That assumes it wasn't Brad that told him.

Sutter was probably expecting Bennett to be traded - we all were. The Flames very likely communicated with him. They just didn't let Sutter have the final say on a strategic decision.

And the end of the day, the Flames got a good return for Bennett. Treliving would have been crazy to reject Florida's offer based on kind quote from Sutter.

It's possible that Bennett never even fully rescinded his trade request. We still lack information, and I think it's unfair to make such angry and definitive conclusions like this.
It's a pretty standard nice thing to say by a fairly new coach to a guy that's leaving, IMO. He probably said something similar to Rittich.

Treliving and Sutter have dinner together all the time on the road. I am sure player movement was discussed on many occasions, and Sutter probably had an idea that Bennett might move.

Do the assistant coaches join them?

Primarily steakhouses?

Bleacher Report muses about a Gaudreau to New Jersey trade.

This move would enable the Flames to commence retooling their roster, freeing up cap room for other deals if necessary. The Devils have some young players such as Yegor Sharangovich and Janne Kuokkanen and prospects like Dawson Mercer or Cal Foote who could interest the Flames.
Sharangovich is interesting, 22 year old Center, just scored his 14th goal of the season last night. Mercer and Foote are good prospects as well, NJ could put together a good package for Gaudreau.

After seeing what Bennett is doing in Florida I would be more open to getting Nolan Patrick from Philly. Similar situation a former elite prospect who has not really wowed anyone since being drafted.

Not as a centerpiece for Gaudreau mind you but as part of the deal or as a separate deal I am in

I think Patrick could probably be had for fairly cheap this coming off season but other than that, I don't think Philly makes a good trade partner for the Flames. NJ has a ton of younger players and prospects and the team seems like it's trying to take that next step.

When they trade Gaudreau, they have to think about the future and not try to get things that will help them get that coveted 8th playoff seed for a few years.

Huge history of migraine issues/problems dating back before he was drafted.
Playing @ Calgary's altitude = NOPE for migraines.

Patrick is more of a bust than Bennett is at this point, I'd take him as a "here have this" piece but his value is nothing at this point, I wouldn't even trade a 2nd rounder for him.

I've touted NJD as a trading partner for months now, but everyone seems to insist on PHA and Konecny.

I would be happy with a 1st or 2nd along with any two of - Zacha, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen, or Mercer.

If you look at the rosters and cap situations, Gaudreau to NJ makes a lot more sense than Philly.

I don't think they will trade Gaudreau.

I’d go even bigger in that trade and see if Monahan can be included to get Hischer.

Devils could use a second line centre with some size to play behind the smaller Hughes who also happens to have some chemistry with Gaudreau.

Hischer has had some injury problems and a big contract but I think he could really develop in a Sutter system.

Johnny and Mony for Hischer, one of Zacha / Sharangovich / Luokkanen could work for both teams. The Devils are a young team so infusing a couple of “young vets” might be good for them.

I think they just named Hisher captain, I can't see them trading him.

No way they move Hischier, he is going to become Bergeron.

NJ is a good spot to grab someone. Assuming they’re all in on Hughes and Hischier as their 1-2 punch, I would think that Zacha could get a real good look as the 2C here (maybe even 1C if he explodes). He’s having a good year in NJ.

I like New Jersey a lot as trade partner. They have all sorts of goodies the Flames need.

Zacha, McLeod, Mercer, Sharangovich, Wedgewood for back up

Lots of angles to attack a trade . Heck see 8f you could squeeze Holtz put of em. Doubtful, but try.

Just get draft picks.

What’s the end game with acquiring someone like Zacha? Just continue to be a bubble team/a touch worse or better?

Well for starters he’s barely turned 24. We’re gonna need someone to fill Backlund’s void at 2C sooner or later. Could also flip Monahan to another team (like the Jackets) for their top pick, or something along those lines.

I agree. Even if you want a full rebuild trading getting players like zacha have potential to add to that rebuild without ruining your chances at a top pick. Not sure why people think you have to trade everyone to be at the bottom and rebuild. Every team at the bottom has good players. Some are stars like Eichel or Seth jones or John Gibson or kopitar and doughty. Unless zacha becomes a superstar not sure he is ruining our chances at top picks. If he is a superstar isn’t that the point?

I could see hanifin being in a deal to NJ too. Not saying I think he gets traded but I still think he might. McLeod might be a sneaky cheap pick up. He’s probably dropped in the pecking order in NJ. Love to get the 2 firsts they have too. I bet they probably keep zacha at this point
