If the Flames somehow win the next 2 against the Habs. And the rest of the games were decided by a coin toss, my paper napkin math has us with a 45 percent chance to make the playoffs is that accurate?

Habs have Toronto 4x, Oilers 2x, jets 1x and the sens 2x.Tough schedule and oil and jets should be playing hard jockeying for position.

We gotta win our 2 against them and probably win 5-6 of the other 8 and hope Montreal only wins 3-4 of last 9

Combo of flames wins and mtl losses for their number
Mtl wins and flames losses for flames elimination number.

Basically if we win the next 2 we’re essentially even. Lose 1 or 2 and we’re done.

One overtime game and your numbers are out the window aren’t they?

If we win the next two, we just need two more points than the Habs get over the remaining games, and no worse than tied with them in regulation wins.

Quite doable.

But there's also the Canucks to worry about, who have a boatload of games in hand. The Flames will have to win minimum 3 of the 4 head to head meetings with them, maybe all 4.

Indeed, my post assumes taking most or all of the Vancouver games keeping them out of the mix. I think it would take an epic losing streak by Montreal for us to be close and then Van coming over the top.

Canucks have a better chance than the flames
 Overtime games will change things.

Bottom line is flames have no chance if they don’t win these two games against the habs unless the habs fall off a cliff

I’ve been drinking so maybe my logic is a little skewed, but this is how I see things.
The NHL insists on three point games, so the magic number should be in points, not in win/losses.

The Habs have 10 games left and have the possibility of earning 69 points. The flames currently have 45 points and own the tie breaker. That would make the Flames magic (points) number 24. A flames win brings the number down by 2, a Habs loss brings the number down by 2. 6 flames wins and 6 Habs losses, would put the flames tied in points with the Habs and eliminate them from contention. This is entirely possible.

The Canucks have the possibility of earning 71 points, making the flames magic (points) number 26 (assuming we have the tie breaker). So 6 flames wins and 7 Canucks losses puts us in the playoffs.

The flames need 6 or 7 wins and a little help to make the playoffs. Then stun the leafs and lap up the salty tears of the CBC/Sportsnet producers.

The Flames last 4 games are against the Canucks, those could be huge games if the Flames are still in the mix.
