So when the team was struggling, it was because Sutter was doing a worse job than Ward. But now they they're winning some games, it's because the players have figured things out and doesn't have anything to do with Sutter. Got it.
*groan*
If you really want to rehash old posts, what I said was that we owed Ward an apology because he did pretty well considering the habits of the players. I never said anything about Sutter doing worse (although there were major struggles with goal scoring at first that were concerning).
It has something to do with coaching, but I think it's about a different message or style making an impression. They haven't changed their style dramatically. Defending better, making smarter plays when they have the puck, that's about it.
What it is to me is that the players are realizing that they underperformed all year and are finally deciding to listen to a coach, rather than tune them out.
Sutter gets credit, but the players play the game. No coach can get on the ice and score goals or defend. They're just playing a little more cohesively...finally. It took Sutter several weeks and an extra week of pure practice time to get through to them, but it's still on them to respond to the message.
I'm just thankful they have.
Now...can we move on?

When the team was struggling under Ward, they were flat out playing disjointed hockey with horrid systems play and zero structure.
When the team was struggling under Sutter, they had some of the worst PDO in the NHL. Shooting percentage and save percentage. Of course Sutter made some mistakes - the Gio-Andersson pair and the Gaudreau-Monahan-Ritchie line - which I'm sure he'd like a mulligan on, but the team was playing with structure and attention to detail in those losses.

In the Ward era this year there would be trepidation by the team in the third, happy to be in the lead. Flames dominated that game and deserved to be ahead by more then 1 before Leivo's goal, which itself was just honest to goodness hard work and persistence by the line, after the JG workto create a breakaway. But old Flames would've wilted and let in a pinball goal and lost that one in OT.
It's a fine line, and Flames deservedly were on the right side of a one goal game that turned into a 2 goal lead.

I’d be ok with that, if it meant the team showed some spirit in the home stretch.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

!@#$ing on players after they leave town is behaviour befitting Edmonton Oilers fans, not us.
I have not missed Sam Bennett doing Sam Bennett things. It's like every line now works without trying to jam Sam Bennett somewhere he doesn't work.
A lot of people #### on Sam Bennett before he left town, it's not a just cause he was traded thing, it's a Sam Bennett wasn't a very good player thing.
