Derek Ryan was born in Spokane WA and played for the Chiefs. It's pretty close to the Engelland situation.

Real sad to see both go, but we all wanted Tre to load up on picks especially in the first 3 rounds and he did, so am fairly pleased about the haul.

Tkachuk must be pretty beat up about this.

Sam is one of his best friends and he is also pretty close to Ritter.

I'm sure there will be some sad guys in the locker room but it's part of the business and the reality is that if Matthew and a handful of other players played better, these trades over the past 24 hours wouldn't have happened.

Tkachuk can go too for all I care, as long as it makes the Flames better now or in the future.

Sell every year until the Connor Bedard draft. Then spend every single pick/player/prospect to get the 1st OA. Profit.

What's so hard to understand?

Didn't you just post in another thread about always cheer for the logo on the front of the jersey before the name plate on the back?

If it makes the Flames better, any player can go.

Ryan is a good centreman but he doesn't have the grit those guys you mentioned have and he is on the small size. Size and grit matter in the playoffs especially in the bottom 6. Throw in the cap hit and I'm not surprised Treliving couldn't find a taker.

I agree with those who think Ryan could be back, but I think he'd be a plan B for the 4th line centre spot. I think Flames might go after Brandon Sutter for that spot in the Summer; he's kind of the ideal 3rd / 4th line centre under a Sutter team.

We'll also see how Ruzicka does in his audition here. Darryl loves big centres so if Ruzicka shows well, he could be the 4th line centre next season.

No kidding. “Better now or in the future” was the quote. Sign me up.

Maybe there’s a handful of players who transcend loyalty to the team because of their long term impact to the club and community.

But that’s definitely not Matthew Tkachuk.

You can’t be shocked there was no market for a guy who had seen waivers twice and lots of depth forwards on the market.

I could see him re-signing for a cheap one year contract but maybe not if Flames did really try hard to move him.

OK....but how are you going to make the Flames better moving a 23 yo who is top 50 in the entire league in offense since he entered it?

And it has nothing to do with his name....everything to do with the player.

I'm surprised... flames showed they were willing to eat money. Ryan is exactly the kind of player you've seen PO contenders pick up in the past and 50% retained he should have had value. If other GMs weren't willing to give up a pick for him, not much the flames could do but the other teams' loss.

Even at half retained 1.6M is a lot of money for a 4th line center

And a lot of teams probably just haven't seen much of Ryan this year, in which he's been very good, but hurt for half of it. And his plain numbers aren't jaw dropping. He's one of those guys you kind of have to watch to appreciate.

I would like to say that I'm happy or upset about today's moves. The reality is that this is least I have ever cared about a trade deadline. I don't know if it's the team's performance, covid, or whatever, but I have been following this team for my entire life, and this is the first time where I just don't care. Hopefully not a trend...

Really? I think this was an interesting deadline from a Flames perspective, since we traded 2 very popular players

This is the thing that kills me.

Ryan, Stone, Brouwer, Hamonic - whether it was because they were incorrectly pegged as players who can player higher in the line-up (Brouwer, Hamonic) or just role players (Ryan, Stone), this organization needs to stop sinking money into these roles and expecting to be successful.

The bottom of the line-up should not be loaded with over-paid veterans.
