You know how to best address low ballers or other unreasonable buyers? Make them wait. Don't you just hate it when there is an item of interest, a great deal or a unique item you really want, you message the seller, but don't hear back? It's nauseating

Option 1 - ignore them and make them wait
Option 2 - politely decline their offer and tell them that you have a local buyer lined up
Option 3, get in to an exchange like the one you ended up having. Completely unnecessary and not worth your time. And I agree with others, you looked as bad as the RMH guy.
It's just so easy to go with option 1 or 2. No need to call people out for being a low baller or unreasonable, they already know that.

I'm of the opinion that you just treat kijiji as place of human beings as that's what it is. It sucks that there is a lack of decorum and low ballers and all that, but I still just try to project civility and clarity in discussion and it usually goes really well, even with lowballs.

Be direct for sure, and if someone is a bag of ****s then just ignore them. I've even got sales from people that started off rocky and ignore worthy but I just responded pointedly and the discussion progressed. With one guy posting the typical "Will take 40% of your ask". I actually had a polite but firm "lol, sorry bro not even close" followed by a further explanation of condition, which progressed to him agreeing to grab it for full price.

Then when he came he was really chill and funny and the interaction was like two old friends getting together. There's a lot lost in translation when people interact online.

For most of my Kijiji postings I'll get an offer within a few hours starting at 1/3 or 1/2 of my asking. Am pretty sure they do this for anything that may have better resale value... and odds are they do this because they're successful enough to make coin. I'll 1) ignore them at first, then 2) decline and say "sorry, too low plus I have enough interest. Feel free to increase your offer, but if you come within the next 30-45mins I'll let you have it for ~15% less than asking". The lowballers rarely follow through on this however I have been successful with this too.

I, too, am more virtuous and compassionate than pylon, for those of you keeping score out there.

I keep many scores around these parts. Even with your Kijiji kindness, I've still got you as a -12. Maybe next season.

That wasn't the point of anything anyone was saying.

Trying to sell a laptop.
Within 5 minutes... 3 different numbers text to my phone

Scam 1, 617 area code: "I pay paypal. Please ship to USA"
Scam 2, 205 area code: I'm still playing on this one... probably same as above
Scam 3, 587 area code: "I'm out of town on a business trip. I have reliable movers who will come meet you. I plan on paying by certified bank draft. I hope you know how to mobile deposit."

I love how the one thing scammers just can't nail down is "regular talk" with potential victims. It's such a major part of reeling someone in yet they just always sound way off.

I had a wanted ad for a PS5 a couple months ago and both scammers were just painfully stupid.

"I can't get rid of this thing, it's killing me, I'll sell it to you for $450 do you know PayPal?"

me "Umm, they're selling like crazy dude, that's why everyone's scalping them"

"Not me, I've tried eBay and other internet"

me "Cool, well good luck getting way less than they're going for new if they were in stock, you're holding on to a real paperweight there".

Interesting they would try to use paypal for their scam. From my experience with paypal its safe and a transaction can be disputed if a transaction goes sideways. Unless theres a new scam they use to get around that somehow

Is there a 3rd party service that sells a vehicle privately on your behalf? Thinking of selling a car but not interested in dealing with all the meatballs that reply to vehicle ads on kijiji

last few ads i have posted on kijiji i have lead with "i live in new brighton and if you are reading the ad the item is still available"

I then close with where i live.

Of course i get a perspective buyer asking me where i live. i swear, people just see the picture, get hot for the item and send a message - or there are a lot of people out in public with cognitive impairments

Depending on what kind of vehicle you've got you might be interested in these guys:
https://southtrailexports.com/

Full disclosure, I do know one of the owners, but I've gone through them myself (selling a truck), and I've referred a few friends there and no complaints.

I think most of their business is trucks and SUV's but they do do other vehicles.
Process, is you call them up, they may or may not come take a look at the vehicle, and they'll give you an offer.
Pretty much zero hassle and they can give pretty good prices on the right vehicles.

Wait, are they buying the vehicle from you or selling it for you for a fee? The wording there almost sounds like they're buying it off you to resell?

Yup they buy it from you.
Where they make their money is taking the cars down to the US to sell them where they are worth more/in higher demand, or maybe there is money to be made in the USD/CAD conversion.

When I sold a truck through them, I probably got $2-3k more from them than I could have gotten selling it to someone in Calgary.

Ah makes sense. I was just confused as the OP seemed to be asking for a service where they list the car for you. But hey, if they give you a good price, no reason not to go that route, and it sounds like they do.

^thanks, that sounds like zero hassle which is fantastic compared to selling on kijiji. When I sold my last car on kijiji I had dozens of replies and they all wanted to talk on the phone - I don't want to talk for hours about it, it's much faster and easier to go back and forth via email then arrange a meeting if still interested.

The only other item I've sold on kijiji that is comparable for frustration is a cell phone - for a $600 cell phone you'd think people were buying a $1M home. They wanted to know the manufacture date, prior use history, one guy even wanted to open it up and take a look at the battery himself
