The timing is hard though. Buffalo probably waits right until the draft to drive up prices. As a GM I’d want to know Gaudreau’s intentions long before then so I could either rely on him re-signing or trade him before his LNTC kicks in.

I think this has the LA Kings written all over it. They have the best assets of any team that could be in the running.

Maybe a bidding war for Eichel shakes loose some other assets from teams who won't get him.
Although if I hear at the end of the summer that the trade market was blocked until the Eichel deal was done, which went on longer than expected, I'll be royally pissed.

Kings make sense because they are in the West and have the assets. 3 $10M+ players for LA if that deal goes through though. I believe Blake has been quoted to say he expects the Kings to exit their rebuild sooner than later.
The Rangers also make a ton of sense especially if you believe some of the reporting that Dolan is growing impatient and wants to speed things up then they will certainly have interest. Lafreniere/Kakko based package or Byfield/Turcotte type package sure beats a Tkachuk+ with $9M QO looming

Somehow he needs to end up in Chicago after you suggested that.

lol dammit.
Now I'm like 95% sure Eichel will be traded this off-season and I want Eichel on the Flames. Talk about setting myself up for disappointment.

I am a few pages behind, but this is so wrong.
If you're referring to the quotes noted in OP, this is a disgusting take. I don't know if you're too close to the game, and part of this 'old boys club' with your media history, but players should never be faulted with putting their long term health over the team success now.
To show an extreme example of what should occur- NHL Stanley Cup finals, Game 7, going into OT, Star goalie thinks he has a concussion and back-up is fresh from the AHL, the only right move we should cheer for is the player stepping off the ice. The NHL is a for-profit business. That is all it is.
Back to the story at hand -he seems like a player who is being forced to try to justify why he is standing up for his long term health. That is the reason for part of the quote you are hitting on -the "sometimes you have to take care of yourself" - he shouldn't have been put into a position to have to justify it and say it!
Safety is a responsibility for both the employer and employee. Any other industry, the Sabers as the employer would be hung out to dry for this behavior.
It's sickening.

I don't know NY labour laws but he could likely have a law suit against the sabers if he has documentation that they wouldn't let him get surgery.
I doubt it comes to that.. but how the heck could he still play for them? He has to be traded.

A few factors to consider
- If Eichel, who is also injured, formally demands a trade, it puts Buffalo in a position of weakness. They'll have to take the best offer, even if it's 70 cents on the dollar.
- Buffalo is desperate to make the playoffs and keep their fanbase engaged. Trading some of our better assets in their areas of need (wingers like Tkachuk and defensemen like Giordano/Hanifin/Tanev) might be the short term fix they're looking for. With Reinhart and Middlestadt looking good down the middle, they might be open to focusing on their wings and blueline. Their management also seems... poor.
- The Flames might not be immediate contenders by adding Eichel, but they'd have a foundation to build on. And Eichel may have another gear under a demanding, detail oriented, and proven coach like Darryl Sutter.
- The Flames under Treliving have consistently had better depth than Buffalo, and this year has largely been an outlier. I would assume we'd even keep Backlund around. So If you can build around Eichel, Lindholm, and Backlund as your 1-2-3 at center, the wings can be filled in externally. Say what you want about Tre, but we haven't missed the playoffs in consecutive years. Even after the disasterous 2018 season, we made a quick turnaround.
- Markstrom on paper would probably be a better goalie than anyone Buffalo has employed since Lehner. He's had a bad year, but probably is due for a good one.

If we could trade Tkachuk, Monahan in a package for Eichel, Reinhart we would be trading some core pieces. Vintage Tkachuk could reestablish himself with a new team that supports him, the Sabres would have a center in Monahan. .
The Flames then would have Eichel, Lindholm, Backlund/Reinhart down the middle with a few good wingers in Johnny, Dube and Eatbread. Getting quality wingers is a lot easier than gaining an elite center. I think the Flames should go all in and try and get this done, if they are not going to rebuild.
Watching the Reinhart interview in Buffalo, he looks demoralized, disappointed that they are still trending at the bottom. He is a guy I could see having a Bennett like resurgence, he can play wing or center; Plus his dad played for the Flames.

Can't see Tkachuk going to Buffalo as that's 2 years at 9 million each and then very likely he leaves. Unless they're pretty sure he'll want to re-sign no way Buffalo gives up Eichel for that.

Why not, if things don't work as planned they could always trade him like they did with Hall? Buffalo is going to do Buffalo things, who knows maybe Chucky is high on their list!

Monahan+Valimaki+Pelletier+1st. I would be weary of going higher than that.

I suppose. And if they want Chucky then you do that deal all day long.

I think we could do better if we targeted Reinhart as well as he does not look like he wants to stay in Buffalo. Looks completely demoralized. He is another player the Flames could give a new lease on life.

The first round pick is maybe the most valuable piece there. Unfortunately i don’t think this offer even gets a counter.
You have to give up one very high quality asset IMO.

If Hanifin's worth more than Valimaki, you do it.
If Dube is worth more than Pelletier, you do it.
If it takes more draft picks or prospects, you do it, although you protect yourself from a Shane Wright lotto protection mishap.
