Considering we're talking about whether Mangiapane is a top 6 forward or not, and terms "top line", "top 6", "bottom 6", etc.. are generally used to talk about 5v5 lines, PP production has nothing to do with the discussion of what line Mangiapane should be or is capable of playing 5v5

Vegas was very fortunate to not only get multiple premium assets from some teams who were scared of the expansion draft, but also scored Fleury who has been lights out. Sounds like the GMs have learned their lesson and I doubt Seattle will be able to make out as well. One thing for sure, there isn't a goalie of that caliber that will be available.

GMs may have learned from the Vegas draft, but they never saw the flat cap coming and many teams are going to look to shed cap space. Instead of paying the expansion team to avoid their stars and take, well in some cases other stars in the making, they will be paying Seattle to take bad contracts by likely adding picks or, again, other stars in the making.

I think this is accurate. I don't think Seattle is taking Lucic for example without getting a good pick and prospect as well.

I think it would be tough to build a cup winning team with a career high 17 goal scorer on the top line and a career high 10 goal scorer on your second line, not even taking into account that injuries happen.
I guess it's ok if we plan on missing the playoffs again in 2022.
|
Because most teams don’t put their top three forwards on the same line. A more common approach is two top forwards and a utility player.

This team cannot justify to this fan base that futures and good assets need to be sent to Seattle to text Gio. I think this fanbase will boil over if we send the Kraken a 2nd so they take Kylington.
The only way paying to protect Gio makes sense to me is if it appears they are paying Seattle to take Lucic. If the Flames send Seattle 2 2nd to take the final 2 years of Lucic or something like that I can get behind it because it takes away the worst contract in the bottom 6 and the fact Looch has been pretty solid since Peters resigned I think it is not completely out of the realm of possibility Seattle would consider taking him if the Flames sweeten the pot

Really hoping Backlund, Giordano, or Lucic get picked up by Seattle. All horrible contracts for what they bring at this point.

The flat cap is the reason I think the Flames should do a tankbuild. I was reading that the Flyers might have interest in Eichel, which makes a lot of sense. They would need to shed some salary big time. If the Flames can make big trades and get futures for them, they could also take advantage of teams and take their bad contracts. Voracek and Ghost both have bad contracts but you could go after their next 2 first rounders unprotected. They'll have to pay a LOT to get rid of those contracts and if it was to make room for Eichel, I think they would. They also have a few good prospects, that Foerster really looks good IMO.
There are other teams that would love to get rid of some contracts. If the Flames could take them back and target first rounders for the next 2 years, it would be great. If you trade with teams that are "bubble teams" like the Flames, you never know if it could win the lottery.
Voracek, Ghost, Skinner (just terribad but they would likely give up a TON to get rid of it), Johansen and Duchesne from the preds, Subban, Kuznetsov...the list goes on.
If the owners could be convinced that taking on a couple of bad contracts for a few years would help in the future, maybe they bite.

Gio with one year left would not be considered a horrible contract. He would bring back a very good draft pick at the deadline.
Backlund is still likely a very valuable piece for Calgary, and I wager there would be a huge hole in Calgary's lineup if he was gone.
Lucic is actually playing quite well for his current skill set, but with two years remaining on his contract, he's going nowhere. His contract remains quite bad, but not Neal-bad.

I can understand about Giordano and Lucic. But Backlund is useful players that can play against top Centres of other team and one of better PK of the team.
Backlund + Mangiapane is good combo in the 3rd line that can play and shut down other team's 1st or 2nd line and outscore their 3rd line. So better keep Backlund.

You are assuming the Calgary is considering rebuilding. I think there is zero chance of that.
Plus, I have never seen a team take on multiple contracts for multiple first round picks. I doubt Calgary sets that precedent.
I also find it humorous that whenever posters talk about trading a first round pick, it MUST be lottery protected, even in a trade for an elite player like Eichel. But take on a few bad contracts for first round picks, they CANNOT be lottery protected.

If the Flyers had a deal for Eichel but needed to get rid of one of Voracek or Ghost, I think they'd give up an unprotected first to finalize things. There will always be a team that will take the first even if it's protected but there are a lot of bad contracts out there. If a team did trade their first rounder in 2022 and it was protected, it would just be differed to the next year and wouldn't be protected that year. There are great prospects in both years so even that wouldn't be too bad of a thing.
As for the Flames trading away picks that MUST be protected, it's because the Flames are garbage right now. If a team things getting a player like Eichel will push them over the top, they'd would most likely do it if it was the only option.

They'll need those picks to get Eichel. Can't have both.

It was an example of what could happen. I doubt the Flames will even come close to rebuilding. If anything, I bet the Flames will trade away more picks than they get this year and I wouldn't even be surprised if they trade away this years or one of the next two years first round picks.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of Backlund and think he is overrated. Regardless, can the Flames really afford to pay someone 5+ million to play on the third line? Especially if they have to keep Lucic.
I would rather re-sign Ryan at $2 MM a year to play on the third line and groom Gawdin to become a shut down centre.

I agree Backlund is the guy we need Seattle to take , do what ever you need to in order for that to happen. He just isnt the same player anymore and does very little when he is out on the ice. His contract is by far the worst on the team due to the length of it still.

I'm betting the Kraken take Derek Ryan. Basically do what Vegas did and grab a pending UFA. He's from the area and Francis is very familiar with him.
I just don't want the Flames to be throwing picks at them to take a contract. The team can't afford to be doing that.

I still don’t understand why Vegas did that. Sign them as a ufa and take another asset. Taking a ufa is beyond dumb imo.

Best guess is that there just wasn't anything of value to the Knights on the Flames roster. Maybe there is this time around for Seattle? But they need to ice a roster, meet the cap floor, gather assets to sell off at the next deadline etc.

Midway through the year I would have said the chances of Seattle taking Gio are minimal due to his salary. But his pickup in play, and what they could deal him for later might be attractive to them now, and I’m actually not happy about it if it happens. He’s still the best point producer Calgary has.
Backlund will be protected. He may have too much term but I’d bet he could be dealt if necessary, with some retention. He’s still useful. And you’re right, Lucic isn’t going to be picked up.
Seattle will take Gio or Kylington, unless they pull an Engelland to Vegas move and take local boy Derek Ryan.
BTW, I think cap floor requirements are a pie in the sky hope when it comes to taking guys like Lucic. It’s pretty hard to not use up $60M, and there will be better options for them.
