You could easily trade Backlund retained IMO

not sure why people want to give away players...probably the same posters that will then post every time he scores a goal, almost gets an assist, or draws a penalty for another team.

Do everything you can to leave Seattle with nothing

Retained equals dead cap space for 3 seasons

I personally have no problem if they expose any over 30 year old player. I don’t really see a player that is worth protecting over Backlund right now but would quickly move on and take the positives if he was claimed.

If Gio gets claimed all of a sudden the Flames have an additional 6.75M in cap space. Does Gaudreau’s trwde value increase now that the Flames could take $10M in salary back?

The only way o get behind them paying to keep Gio is if Seattle takes Lucic. Create that cap flexibility because at the end of the day Gio is far more valuable to the team than Looch.

I will be incredibly pissed of Seattle takes Kylington and we find out the Flames sent a pick so they did that

I can’t see the Kracken taking Gio over Backlund. There will be a lot of quality dmen available, and very few top 6 centres. Backlund would immediately become their #1 or #2 center. In their draft, the Knights top centre had scored 51 pts and second had 25 pts the previous season.

As of right now I do not really see how Backlund is exposed unless Philips or Gawdin are called up and go point per game or better in the last 10 games

There is no way this ownership group/Sutter go the rebuild route. Therefore, Backlund and Giordano will be kept, whatever the cost. Unless STH's get a letter in the mail telling them we are entering a rebuild, I am assuming the drive for 8th will be on as always. Obviously, they will try some wizardry with changing out the bodies, but i would be stunned if we were purely selling...

The cost of keeping Backlund is exposing Gawdin who won’t be claimed so the cost is nothing

The cost of keeping Gio is either losing someone playing better for cheaper (Tanev) or someone younger and cheaper who hasn’t reached their ceiling (Rasmus and Hanifin)

I think it’s very likely they expose Gio and I think Seattle maybe even claims him and flips him half retained for a nice return

Cost, as in I would not be surprised that we pay Seattle to leave Giordano alone.

It would be sad if they lose Valimaki for nothing if he was the sticking point for even a Mark Stone rental. I’m not trying to second guess history, Valimaki’s stock has dropped due to injury and play.

I hope your wrong. We need the cap savings and shouldn’t waste it on a 38 yr old. Let the Kracken sell him trade deadline and let him have a chance to win a cup! ala Bourque!

It depends what the Flames intend to do with the cap...also, let's not assume Seattle isn't a playoff team as these expansion rules are pretty nice for them.

These placements are all based on my own opinion, of course. Essentially, this is about how much are we paying for what we are using vs where they should be used.

Cost
T6: Paid to play on the first or second line.
M6: Paid to play on the third line and fill in on the second line.
B6: Paid to play on the third or fourth line.

Use
T6: Has played multiple games on the first or second line.
M6: Hasn't played below the third line.
B6: Hasn't played above the third line.

Actual
T6: Shouldn't be playing below the second line.
M6: Should play on the third line and fill in on the second line.
B6: Shouldn't play above the third line.

Summary
Note that these are all based on this season, and therefore neither future potential nor past accomplishments are factored in.

Value Add (Cost is below Use and Use is equal to or below Actual.)
Lindholm
Mangiapane

Even (Cost, Use and Actual are all equal.)
Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Nordstrom

Talent:Use Detriment (Use is above Actual.)
Lucic
Dube
Leivo
Rinaldo
Ritchie
Robinson
Ruzicka
Simon

Cost Detriment (Cost is above Use, but Use is equal to Actual)
Backlund
Ryan

Edit: I made a mistake with Backlund, his Actual should be M6. He and Ryan should be in their own category, where their Talent to Use comparison is fine, but they cost too much.

Everyone is so negative in here about some players.

Not saying it’s not somewhat deserved but knocking on Valimaki and Andersson is kinda unmerited.

Take a look at most good current defenceman and most have had growing pains.

If I'm Lucic I'm hoping the Kracken pick me. Only shot at playing on a contender. Plus closer to his hometown.

Even if we retool it should begin with Backlund and Gio.

I am curious to know what sorts of players some posters imagine will be left available to Seattle to select in expansion that will prompt them to pass over Mikael Backlund. If exposed, he will very likely be one of the very top forwards available, and Seattle will still need to meet the salary floor; they will need to select a few higher-cap players with term.

If Backlund is exposed the Flames will lose him and will be worse off for it.
