Pretty sure he's confirmed to show. If he doesn't that's going to be a huge hit to his campaign (unless he has a legitimately good reason).

Can we please stop this for a few more months? Do we really need municipal campaigns to be 6 months long?

He never accepted any offer to appear at any debate. He's fifty points ahead in the polls and obviously this is just a ploy from Gondek to try to elevate her single digit standing with voters.

Hey, I agree, but why would Farkas be dodging her in April if he wasn't confident he's far enough ahead for it not to matter? He has everything to lose and nothing to gain by debating this early. I can't find any other polls out there, but I also can't understand why people here seem to think it will be a competitive race.

Did Nenshi turn off that many progressives and centrists that everyone is fully on-board with Farkas now, even though he's made a complete disaster of himself as a Councillor in his first term?
You'd think if it was a slam dunk he could just stand at the podium and make smirks to the camera and doze off while Gondek makes her case.

The only way Gondek has a chance is if Davison gets in the race by the end of May, which I think is likely. There's no path to victory in a two horse race against Farkas for her, just like there was no way for Nenshi to win had Higgins and McIver not split the right wing vote in 2010.

I'd gladly admit that anything can happen, Mayor Nenshi was polling at 8% on September 19, 2010.

This Farkas guy has a machine behind him. I used to live in Pincott's ward and Farkas was out there for a solid two years before the last municipal election knocking on doors and talking people into putting up signs on their lawn. Now, with the solid backing of the MC behind him, I just don't see him losing unless he's involved in a Magliocca-type scandal, which is unlikely, or Davison getting in the race and spoiling the party.

I know absolutely nobody who will be voting for Farkas.

The only reason Farkas won his council seat is because the vote was split between 2 progressive-ish candidates.
Not sure what has changed that he is now some unstoppable juggernaut.
He has a chance to win, which really makes me depressed about the city in general, but previous Nenshi voters aren’t likely to break for Farkas over Gondek.
Farkas has been an embarrassment, and would continue to be so. I hope people in Calgary can see through his grandstanding and “woe is me” attitude to see him for what he really is, which is a visionless talking head who hasn’t made a real tangible contribution to making the city any better.
He’s really good at complaining, voting No, and saying things should go to a plebiscite, because god forbid he actually put his name on something.

I shouldn't have to tell you that Common Sense Calgary is a right-wing advocacy group with absolutely zero polling credentials. I shouldn't have to tell you to think about what that means for the inherent bias in the conduct of this poll, the people polled, and the results. I shouldn't have to tell you why there's this poll, and literally no other mayoral polls 6 months out, and what it all means. So I'm not going to.
Honestly, if the people who buy into Common Sense Calgary believe Farkas has it wrapped up in a bow, that's a really great thing, because it means they're less likely to vote.

Conservative politicians often duck and dodge debates, precisely because they have everything to lose by appearing alongside other candidates. Usually they get embarrassed when pressed by the opposition in an open forum, so they just don't go to open forums. It was a fundamental election strategy of the Conservative Party under Stephen Harper: all MP candidates were instructed not to attend debates and other all-parties public forums, and not to talk to media. They talked to 'friendly' media outlets that the party sought to talk to, and attended forums set up themselves. The UCP did the same thing in the provincial election two years ago.
I've lived in Calgary-Elbow and Calgary Centre my whole life, and I can scarcely remember all-candidates debates that PC/UCP and PC/CP candidates actually went to. Obviously King Ralphie and Alison Redford didn't attend the local ones because they were premiers, but Doug Schweitzer ducked every debate he could last election. Gordon Dirks did the same in his brief time as MLA. Federally, Joan Crockatt attended one, maybe two debates in 2012, and none in 2015; I can't recall Lee Richardson ever going to one in his entire time in office. Greg McLean did one at Western Canada High in 2019.

I do believe it'll be a very competitive race, because for all his faults Jeromy Farkas has conservative media strongly on his side and the man is extremely adept at getting his name out there on issues that Calgarians bitch and complain about, even if he doesn't have any cogent solutions. All the same outlets that were endorsing Bill Smith last election will be pushing Farkas this time around.
That said, I don't believe a poll conducted by (/for) "Common Sense Calgary". They're a blatantly biased conservative PAC supported by the Manning Centre and the UCP: of course they're going to say "their guy" is the shoe-in...

A little disingenuous to advertise a one on one debate when one party didn't respond to the invite, surely?

You’d think he would be up for it with all of his fantastic ideas. Maybe he has some thoughts about DQ.

She’ll still be there answering questions. Farkas could’ve been, probably would’ve been if he was the people’s champ and not a snivelling coward with zero ideas.
You want someone willing to discuss their vision for Calgary in front of the citizens of Calgary, or someone who hides out at mom’s house? Hard choice.
