I think it was the Maury episode with Michal Neuvirth where Radko Gudas was brought out after waiting backstage with a baseball bat.

Montreal? Yeah, they've got nothing.

The G is a position of weakness for sure, but the Leafs defense is as good as any team in the Canadian division.
Brodie has really allowed that club to slot everyone properly. No idea how deep the D goes but if healthy they are a really good group.
They unquestionably the team to beat. Doesn't mean they can't be but for sure they will be favorites for good reason.

It's thinking that this team is horrible and that they should concentrate on gutting the team for draft picks and prospects that I don't agree with.
What they need to do is figure out which players no longer fit in and replace them with players who they think will. Whether that's through trades or free agency.

Need to acquire the right players that fit the right spots; Scouts to do a better job when it comes to evaluating players that fit the team. This season was a wake up call that this team can use some improvements.

Seriously, how many times have the Flames gone on a big run and missed by a couple of points? That number has be well over twenty to make this statement accurate.

Yeah, thank Jesus.
Just need Matthew to get with the program (although he's shown flashes).

Maybe Sutter needs to put Poligrip in his mouth guard until he starts playing up to his potential.

My buddy who is a huge Leafs fan and also a pretty astute hockey fan in general, would much rather the Leafs face the Habs than the Flames.

The Flames, IMO, have no real pattern of missing the POs. They’ve. Missed by being pretty bad, under Hartley and Gilbert. They’ve missed in a sort of middling way under both B. Sutters and GG.
Their bigger pattern is probably getting in and losing in round one, no matter how high they finish.

Given that the Flames played the Leafs close in I think every game this season as well as shut down Matthews rather effectively, yeah I'd like their odds.
Habs getting in would be pretty close to an automatic one and done

The biggest issue if they get in will be how tired Markstrom will be to get them there, with no adequate backup. Hanifin is concerning too.

Who would've thought, the tough, puck retrieving player Johnny Gaudreau needed on his line would be Andrew Mangiapane.
seriously though. I love the way Mangiapane plays the game and that play against Petry to set up Johnny was pure brilliance on his part.

So, whatever this team’s problems are in the long run, Jacob Markstrom isn’t one of them.
First goal against, Markstrom made three saves before the Habs put #4 past him.
Second goal, Corey Perry makes a world-class play to Toffoli.
(Markstrom still almost caught it)
Monahan looks much more relaxed now that he’s away from 13 - looked like an actual hockey player last night.
It’s not about this year, but the playoff March continues.

What does one game have to do with Jacob Markstrom not being a problem in the long run?
What matters in the long run is his old age, his high cap hit, his very long term, his injury history, and hic NCM.
Markstrom could've won a Vezina this year and I still would have been concerned about the last 3 years of the contract.

Their schedule to finish is sparse with plenty of break days. Would be no worse than in a normal year if he was the defacto starter.

Markstrom is 31.
Goalies play into their mid-late 30s all the time at a high level. Mike Smith is dragging the Oilers to the playoffs at 39, and was our best player a couple years ago. Age isn’t a problem.
For the year, he’s at 2.75 and .903. For his career, he’s a 2.80/.910 goalie. Take away a few of the awful Edmonton games and he’s probably right on his career average. Worth noting as well, that Markstrom has never once played on what we might call a good team - The Canucks last year are about as credible as the 14-15 Flames.
His injury history is no more concerning than anyone else’s- the guy started 60 games two of the last three years, and would’ve started more for us if he hadn’t willingly thrown himself into a head on collision.
His cap hit is $6M - not cheap, but not a problem. We won’t be in a flat cap
Forever. And his contract isn’t even that bad - it’s less money and less term for a UFA starting goalie than the Habs paid for RFA Josh Anderson. I know who I’d rather have.
The NMC... who cares. This franchise has developed exactly one goalie since Trevor Kidd, and they just traded him to Toronto. I’m confident that 5 years from now, we will have exactly 0 better options than Marky.
I don’t expect Kiprusoff. I expect 2.65-2.85, and .905-.915 year in year out, with the maybe one .920 season mixed in, along with the ability to elevate his game in the post season. I haven’t seen anything from him that I wouldn’t write off to a new team or a bad team.
He’s the reason we won the last two games, and he’s going to win a lot of games for this team over the life of his deal.

Well, then. You worry too much.
Markstrom carries the #10 highest cap-hit of all goalies in the NHL. Between 2018–20 he was one of only ten goalies to start in 100 games, and of that group he ranks #3 in SP and #5 in GAA. I tend to think his performance this year has been largely the product of adjusting to a new team: he has posted the worst SP of his entire career since he became a starter. He was fantastic from the start, then struggled after coming back from injury, and then took time adjusting to a new system in which he sees A LOT fewer quality chances than he has at any point of his NHL career. In his three years as a starter in Vancouver he was facing an average of 32 SOG/GP; in Calgary he is facing only 25.
Markstrom only just turned 31-years-old, and insofar as goalies are concerned is still not anywhere close to worrying about his age. The Edmonton Oilers are starting a 39-year-old; Vegas, a 36-year-old; Dallas, a soon-to-be 34-year-old; NYI, a soon-to-be 33-year-old.
