If I'm drowning, I would rather have someone that came in last vs not competing at all. When new lifeguarding standards came out a couple of years ago that required a timed 400 meter swim under 10 minutes, we lost quite a few guards with the city. Amazing how many were unfit enough that they couldn't manage 1:15's for 8x50's pace.
And then there's Surf Lifesaving! That's a whole other kettle of fish that I am in awe of and have great respect for

Most of my replies are in the off topic forum, so I guess I enjoy talking about whatever the topic *isn't*

That would be a regular/average fitness time? I'm not a regular swimmer but I think I could swim 400m in 10 or less minutes. Because that's what I usually do, 4 laps take a little break and do it again.

Do you swim in a 100m pool? Most pools are 25m, so 4 laps would only be 100m total. 16 laps in 10 minutes seems like a pretty good pace to me.

Anything that highlights my own brilliance.

I’d say that such a list is a long one, but it certainly isn’t.

More realistically, I enjoy talking about the basics of personal finance and taxes with people, mostly to help them learn and hopefully escape corporate life earlier than they might otherwise. The key though is to not be preachy and to never judge. Or brag about your own situation. Better to just let people approach you and ask questions on their own schedule.

The Calgary Flames teams from the 80s
The Blue Jays teams up to the mid 90s (I can talk for days about their World Series years)

Yeah okay, that's what I wasn't sure about cause I thought the typical lanes were 50m.

I like talking about fitness among other things and that's why that post peeked my interest and the standard being used for lifeguards.

Their culture specifically? Or gang culture in general? I find the Italian mob families and their history fascinating and could talk and listen to those stories forever.

Biker gang culture specifically though broadly sourcing any sub culture interests me
Italian mob families isn’t something I’ve dug into but probably would enjoy too

Some are definitely 50m, which is Olympic length. 25m is more common. I guess 4 laps of a 50m pool is 400m if you count to the end and back as one lap.

I swim regularly (although not during covid) and am pretty confident I couldn't meet that standard.

Although you may be close to the timing for distance these are lifeguards that theoretically swim often and should have really decent technique and muscular endurance. Someone with excellent technique doesn’t have to be as fit to meet the mark. Pre CoVid just swimming 1-2x weekly for 20-30mins each time over a few months (plus other workouts and cardio) was enough to keep that pace up for me.

Any chance you could elaborate a little bit? Genuinely interested.
