I love when people who clearly don’t watch or follow the Flames try to write about the Flames.
I’m all for exposing Backlund but I highly doubt it will be because Gawdin gets protected.

But yeah, I think it would be better to protect Backlund, so if anything you can trade him and get assets in return. He has more value than Gawdin does.

Flat cap world - I don’t think you can trade Backlund anywhere without retaining 50% salary.

They won't take Backlund if they have the chance and if they did, it's one less contract that isn't aging well

The only way they should expose Backlund over Gawdin is if they know for sure the Seattle is going to claim him. Otherwise you just end up with a digruntled vet that is hard to trade and has 3 years left.

No they dont.
At this point Gawdin is a tweener and Philipps is the tiniest guy in pro hockey possibly.
Seattle wont be looking at either one.

My prediction is they protect Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube, Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev and Markstrom, and then use some of their excess picks to get Seattle to not take Gio

After this year Lucic would be #1 on my protection list. Would have to make a deal though to not have to leave an asset exposed.

True, but you could still get something at least out of a depreciating asset.
Backlund is the kind of player where I think exposing him doesn't pose a risk of him being taken anyway since I don't think any team is gonna have much interest in him due to his age and contract. He's not an impactful enough player for Seattle to use up that much cap for. So he'll likely not be selected, and should be traded if there's interest.

If he takes a big pay cut, sure.
If not, expose away. Glad he is obliging.
Doubt he gets claimed though.

Call me crazy, but I don't think it's too much of a long shot that Lucic gets picked. Honestly, none of the players that the Flames are likely to expose are "must haves". As fans, we get so attached to players, but objectively speaking, I don't think Seattle is licking their chops looking at what the Flames will be offering. After this season, his his salary for the next couple of seasons is lower than his cap hit and his NMC becomes a M-NTC next year, so there is the potential that they could trade him at some point over the next couple of seasons.
It all depends on who other teams are making available, but they are probably going to pick at least one or two leadership veterans and the salary cap ceiling won't be an issue for them for a couple of seasons.
For sure it's a long shot and not likely, but I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility any more considering that he is now relatively effective in his role.

Giving up picks/prospects to protect Gio would be incredibly stupid I feel. Flames need to be thinking long term, and cannot be holding on to depreciating older assets while sacrificing pieces that could bring in future young players. If Seattle wants to take him, I say you let them.

I want him to stay a Flame. He’s the kind of player we need on this team.

I agree with you. I say he's most likely to be picked based on what you said. This season has shown that Lucic does still can be an effective player, and his experience/pedigree being a Stanley Cup champion can be something Kranken are interested in having in the locker room. It's too bad Lucic presence wasn't good enough to make the Flames core play a lot better the past two years.
