Correct, 38 year old Giordano has to be the one exposed. It's the GM's job to make sure they don't take him.

I don't really see any reason for the Flames to give up any assets to prevent Seattle from taking Giordano. Bigger picture, what do they really gain from doing that?
Gio is a great leader and has been a big part of this organization for many years. At some point, though, it's time to move on. Boston did it with Chara... it's probably time for Calgary to do the same.

What do you think Gio would have gotten at the deadline this year if he was an expiring contract?

I'd assume 2nd to 4th round pick and a prospect. Any team that wants to make a run in the playoffs would love Gio as a top 4 defenceman.

Have to ask whether Gio is worth more to Calgary than Seattle. And if so, why?
They can trade him at the deadline just like we could. Arguably they would be more likely to do that.

You're gonna have to lose somebody for nothing.
Giving up assets to not lose the final year of Giordano's contract seems pointless to me. If it really comes to it, trade Giordano before the Expansion Draft for some valuable picks and lose Kylington for free.
But—make sure the picks you get for Giordano are worth more than Kylington.

I’d imagine it is a small number of teams that would be in a position to protect Gio. Would be a very narrow trade market.

That seems low considering savard got a 1st and 3rd. Gio currently is several leagues above what savard is. On pace for 15 goals and 40 points. Gio's Ufa deadline price starts at a first and that is the case even if there is notable decline next year.
So what is that worth to the flames?
For me it comes down to how much would it take to protect him. I wouldn't make him one of the 3 protected Ds, but it's downright silly to say that no asset should be given, no matter how low, to protect the captain. A third is very low risk, for instance, with huge upside for not only asset management but the competitiveness of the team next year as well.

Why would Seattle do this? If his deadline value is at least a first, why are they accepting a third not to draft him?

The off season trade market right before the expansion draft will be soft. Eric Engels soft.
The market for a guy like Gio on next year's trade deadline will be red hot.

I guess if you get the impression that they want too much to protect Gio then you give them the impression that you're using one of your spots to protect him anyways. Then it becomes a shell game and maybe Seattle would just prefer the certainty of a third and say kylington or Phillips.
Anyhow, the third is only a hypothetical price. My point is that refusing to give up any asset because you're not in the position to do so is a silly stance.

Three things:
1) Giordano has a NTC
2) Looks bad to trade your captain for picks
3) Sutter loves him

If Gio stays, we hold onto a declining asset for another year who will still put up a modest point total that can be flipped at the deadline. If he's taken we get a boatload of cap space for the entire year. I would be strongly against using a pick to dissuade Seattle from taking Gio.

1) NTC doesn't mean anything for the expansion draft, you're thinking of a NMC
2) There is zero reason to do anything for optics, we need to be 100 times smarter than that and not protect a declining asset
3) I sure hope Sutter doesn't like him enough to have a say in protecting forcing us to lose Andersson, Tanev or Hanifin.

His NTC allows him to be traded to 19 teams, so it's not much of an impediment.

That is why you potentially pay something small for them not to take him. If the Flames paid a 3rd people would freak out...until the day they trade him for a 1st

Losing Andersson's 4.5 wouldn't be the worse thing in the world
you could replace him and likely improve with that money IMO

He’s still very young. Who could you replace him with of a similar age and skillset without giving up assets?

Thing is I don't think he is all that great a player...he might improve, maybe not.
He was the weak link on the pair with Gio. Worst plus/minus of the entire dcore
