just want to take a second to thank anyone who takes the time to read my little write-ups-it gives me a good outlet for all my pre-draft energy! I talk with my brothers about hockey (and draft), but I don't get to see them as much, so there's nobody to share with....

C/RW Josh Doan, 6'3"176lbs (Chicago, USHL): Passed over in last year's draft, but hear me out-last year he was on the fourth line for the Steel, putting up 14pts in 45 games, so no surprise that he wasn't drafted. Despite his low production, he was still noticed for his work ethic and willingness to do whatever it takes to contribute. This year, he exploded for 70 points in 53 games-good for 3rd overall in the USHL. Only 3 players scored more goals than his 31. The top-4 in that league was 4 members of the Steel (in order): Sean Farrell, Matt Coronato, Doan, and Erik Middendorf.
Doan's reputation is as a uber hard-working, 200ft player who's fearless in the dirty areas. Elite Prospects says his work rate is "something to behold", but there's more-he possesses high-end IQ, creativity, and feel for the play. He's a strong possession player who battles through defenders with his speed and stickhandling. He plays a fast-paced game, forechecks like a demon, is strong on the puck, and drives the net. Power forward like his Daddy.
Doan's defensive play is also talked about as a plus. He attacks opposing players with speed and aggressiveness, forcing them to give up the puck. Adept at breaking up rushes with his stick, or his body. His play away from the puck is praised, as well as his puck pursuit, which he does while never leaving any area uncovered defensively.
From watching his video, while he skates very well for a big guy-he could definitely improve some aspects, like his top speed, which looks a bit cumbersome. His technique seems good and smooth though. He's going to need time to bulk up as well.
Bob MacKenzie rates him at #80 for the draft.

Thanks! I totally forgot about that.
Wouldn’t it be 14th pick at worst though? If two teams with worse odds than the Flames win the lottery, they’d move down two? I still don’t get it. Or they could pick 1st or 2nd? Are they still doing the lottery for 3rd this year?

Everything else is mathematically impossible.
If Vancouver wins, they pick 10th. If they lose in any fashion, they pick 9th. I believe Ottawa has the tie breaker between them.

Presumably unless one or two teams below the Flames win the lottery, pushing everyone down.

The lottery is only for the top two picks from now on. Maximum number of spots you can move up is 10

Scott Morrow - 6'2" D is my second round hope for the Flames draft
Big, skates well, produces lots of offense, and has improved every year.
Down side is that he has not been able to play outside of Shattuck St. Mary's.

Props to Brian Savage for naming his kid Red. Red Savage is a killer name for a hockey player.

I did a write-up about him earlier, he’s one of my faves for the second round. He’s big and mean, and skates very well for a guy his size.

Okay, is this right? I'm too stupid to figure it out.
-The "can only move up 10 spots" rule doesn't apply until next year.
-They are only doing lotteries for the first two spots.
-Arizona is forfeiting their pick.
-Seattle has the same odds as the 3rd worst team in the lottery.
Therefore, the Flames will most likely pick 12th, but they could also pick 1st or 2nd if they win 1/2 lotteries, or they could pick 13th or 14th if teams 14th, 15th and/or 16th in the draft lottery odds wins the lottery(s)?

This is all correct (other than you being stupid, of course).
And with the season over, the Flames, barring lotteries, are picking 12th.

In that case, I want the Flames to trade down for more picks or draft Cole Sillinger (barring one of the top 8 falling), based on Sandman's posts.
