He kind of sewered the D tonight. It wasn’t all on them. Sure, there were 2 obvious turnovers by Valimaki and Hanifin that lead directly to goals, but Ottawa’s pressure on the PK and on the forecheck naturally forces turnovers. Honestly, it comes down to the offense, Ottawa gives up more goals than any other team in the league, yet for whatever ####ing reason, the Flames can’t seem to score more than 1 or 2 goals against them most nights.

A winger can only cut to the middle going east-west if he has the time or space to do. With Lindholm cutting through the middle, he takes defenders with him and thus opens up space for Gaudreau to make a hard cut towards the center. Monahan hasn’t done that for Gaudreau very much this season. So it’s been a double or triple team that he’s faced most of this season.
I don’t think anyone should be throwing shade at this line right now either, they’re the only reason the Flames are scoring at all. They look dangerous off the rush while every other line is just firing point shots hoping it’ll bounce off something and in.
|
He did it because he forgot he forgot he could get hurt. I dunno. He used to do it between defenders. Now he avoids it like the plague.
Monahan looked way more dangerous than Gaudreau. He for sure distributed the puck better. And that isn’t saying he looked dangerous.

The problem he’s got is he can’t come down on them hard because they’re too mentally fragile. Gotta play the long game. He will get results but it is going to take about 6-8 months.
Too mentally weak.

Looking at Tkachuk’s body of work this season, is it crazy to think we’re better off just letting him walk for free to avoid paying him $9 M/season next year?
His failed rush with the net empty tonight really summed up what I see; mainly that he wants to be a leader and put the team on his shoulders but in the end is kind of a weak link who coughs up the puck, does a half hearted attempt to atone the loss, and watches the backbreaking goal from his stomach as if he just gave 110% with nothing left to give. I don’t know, he was supposed to be a key piece in the core...just disappointing.

Not crazy at all. Crazy is signing him for $9mm. Cap space would be more valuable.

Well, I was believing that this team could make it in. They had a really huge opportunity to make up some ground here, but failed.
I don't know what it is about Ottawa, but they just have the Flames' number. Maybe it is a Tkachuk-vs-Tkachuk thing, maybe it is just about playstyle, or maybe it is just that the Flames suck against hard-working teams that skate.
For the rest of the season - win or lose - I am trying to see which players 'get it' under Darryl, and which don't. Most players I do think are coming around. I can't even imagine what this off-season will bring.

Come on it would be INSANE to let him walk for nothing...trading him is a different story

That's it for me. The Flames don't want to work too hard to win, they want to win on their terms. So when another team is taking the play to them they just shrink and pack it in.
They're an extremely easy team to play against. No push back, not physical, can't score, don't care.

Sutter came in and proved to Treliving that we have a core problem. Maybe now Treliving will stop tinkering with the forwards and make some major changes to the core.

Forgive my ignorance, but would another team who has traded for Tkachuk not also have to offer him minimum $9m?

Ottawa for all intents and purposes are the plucky Flames at the beginning of the Monahan era. Working their butts off, fun to watch, young, doing everything each individual can to not only keep their job but also earn a long term contract down the road.
We were like the Sens once. Full of promise for the future.
Well, the kids got paid, and then got soft. What do you do?

For sure you try and trade. But, I do think you need to hit pause on signing that contract and give it some real deep thought.

Would you like it if Treliving traded a significant piece for a guy thag is playing to the level of MT? A player that needed a 9M offer just to qualify?
Guy is a gamble right now.

If the Flames traded him as an RFA...or they could negotiate a long term deal.
I'm certain teams would trade for him, no chance you let him walk. Not the first time a player had a bad season. Even then its 30 points in 44 games for a team that doesn't score.

There is something between significant and letting him walk though...some pretty extreme takes. I'm sure teams would give him 7 on a long term and he would probably take it depending on where. St. Louis, Ottawa, Columbus, ect.

That’s because coaching doesn’t actually make as big of a difference as some like to believe it does. All the bargain bin/elite coaching rhetoric that went through CP for years and yet, Darryl’s coaching bump might be the worst of all the coaches. Ward at least had a 7 game winning streak en route to a playoff appearance, Bill Peter’s 50 win season and Gulutzan’s 1st year playoff berth.
That’s not to say Darryl is a bad coach. The guy has 2 Stanley Cup rings for a reason. But perhaps, team success is a lot more complicated than just the overly simplistic 1 + 1 = 2 kind of stuff.

I didn’t hear it but that sure sounds like painted criticism you dot often hear from the coach in public.
The PP was absolutely slow and lazy.
The skill guys are killing them.

Would you rather Ward was still coaching this team?

If it takes a coach to tell a GM the players the GM brought in are no good then than GM is terrible.
