This is ridiculous.
Had the Oilers won, the narrative from them would have been how they were inspired, and more motivated than ever to get the W for their fallen teammate.

Is the team rebuilding (Gio, Johnny, Monahan traded for futures in the summer?)? If so, I could see an argument for qualifying Bennett and playing him as a centre next season. We need bodies, and perhaps he’d be worth more next trade deadline than this one simply if he’s getting played more (seems unlikely he’d be worth less than the pennies on the dollar he’s worth this one, and he could help us lose next year).

If the team isn’t rebuilding...well, we’re screwed anyways, so what does it matter?

So...if he stays another year, do you realistically believe he would be a .5 ppg guy?

And no...there is no argument for qualifying Bennett at 2.5 million a year...none.

The team is not rebuilding....i think that much is painfully obvious. It doesnt mean there wont e changes. One, maybe 2 core guys and 3 or 4 of the rest.

I have no doubt that had the Oilers won (as most probably expected given both teams' recent performances/records to be honest), this game would have been added to the canon of teams/players "overcoming personal tragedy".

Again, rightly or wrongly, that's just how the stories get written. McDavid handled this *very* poorly.

He’s not been impressed by fancy plays, especially when they end up in turn overs at the offensive blue line.

I bet it’s Gaudreau that gets traded unless he magically starts playing defence and protects the puck more.

You guys are Eric Francis level terrible.

The team won 5-0 and got goals (and good games) from both Monahan & Gaudreau. Somehow you still took Sutter's comments as an attack on Gaudreau??

I'm sure Gaudreau's fancy goal really bothered Sutter. And his fancy one touch pass to Lindholm for his goal.

I'm guessing Sutter is ok to be happy with both players playing well and doesn't feel the need to pick a camp each game.

He's been even better this year than last too, you're definitely not wrong. Quality third line grinder with some offensive flair that gives his all nearly every night.

Lucic played well, and that was game 999

Next game is his 1000th, it’ll be great to see him hit that milestone and get the silver stick

Yeah it's Sutter so you have to be careful not to read too much in.

He mentioned Monahan favourably for sure ... then mentioned the first line by number only, and only gave 28 a kudos for being a good player and getting the other two going.

So yeah there's something there if want to see it.

Can't blame anyone for thinking he doesn't like Gaudreau and Tkachuk's game at the moment.

But with Sutter it's never black and white.

If you play 200', regardless of offensive production or stats, you will be good in his books.

I think Monahan has done really well in that department under Sutter which is why he was singled out.........JG not so much.

The day Sutter feels obligated to hand out a pat on the back to every player, for not having a terrible game, at the behest of the local media, is the day he finally does retire.

Gaudreau last night for the 1st half of the game was garbage, pure garbage. Then Monny scored the goal and I think the one upsmanship kicked in.

Then all of a sudden he started back checking a bit harder and zoned in on making decent plays. I watched Johnny specifically last night and I can think of one excellent back check in the 3rd period. It was vintage Johnny. But that felt like a glimpse into the past.

Regardless, if the Flames aren't doing anything tomorrow in regards to trades and we are riding and dying with this group for a 2ns year in a row, we better well see more of what we saw last night.

I'm still of the opinion the only player from the core the Flames should trade is Johnny. I think Monahan is the next Captain 9f this team once Gio rides off into the sunset.

It was pretty obvious to me watching that, that Sutter was very deliberately not giving Johnny any particular praise. When asked about the both of them, he made a point to give credit to Monahan for doing everything he’s been asked, and quite obviously avoided talking about Gaudreau.

Under Sutter he’s got 8 points in 15 games. He was our best player in the playoffs last year...there’s some reasons right there.

1 year at his qualifying number to keep the asset? I’m fine with that. What’s the alternative? Signing Josh Leivo again? I’m not confident in Treliving’s free agent work to actually improve the team - why would we believe Treliving could reasonable improve upon Bennett? He hasn’t shown this ability to date.

Imagine the outcry if you had a Colby Cave night and no NHL game? No 50/50, no telling the story and remembering him on a national broadcast.

Here is a fun list to peruse

https://www.capfriendly.com/cost-per...c/standardized

$/point for standard contracts, forwards, normalized for 82 games

Bennett’s 98 K per point put him just after Evander Kane and Artemi Panarin and before Brayden Point and Mathew Barzal. This while not seeing Bennett as a regular on the PP but now contributing in a regular role on the PK

He isn’t paid by his draft position and those initial expectations, for those who are still butt hurt by it.

I’m not even saying he has a good contract, but it is below NHL average of 3 M, and so far he seems to be responding positively to having an actual accomplished NHL coach.

There are arguments, I am sure. That’s what agents get paid for, not just flapping their gums when Idiotte calls them

I get they can be upset about the last-minute scheduling, but you’re a pro athlete making millions, where your job is to play. Your work called you in. Stop crying about it.

and i have 6 seasons worth of reasons that crushes small spurts of being good and suggests he is what he is.

So your argument to keep him and overpay is because he might not get improved upon next year?

If you qualify him for 1 year at an inflated salary...he walks as UFA after next year. Or trade him now, get something for him, and if he wants to return next year give him a 2 year deal at half of what he is making now after the season...the only other thing is the acquiring team QO's him at the 2.5 which is fine as well, just build in a condition into the trade.

It would be asinine to bring him back at his current level and he has never done anything to earn it.

Remember when the argument was "yeah but he is playoff beast mode Bennett, you have to keep him" and i argued then as i do now...you need guys that actually get you to the playoffs before they can help you in the playoffs. Of course it was response after response of mocking for that position on Bennett...but yet? Here we are.

Also the cap space earned by not going QO doesnt mean it has to be spent on a free agent. Right now the single most valuable asset in making deals in the NHL is the ability to take on more money than is moving out. It is not hard to improve a team when in that situation and why I believe Seattle will be good not right away, but within a couple years. They can turn what will surely be the most cap space in the league into all kinds of players that will help in a year or two.

Unless this team was going scorched earth which is not happening, then they need to capitalize on every asset they can right now to position themselves moving forward. Bennett is a minor asset but still one all the same.

I don't really wish to talk about Connor's comments from last night specifically as it seems disrespectful to Cave. However, there is a pattern here that makes it increasingly clear that he believes that he, and therefore, his team should be managed with some level of preferential treatment.

He's extremely unlikeable particularly compared to the last two generational players: Syd and AO.

I like Mangiapane and Dube on the same line. Could be a real forechecking and chance-creating buzzsaw of a line. Both are decent backcheckers and puck stealers too.

One would have to have a very high tolerance for seeing your guys fall down/get knocked down though

I don't really care about the millionaire part, everyone has a right to their feelings, and yeah I can see how (at least some) Oilers hated playing now...

but it's not like this season has a lot of wiggle room with the schedule, so why give the NHL s### about this stuff. Be a pro.
