...well, I mean uh...that’s like, your opinion, man.
I guess in hindsight it makes Edmonton look even worse. Pittsburgh turned that disastrous run (which spanned a full season lockout) into three Stanley Cups.
Goes to show just how poorly Edmonton was managed during that run. Always goes to show that draft year is a big deal, and that if you’re tanking you should be doing it with a purpose.
I wonder what teams will tank for Bedard/Michkov/Wright. I have to imagine there will be a good group face planting on purpose for their shot at them.
Detroit will be there. Will Ottawa be bad enough? Buffalo will be there, as will Anaheim but I feel New Jersey and LA will have built their rosters to the point where they won’t be there.

I’m up for a really decent tank attempt next year. This year is a warmup.

I don't even think tanking will be a choice. The team is terrible as it is and massive turnover doesn't usually have immediate dividends. If management was smart, they would go with it rather than fight it.

We’ve never done it. Sure we’ve tumbled down the standings through our own idiocy - but we’ve never done it on purpose and with a target in mind.
I’d love to see it. I just think the task of competing with the other top teams in the league over the next few years is an absolute pipe dream. 0% chance.
May as well shoot your shot to see if we can’t get a truly elite player or two. It’d be really cool to see this organization actually be “intellectually honest” with themselves and manage proactively. I also say this as a STH who would go to as many games as possible. Tanking? I’m in.

I’ve said all year the team just isn’t good enough (mainly in response to those who said the right coach would unlock the potential of the top line). And the surest way to get an elite player in this city is to draft one.

Yeah, there were some pretty obvious issues that weren't coaching issues. Too many one-dimensional players, too many soft players, and it doesn't seem like a tight group at all.
It all came together that one season under Peters, but losing a Norris caliber defenseman is pretty impactful. Ward/Sutter do not have that, or a single player in the league that is top 5 or even 10 in the positions. That combined with a bad room is hard for any coach to overcome.

Sutter is obviously a better coach than Ward, but, yeah, this team isn’t winning much as currently constructed.

Oh, don’t worry. Management assures me they’re the smartest in the whole room.

Which is why it was such a bad hire. When you're searching for someone update your house the last thing you want to do is hire someone who wants to tear down and complete rebuild the structure. This team is not built to play a Sutter game. This is a team that is built to play a speed transition game out in the open ice, NOT along the boards and playing smash mouth hockey. Treliving once again showing his incompetence. This team is screwed for the next decade because Treliving doesn't understand the very team he's built.

There is only one way to ensure a good tank - this summer it's balls to the wall for Taylor Hall!

But was it Treliving’s hire? 3-4 weeks ago the popular opinion seemed to be that it was the owners who hired Sutter, not Treliving.
Regardless, I’m sure it’s Treliving’s fault.

I want us to finish low enough to grab Beniers or Johnson this year, and then tank for Shane Wright next year.

This team as it is now isn't good enough to win #### all of importance. At least not without a hot goalie stealing a bunch of key games.
At the same time though, I don't think they are nearly as bad as this season would indicate either.
It's a really ####ty situation. A very off year but no key UFA's to sell off in order to load up on picks at least. If this would have happened last season they probably could have gotten at least a late first for Brodie and had another Zary level prospect in the system, maybe even more.
Plus with COVID and the flat cap, as well as all the core players underperforming, it makes it virtually impossible for Treliving to extract the proper value from trading any of them to shake up the core.
I don't envy Treliving at all right now. He hasn't been perfect by any means, but there is no way in hell this team should be as bad as it is right now, and the circumstances are making it nearly impossible for him to maneuver his way out of this mess successfully.

By many accounts, Treliving wanted to hire Darryl when Peters was let go but Darryl declined so Ward was given the interim position.

Draft and develop. Draft and develop. Draft and develop. Keep a conveyor belt of youth coming through and getting opportunities. Hire people that are great at those jobs. Not great? Replace them.
All UFAs who don’t want to re-sign should be traded. Retain 50% on every one. Create an auction.
Worried that we might need an expiring contract for the playoffs? Have a young player ready to go.
Young player not working out on the farm? Trade for more picks.
Invest in drafting and development.

This is a team that is suffering from a stretch of poor goaltending, low shooting %, and a complete lack of confidence. This team will likely not be this bad next year.
Markstrom bounces back and they play the Sutter style to a tee next season this team will be on the bubble and no where near the tank. This team is not as bad as people think and a far away from being as bad as they are in the standings.
For the tank attempt to happen they need to fire Sutter and trade Markstrom along with Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Monahan, Gio, Tanev, Backlund if they can get value and sign some garbage UFA’s to fill the spot or take back bad contracts in addition to futures to secure the tank. I don’t see it
