I see where you are coming from, but asking that a Drive-thru be built the same way it was previously hardly necessitates claims of the great "social engineering" boogeyman.
I assume DQ drive thrus don't suffer from the same traffic issues as other more popular chains, it is still a huge issue when dealing with traffic in an area.
I am sure we can all agree that the Timmies lines that spill out onto the road in the morning is one of the most frustrating things for any morning commute. I was actually on 16th the over day and the lineup for Peter's was about 20 cars deep on the Trans Canada Highway!
So, yes, socially engineer our drive thrus so i dont have to get stuck behind twenty jacked up trucks/SUVs waiting for a ####ing burger and shake on the god damn trans Canada HIGHWAY
There are so many dumb design flaws that exist in this city (and others) related to past decision making processes. Heaven forbid the City takes a hard-line on a few cases that want to deviate from the plan.

Really important matter in front of Council today - the Greater Downtown Plan.
It's appropriately ambitious.

So when Farkas was pressed about the petition he just backed down rather than answering questions?

No surprise. He's a grandstanding hack lacking anything resembling substance or ideas. Just a total clown and an embarrassment for the city.

It bothers me that his name is spelled Jeromy.

Which is a shame, because he doesn't care about this city. Not really. He just wants to hammer on populist talking points to get people riled up so he can get elected.
Anyone that actually cared wouldn't be so vapid and anyone that had any real character would feel ashamed be to so totally devoid of ideas while trying to be a pubic servant.

The one on his website about the DQ thing? If it is like any of his past engagements on questions, it's just an email harvesting exercise.

Yeah. Actually feel like making up some fake emails and seeing what the result is.

And it passed Council with a vote of 12 in favour verses 1 opposed. If anyone is wondering why that doesn't add up to 15, Councillor Demong was absent today, and there's currently a vacancy on Council after Jones resigned for health reasons.
I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine who the lone naysayer against the Downtown Plan was. You can probably guess correctly with one attempt.

What's even the point of electing Farkas as mayor? Seems like council would just continue to make decisions without him (which is actually quite comforting).

The idea is to elect a slate of Manning Centre and UCP-aligned candidates to give hypothetical Mayor Farkas a majority on council.

But why? A Calgary run like that would be a spectacularly crappy place to live.
Not really getting some of the candidates. New Ward 3 candidate saying he’s goint to be touch on crime. What crime? I mean, it’s not really *that* bad around here that it would be a platform issue.

The ones currently on council don’t even vote with Farkas enough of the time.

So Calgary’s Farkus = Edmonton’s Nickel.
Every major city has a goof, it seems.
I hope neither ever gets to occupy the mayor’s chair.

I will admit to not having read up on the Greater Downtown Plan before, so here are some good slides via Madeline Smith that show where the money's going:
https://twitter.com/user/status/1386722400092385282
https://twitter.com/user/status/1386722564483936259

The $200M is coming from:
Quote:
with $123 million coming from city reserves and an additional $77 million in anticipated federal infrastructure funding. Officials said that’s just a start, and over the next decade, central neighbourhoods need $1 billion of investment, with the private sector, province and feds coming to the table.

Long but interesting Twitter thread on today’s council session.
- looks like there was some mention of data harvesting from many of the petitions over the DQ
- farkas wanted to discuss the DQ issue and was rightly chastised due to the ethics of such a discussion
- lots of interesting details on the plan itself and some great insight into councillors thought process.
- one farkas’ big worry with the plan was the cost... of parking

Imagine if somebody who wanted to make the city a better place to live actually succeeded. Then people might get the idea the government can and should do more for the general betterment of things rather than just do whatever they can to enrich cronies.

I completely agree, but sadly there are a lot of people that are fooled by this particular rand of snake oil
