My god, am I the only one frustrated by the complete lack of any physicality from Ryan? You play in the bottom six, throw a goddamn hit once in a while. or at the very least pin a guy against the boards.
Yes, you are.

Complaining about one of the most useful players the Flames have had in years is mind bottling. He can play up and down the lineup and is one of the only Flames that makes anyone he plays with, better.

This was more activity than I expected. Still a lot of work needed in the offseason. Not much else to say on the 2021 season as it winds down.

Pretty happy with the results. Two players that needed changes of scenery got just that and the Flames stockpiled some draft picks to fill their empty prospect cupboards.

A lot of people are unable to appreciate what a really good defensive forward can do for a team.

My biggest complaint is he is too expensive and too soft, and at his age and given where the team is at in the standings, he is nothing but a roadblock for our young prospects to be getting in the lineup and getting meaningful NHL games down the stretch this year. Not trading him is doing a disservice to our prospect development and represents ice time that could otehrwise be given to a phillips, ruzicka, gawdin, etc. to see what we have, but instead we will continue to roll with a 34 year old.

None of those prospects can handle either the role he plays, nor the competition he faces.

He's blocking no one.

How do we know that without seeing it?

I would guess the coaches are pretty sure what they are capable of at this time.

No one in the organization is currently banging down the doors. So why rush them?

Would be just more poor development.

Too soon to see if we'll keep rolling with him, and that cap hit wasn't super tradeable.

This was definitely a bigger asset haul overall than I expected, though it was two higher value players leaving.

I echo the sentiment that Ryan still being a Flame is a bit surprising. Would have thought that some team out there would have wanted a bit of depth down the middle, especially one that does a good job on the PK and at face-offs. If I am a GM looking to make some noise, this is the type of depth move I look to make in addition to picking up a depth defencemen or two if needed.

Believe Calgary tried hard to move pending UFA Derek Ryan, but market wasn’t there. #Flames

Ryan isn't blocking the kids. His linemates arguably are, though Ryan with Nordstrom and Bennett was pretty darn effective.

IMO the disservice would be icing a line of just kids, especially on an underperforming team. Ryan is a guy they should have around BECAUSE kids are coming up. He's got a lot to show them about defensive hockey (which is what minor leaguers often lack) and how to stay in a lineup.

The flat cap probably made even a retained Ryan a little expensive for your depth/4th line. But I think he's been underrated by the league and would be really good in the right situation.

Was thinking the same.

And when the discussions started and the fit became clear they decided to give the young family guy a break and just hold on to him.

You mean this amazing player who every team would want to have in their lineup wasn't garnering any interest from any of the other 30 teams?!?

But he's just an incredible player and the flames are lucky to have him and he is great value on his contract....

Kinda makes my point if there was no interest as he is overpaid for what he provides.

That's a pretty bad take in my mind.

Ranks for Calgary forwards this year 5 on 5

CF% 1st
xGF% 4th
HD Splits 1st
Off Zone Face offs ... last
Face offs ... first

Calgary wouldn't be in this situation with more Derek Ryans

Honestly other teams should have taken a flyer on Ryan.

If you could have gotten him for a 3rd round pick that would have been a great move. He's the type of guy that could really solidify your 4th line which is so important in the playoffs.

Said in the Bennett thread, but picking up a 2nd, 3rd, and prospect for Rittich and Bennett is pretty solid asset management.

Not a fan of Tre these days, but think he's had a decent 24 hours.

I would happily bring Ryan back next year -- especially if we're looking to promote some forwards from Stockton. He would be a good fit for Seattle though.

P.S. He's not young -- DR turned 34 in December. Low mileage though.
