Two names that came to mind right away were Iggy and Chris Pronger (he's not as likeable but is a good personality). A guy like Joe Thornton feels like he would be great at it too once he retires.

There are no NHL players like Charles Barkley lol

You would probably get fined and benched for showing that much personality as a player

Per the NHL's usual business model, I assume I'll have to get an ESPN subscription, a TNT subscription, NHL Center Ice or Game Center or something, and still not be able to watch every game unless I have the right cable package.

Roenick is an impovershived man's Barkley

Sean Avery?

Brodeur seems to have personality from his Enterprise commercials alone.

Bryzgalov?

Brett Hull is a bit of a character...

Byfuglien might have the same body as Barkley.

Chelios?

Chara would bring a dynamic from his size alone.

Hull and Chelios are both American. Leah Hextall as host?

You know there's no way Buff will sit on TV and just talk about hockey, eh? He loved to play hockey but, from what I understand, he didn't really follow it. There's a bit of a joke I heard about him on a podcast that when Buff was draft eligible some other players were asking him questions about hockey and he didn't know who Joe Sakic was. Either he didn't or he was so deadpan than it probably wouldn't work for TV colour.

They will show all games in the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, 2025 and 2027, one conference final series each season and half of the first two rounds of the playoffs along with 72 regular-season games per season.
Bleacher Report, which is owned by Turner, will have rights to use NHL highlights on its digital platform.

The Stanley Cup Final will air on ABC in in 2022, 2024, 2026 and 2028 as part of the deal with the Walt Disney Co. and ESPN. They have the rights to air one conference final round per season, half of the first two rounds of the playoffs, 25 regular-season games on ABC or ESPN, and 75 additional national games that will stream on ESPN+ and Hulu.

They will also stream more than 1,000 out-of-market games each regular season on ESPN+, which will replace NHL.TV.

So the deal in total has tripled from what it was last time?
Is that what i am to understand?

If so, pretty good work by the league.

 Players should be thrilled.

I'm more than a little bit concerned that when presented with "likeable people" as a requirement, you came to the table with Sean Avery and Chris Chelios.

I didn’t know turner owned Blecher Report. That is one of my favorite apps for NBA stuff specifically the trade scenarios they often write articles for nearly daily for NBA. Hopefully this will greatly increase their NHL coverage. I am pretty sure Cabbie left TSN to go to the Bleacher Report in some capacity.

And we're stuck with sportsnet and their 720p they try to pass as 1080p in the age of 4K.

Yeah if I have to have multiple subs - I’ll be done with the NHL - I have 1 foot out the door already

I wonder if there will be some more $'s trickling in from other streaming deals before said and done.

Disney was paying $100 million to run nhl.tv, now nhl.tv will be rolled into ESPN+

I think it "only" doubled. NHL was getting $100M for streaming services in addition to the $200M from NBC

Now they're getting a total of ~$625M

But I think they were expecting $800M to $1B pre pandemic. So not sure if they're dissappointed or not

They'll be getting ~$1B if you add in Rogers portion (and convert from CDN to USD). So just over $30M per team

How much do the teams get for their local deals?

I think I recall TML getting like $70M? Flames about $20m?

Likeable and entertaining seem to be mutually exclusive in hockey (at least among retired players...Thornton, Burns, Subban, Ovy seem to have the magic)
