Thought Bennett was holding back here. Considering what happened in the playoffs then getting more 3rd and 4th line time I thought he might have been holding back. Same thing we are seeing with Chucky. Disappointing with Matt because he gets paid to be that player.

Gee I hope the team doesn't listen to the braintrust here that tells us everything is Johnny's fault and ship him out too.

Can we not just be happy with both what the Flames received in the trade and the fact he is doing well on a team that is easy to cheer for?

Benny with a great rush, turned away by Saros. Then sets up Duclair for a great chance on the next shift.
“Hot take”: Ah, he’s a better centre than Sean Monahan and Mikael Backlund. It’ll become even more evident next season as the sample size grows.
The Calgary Flames sure “Calgary Flames’d” this situation.

Who would have thought that a player who consistently drives scoring chance type metrics when not playing with Troy Brouwer, while having strong underlying shot supression metrics in every instance of ever playing center, might see some of those shots and chances go in when the players on the ice with him are competent.

LOL, way to not take the bait.
You just can't help yourself, and I kinda love it.

Sam Bennett is playing the way I’ve wanted him to play for a long time here. I said it years ago I wanted him to play a more simple Ryan Smyth type game. Just go hard to the net, be heavy, screen, tip, deflect and get those greasy rebound goals. Every goal he’s scored for the Panthers so far has been a few feet in front of the net.
Instead, the Sam Bennett we got was the former 4th overall pick that wanted to go 1 on 1 and dangle through everyone and score highlight reel goals. It’s a shame, but I give all the credit to Florida. They have the talent that can surround the grittiness that Sam Bennett brings on to the ice. Sort of like how a Zach Hyman can play so well with Auston Matthews.

Often and with good linemates?
Yes, he is.

He literally attempted that THIS game. And almost scored.

^Yes, he is actually playing a different style of hockey overall, but he was trending that direction with the Flames this year, it's just that he had no minutes and awful linemates to do that with, so there wasn't much in terms of results.
I noticed that Sam finally figured out his game this year. He still tries to dangle now and then, but he is much more straightforward in his style of game. Grinding, front of net, driving the puck towards the net whenever he can. He's just finally settled into who he is, but unfortunately it's with a different team.
Helps to play with Huberdeau too. He's got an incredible linemate there.

Sam Bennett played with Monahan and Gaudreau this season quite often and didn’t look anything like he does with Florida. He can’t play a purely skilled game in the long run, he has to hit, be physical, go hard to the net and play in the guts of the game.
It’s a new team, new situation for him and he’s probably still jacked. But once the novelty wears off and he’s playing in game 50 next season, he won’t be playing with the same jump. So I don’t really think what we’re seeing from him now is what he will be going forward either. So he really shouldn’t be relying on the one on one stuff long term, it’s not a sustainable style for him IMO.

Uh, citation please.
On a side note, as a former season ticket holder, I got a call today to invite me to purchase playoff tickets after the Panthers officially clinched a playoff spot.
I just can't see myself going to a stadium with a bunch of other people yet. Just seems like a bit of a bad idea.

Yeah, and that's the issue.
He played on Monahan's wing.
That line spent all its time defending because Monahan's not a great defensive center and Bennett's not a right winger.
If Bennett had been centering Gaudreau and a natural winger like Mangiapane, you might have a case.
He also never got the ACTUAL top6 icetime that he's getting in Florida.

I think Monahan and Johnny are hard to have chemistry, or play with. Not a good fit for Bennett. Maybe coaching was an issue, or maybe Bennett was lacking confidence with the Flames? The stark difference in the way Darryl handled Bennett vs Ward; Ward was benching Bennett, Sutter was giving Bennett opportunities and letting hid run with it. Same thing Florida is doing! Bennett looks happy and re-energized and even if he does settle down we are seeing some progress we didn't see with the Flames.

Bennett played several games with Monahan and Gaudreau this season and in the past. My citation will be several posters who can verify this. It was a pretty big story line at times in CP.
