5 of our next 6 games are against Montreal. The other is Ottawa.
Argh they always give me such hope!!
Difficult task, but
If you take those 5 then you reel MTL completely back to you.
That's what makes a 6 point gap this year very different from others. You can deal the team you're chasing losses combined with your own wins and cover ground quickly. Other years that team has a lot more control picking up points against other teams and playing you a lot less.
CGY need only play them exactly how they have this year already, which has been arguably their best hockey.
That was a nice win. Congrats to Lucic on 1000 games. That was actually one of the better games I've seen a player play on their actual 1000th game. He's been one of the few bright spots this season. Never thought I'd say something like that after he got traded here. But that trade looks more like a win as time goes on.
Sick move by Johnny to win it. Wife wasn't happy how I started screaming like a banshee but these days gotta take celebrate when a nice goal like that happens .

I'd rather that than tanking. This team needs to learn how to win and Sutter needs to do the leading in getting them there. Better for him to build a winning culture and screw the draft pick position.
My opinion on cheering for tanking/wins is that none of us will ever have any influence over the results of games, so what we hope for or don't hope for has no bearing on the result. If someone wants to cheer for losses but the team wins their way to the 15th pick, than who cares. Cheering or jeering has no influence on what happens so people can do what they want and have to deal with the result.
I cheered hard when Gaudreau scored and I loved every second of it. That's why I watch Flames' hockey; for moments like that. While they have been few and far in between this season, I enjoy it when it happens.
My hope and dream is the Flames' have 'figured it out' under Sutter and go on a good run. I've never been a fan of the "get to the playoffs and anything can happen" mentality. But if there is ONE single coach in NHL history who can actually put it off, it's D. Sutter. I still think they are out of it, but good to at least build a foundation for next season and get those players who are staying, get them used to it.

It's kinda his thing. He won 2 cups on that( technically should be 3) . La was down in round 1 and 2 3-1 their first cup win after seeding 8th. I know it is so unlikely the Flames get in but this coach has a history of just getting in so who knows. I'm happy they just got a real coach. The time he was first hired to the end of this season was IMO a feeling out process for the offseason work that needs to get done.
Weird how Matthews is on 60+ goal regular season pace against the other Canadian teams but the Flames have largely held him in check. It seems the Flames have had more trouble with the Leafs bottom 6. Also that Tavares contract isn't looking so hot.

Matthews had not scored a goal against the Flames until this season and were the last NHL team he scored on

Yes, because our middling draft picks have worked so well for us over the past couple decades. Building that “winning culture” has proven to get us over the top. Top-end talent be darned!
Whether we draft 5th or 15th, it isn't going to make that much of a difference. They aren't tanking on purpose. I guess we'll see where they end up, after actually trying.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Given the less-known/underwhelming nature of this draft
I'll take a month of meaningful hockey should they make a run.

Just caught the highlights of the game! Nice little W. Funny how we have played some really competitive games against the Leafs this year. Just so many let downs against much worse teams.

Agrred.
I cheer for wins, I'm just not as disappointed with a loss.
But I couldn't imagine watching and actually hoping they lose. Now if it's the last game of the season, and it make a big difference, in standings I could see myself doing it.

Merely flipping their record vs the Sens puts them head and head with MTL for the post season.
Really too bad they did themselves less than no favors.
Easily avoidable predicament with less self pity and bit more engagement.
All you can do now is put the season so far in the shredder and rectify it in the final stretch with the kind of hockey you should've been playing with this roster.
Overall they have been better since changing the lines - I'd personally say it's actually the better balance in the d-pairs that's making the bigger difference though.
Gio-Anderson just didn't work and it was cratering this team. Much better balance in the top 4 now though.
The forward lines have been more of a mixed bag:
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk: 36.7% xGF, 45% Offensive Zone
Mangiapane-Monahan-Dube: 60.2% xGF, 50% Offensive Zone
Lucic - Backlund - Nordstrom: 62.9% xGF, 21% Offensive Zone
Ryan - Ritchie - Leivo: 62.6% xGF, 57% Offensive Zone
So as much as the narrative has been "Gaudreau is back" away from Monahan it's not necessarily the case.
That line has been outshot, and heavily out chanced at 5v5, and I'd say Gaudreau looks the same as he did with Monahan. Personally I think Monahan looks better with Mangiapane and Dube than he did with Johnny though.
