Could be Darryl trolling the media who have been wondering about Phillips.

Let's wait and see what happens in the last two games.

Ruzicka just played his first game last night and he was even called up earlier when the Flames were still in the battle.

Darryl's got a pretty good eye for young talent that he's actually seen up close (can't say the same about the draft and young junior prospects though). In his career, I can't think of a young prospect who left his teams (San Jose, Chicago, Calgary, LA) and broke out. I remember we were pretty upset when he traded Saprykin and that was a guy who played regularly in the playoffs and scored one of the bigger OT goals in franchise history.

By all accounts, Phillips is one of the hardest working guys so the "earned part" doesn't make sense. I can't see Phillips not busting his ass in practice.

To play in the NHL at that size you need to be ridiculously skilled...its a pretty tall order

Kailer Yamamoto plays in the NHL at that size, and I would not call him "ridiculously skilled"

I think we can all agree that Phillips has earned a look. Not 'can this little guy survive in the NHL?' arguments. Has he done enough in the AHL to deserve a look? Absolutely.


Has this organization made it a mission to only give looks to very big players? Or very physical players? Or refuse to give players that start with the letter P 'just because'? Of course not. They have routinely given a lot of players a look (some less deserving of others).


They may not give players a 'fair shot'. That's valid. They may not slot players accordingly. They may not give enough rope. They may not give enough support. They may prioritize winning over development, etc., but in terms of just giving a prospect a game or two, this organization hasn't held back in giving a game or two at least to someone that has earned a look.


Phillips earned one, and he will get it.

IDK about the numbers being posted he looks a lot smaller to me. Yamamoto is small but solid.

He would have to be a top six player, time will tell I guess...if he gets a game I will be interested but the AHL numbers aren't jumping off the page.

Hope he wins the Hart but I think he is a longshot for the NHL

Yamamoto has 15 pounds on Phillips. 15 pounds packed into a smaller player gives him that rubber ball effect. A few guys were like that, including Fleury. 5’6”, 180 at his heaviest.

Matthew Phillips 5'7 155 lbs
Kailer Yamamoto 5'8 153 lbs

About the same.

Nathan Gerbe is similar to Fleury. 5'4 but 176 lbs. Pretty high body mass index, or whatever it's called.

I'm not one to trust listed weights either way, but I'd take the team-posted stats on AHL and NHL official websites over hockeyDB.

I think if there's a difference in weight between Phillips and Yamamoto, it's negligible. If there's a difference in pedigree, I'd argue it's because one guy is a September birthday and was 18 during his draft year whereas Phillips was 17. If there's a difference in skill, hockey sense, or compete level, it's not something I've seen apparent in my viewings of either player at any level.

One guy, however, does play on an NHL line with a Hart Trophy winner, and the other guy apparently doesn't deserve a look in the NHL.

I don't know that we all agree on that. 8 goals, 21 points in 30 games in his third pro season. For a player that is all offense.

I really don't have strong feelings on this and whether or not he gets a look as I see both him and Pettersen (who while younger, I view somewhat similarly) as very fringe prospects.

I have respect for the time Scorp has put in watching these guys and so based on his comments, I'd like to see Phillips get a shot. But that's about the only reason, for me.

I guess it might be more fun to watch the little guy play than some of the fringe NHLers we're dressing now so there is that.

I’m not sure either side can be trusted, for different reasons. There’s nothing more fudged than player height and weight, including by their own team. MSL’s used to always be exaggerated. I don’t think Gaudreau is 5’9”, and I think Fleury was not even 5’6”.

That said, the fudging would exist for Yamamoto too, so it’s all relative.
