I think this tells you all you need to know where the Flames are on Matthew Philips at this point, though he could be nursing an injury as well.

I don't know. I would still be surprised if Matthew Philips doesn't get a look.

There is no rebuild coming with Darryl here. This team is making changes to compete and the rebuild crown need to wait another year or two to get their wish or maybe we all get our wish and they make changes over the summer and this team is vastly improved next year?

Not much to say, beyond how I'm confident Phillips will get a shot in some organization at some point.

It doesn't mean Philips wont get a chance at a spot in training camp next year either.

Playing a game now in an emotionless environment against the Canucks is hardly going to have a bearing on his future.

I still think he is far to small to stick, but he will be given a better look next year im guessing.

Weren't you bullish on Morgan Klimchuk too?

Just asking.

I watched Klimchuk far less than I've seen Phillips. I thought Klimchuk's boxcar stats in 2017-18 were very impressive and his usage on both special teams units was intriguing. I also liked his showings at development camps and thought his skillset would translate pretty easily into an NHL role.

Then, he got traded and basically fell off the face of the hockey world. I maintain there could have been a future where he became an NHL player. Didn't turn out that way, but that's hockey.

Phillips is far better — no contest. I'm not eligible to vote for Heat players in the AHL awards balloting, but if I could, he would have made my North Division all-star team without a sweat.

In looking at a short highlight video of Phillips from the 19/20 season he looks like a smaller version of Johnny.

On the plus side he looked like he's not afraid to go to the net and in one highlight he laid a massive open ice body check.

He's listed at 140 pounds though and is 23 so not likely he's going to get much bigger.

Phillips' most recent measurements put him at 5'7", 155.

Is it possible that Sutter is waiting on Phillips’ first NHL game to be when friends and family can attend and not a meaningless game to an empty arena?

Ok. So exactly Johnny size. Still, don't think too many teams can ice more than one of these size players. Maybe he'll end up being Johnny's replacement but it doesn't appear like he has the same talent level. At 22 Gaudreau was point per game in the NHL.

I’m not overly high on him and admittedly it’s mostly because of his size but even I think he has earned a look.

Pretty sure philips and his family would rather he just play his first NHL game.

Or maybe he just simply forgot about him during the presser

3:00 on. It doesn't sound like he outright said no to putting Phillips in, but no one pressed further and asked specifically about him.

"Quite honest, we've played the prospects. I don't know who else, if there's anyone else that anybody wants to see"

I bet Phillips will still play one of the last two games, Darryl simply forgot about the little guy.

This is like the time that Notre Dame got a new coach that didn't know about the deal made with Rudy...

Yeah there’s no way he’s write him off like that. Let’s not analyze every single statement to be exact.
