Last game I'm pretty sure sure Ward had full intentions of maxing Backlund's time because of McDavid. So he knew the 4th would get hardly anything. it's not shocking that he played the only regular on that line, Nordstrom, a little more.
|
And that is as it should be.
However, Ward has shown a propensity to continue to roll 4 lines when trailing in the 3rd period. Baffling and frustrating.

I’d like to see those stats. I suspect he gives the 4th line one or two shifts if they are trailing. It’s just that everyone howls when they even get any time.

It also seems that the lines go in the blender when they are trailing. When that happens, individual 4th-liners might show up anywhere.

The Athletic ran an article about who the “worst” NHL shooters are from an efficiency standpoint. Nordstrom was #1 by a fair bit.
Quote:
This is mostly just a who’s who of forgettable bottom-six players, with Calgary’s Joakim Nordstrom, who’s estimated as being 32.3 percent worse than the average NHL shooter, leading the way.
|
Dominik Simon was in the top 10 worst shooters list also.

Interesting article and it doesn’t surprise me to see Nordstrom, Simon, or Backlund make the various lists.

I still think they re-sign Nordstrom to a one-year deal, for the fourth line and PK time.
He's been decent under Sutter.

Toby Reider > Nordstrom for me. Wish we would’ve kept him.

I wished they saved the money from Simon and Nordstrom and kept Hathaway.

The Flames are the 5th lowest scoring team in the league. Just below New Jersey, Buffalo and Los Angeles. Calgary has also allowed the 11th fewest goals (this is actually pretty impressive for a team that is 3 games below .500).
While I like a lot of aspects of Nordstrom's play, I just don't think the Flames can use a forward who only has 4 points in 39 games.
That goes for the other fourth line guys too. Only Ryan is producing as much as a 4th liner should. But a 3.5 mill player should be getting more than a 20 point pace. If he is re-signed, he should be paid less (I hope this is the case).
In a league with so much parity, the difference between a 20 point 4th liner and a 5 point 4th liner is huge.

He ticks another box too, which is someone to expose to Seattle. Lucic is one, need one more F signed until 2022.
But I'd prefer Ryan for that need

For expansion exposure keep, but if anything we need to see guys like Pelletier etc get more time on the team.

They’re similar but Nordstrom is a punishing hitter. Reider can score more and is a bigger short handed goal threat.

Honest question - has Nordstrom thrown a big hit this year? I’m missing the punishing hitter aspect of his game for sure.
Like he will finish his checks...but I’m not sure it classifies as punishing.

He hits almost every game and they look like they hurt. I’d say he hits harder than anyone except Lucic (and the odd reverse hit by Tkachuk). That includes the D.
ETA: Forgot about Ritchie - he hits harder but they are usually close to charges.

I wish Hathaway was still here too but you can't save any money from those two contracts. At $700K that's as cheap as it comes for NHL roster filler.
What Hathaway brought was energy, youth, speed, physicality and a cheap contract. Pretty good on the PK too.
Successful teams have those kinds of bottom roster players come up through the system to fill out the roster and play above their salaries.
Prospects like Phillips and Pettersen certainly have potential but they're not bringing those elements. They're more in the Czarnik mold so if they're not scoring, they're not doing much for you.
Maybe Ruzicka can be that player next year? Doesn't look like it's happening for Gawdin.

I'll be hugely dismayed if Nordstrom is re-signed. As much as coaches might love a guy that works hard every shift, blocks shots, and does what is asked of him, the team is one of the worst offensive groups in the league and do not have superstars that can carry their defensive minded teammates.
Sutter had an interesting comment in his media availability yesterday where he essentially said that the team has learned how to play the way he wants them to, but the question of whether these players can generate enough offence in his style will be answered at a later date. I took this to mean that he wants personnel changes in the off-season.
