New Jersey, on top of having many recent high picks, will probably pick top 4 this year.
They also have THIRTY-SEVEN MILLION in cap space this summer.
I call that better shape.

Looking at that
- Recent high pick (6OA Monny) plus surprise Gaudreau who in a redraft would be also a top 10
- 4 OA pick
- tons of cap space
That is like what Tre walked in to
Paraphrasing another post earlier, bad management can ruin a promising situation

So can high draft picks that turn into busts or regress earlier than expected.

In terms of the 4th OA pick and cap space, it's similar.
But Alexander Holtz (7th), Jack Hughes (1st), Nico Hischier (1st), Pavel Zacha (6th) is a lot more than Monahan (6th).
The oldest forward on the Devils is 26 years old. All but 2 are 24 or younger. All of their forwards except Andreas Johnson will be RFAs when their contracts expire.
It will be harder to mess that up than the team that Treliving walked into. The Devil's have genuinely been good at signing their younger players to good contracts.
But yeah, when cap space is wasted on old vets that room can run out in a hurry.
They should probably use some but not all of it this summer.

Coming into the season. We were expected to be competing for a top 5 pick. It was a cinderella season based on extreme luck that was dubbed as “Find a way Flames”. We were never contenders and Anaheim brushed us out of the way like the pretenders we were. That mirage was the reason we went after Dougie Hamilton and management misjudged that we were further ahead than we actually were. It set the events in motion which led to where we are today and the dire situation the organization finds itself in. We never properly bottomed out because it was never made an objective of the organization.
They should have known the caliber of McDavid and done everything in their power to get him. Everyone knew McDavid was going to be this good. They know the caliber of Bedard and should do everything in their power to get him. Everyone knows Bedard is gonna be great.
If the Flames lose the lottery, then whatever. But i will say one thing - without a player like that - the Flames will forever be mediocre. Forget McDavid. The Oilers also have Draisaitl. That management literally has the easiest job in the league filling out a roster. Those 2 alone will make them competitive. Imagine if the Oilers got an actual goaltender and Evan Bouchard blossoms like Byron Bader is saying he will. Then the real misery of the Flames fan will actually begin.

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of who might go 3rd in the 2023 draft.
If I'm not mistaken whichever teams comes in last will have the best chance at Bedard/Michkov and be guaranteed the next best player. However this is subject to the 2022 lottery result.

Have fun selling Flames owners on that one.
'Hey, we're going to do all we can to be as bad as we can this season in the slim hopes that we can win the draft lottery'
'Well, what if you don't win the lottery?'
'Whatever.'

Adam Fantilli a late 04 who could challenge for #1 in the 2023 draft, more likely though some team is going to lose the draft lottery, end up picking 3rd, and then somehow leave with Adam Fantilli lol

You do understand that the Leafs ownership authorized a tank for Matthews right? I mean if you don’t win the lottery, you’re not going to end up with a bum. You try, try again until you get it right.

Flames will make the playoffs once and miss once in the next 2 seasons. We will not win a playoff series and not draft in the top 5.

Alrighty then. Like I said, try selling that to Flames owners. 'Hey guys we're going to just keep tanking until we get it right.' I'm sure the fans will turn out in droves while that's happening.
Sounds easy peasy for fans, but you actually need to win the lottery.

THN is also touting Brayden Yager, a big-bodied C with speed, and a complete game, who plays for Moose Jaw, as somebody who could challenge for #1.

More than 80% chance you don't win even if you are dead last...and dead last is hard. They were pretty fortunate

Ya but if you don’t get 1st overall. you end up with your version of an Eichel caliber player. Still pretty great.

Should mention that Michkov was named U-18 MVP with 12 goals-the most ever by a Russian, and 2nd most in the history of the tourney. The Media All-Star Team consisted of Michkov, Bedard (F), Tuomaala (F), Clarke (D), Heimosalmi (D), and Ivanov (G).

That year was a better than average draft in the top 10. Laine, Tkachuk, Dubois, Keller, Nylander, Sergachev, plus Puljujarvi who was supposed to be good (and Juolevi). So it wasn’t as big a risk as other years.

The difference can be pretty stark though. Patrick Kane or JVR? Crosby or Ryan? Lecavalier or Legwand?

Bedard is absolutely insane.
Tank it hard for Bedard.
That backhand to tie the game tonight.... filthy.

I’d say that drafting is significantly better than a decade ago. Way more data sets. Also - 2023 is shaping up to be a very deep draft.
