Do you like this one better?
This article's author is the Canadian Press. "In an email to The Canadian Press, Ferris confirmed media reports that two of his clients, Montreal Canadiens defenceman Victor Mete and Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett, have asked to be traded."

That’s exactly the article I was mentioning
Canadian Press is not a named author
Until there is a direct, substantiated quote, there isn’t one
Anyways, I’m not interested in discussing this further

I guess my closing statement on the whole thing is: asking your agent to look into having yourself traded elsewhere is significantly different than “demanding a trade and quitting on your team”. Which was the most common narrative on CP spun out of this mostly non-story.
A player felt like he wasn’t getting the ice time he thought he deserved. I will 100% agree that he hasn’t earned it. However, now that everyone has seen this season play out... doesn’t that whole country club attitude shed a bit of light on Bennett’s complaints? There is a lot that goes on behind closed doors. Maybe he was sick of players getting ice time while doing nothing to earn it on and off the ice... like our top line. There has clearly been a rift in the dressing room for years, are we just supposed to pretend that has nothing to do with Bennett’s request to his agent?

Okay, fair enough. I hope I haven’t made your day worse. I probably should’ve dropped it earlier.
And you’re right. It is hearsay, double for the Richmond News and single for this article. And I don’t think I’m gonna be able to find you “non-hearsay” because I don’t think Darren Ferris ever did an interview like he did after the Marner request.

Sam’s agent or lawyer (Ferris), is in fact, given authority by Sam , who is one of the principal parties, to act and speak on his behalf.

In fairness, I think he understands agency. I just think he wanted to hear or read something directly from Darren Ferris himself.

Only a fraction of deals GMs bat around ever get done.

So what is he leaving to Treliving and his agent if he didnt want a trade?
I mean it's OK that he wants/wanted out....this happens all the time in the NHL but rarely made public.
Now maybe with the coaching change since all this happened, he has changed his tune, which is also OK but lets not try and re-write what is plainly obvious.

I think Ward knew he was gone anyway. No way Tre would've fired him and hired Sutter on that night and surprised everyone. The way I see it, all the coaches saw Bennett as he is, just a floater who is marginal 4th liner and they either scratched him, tried putting him on different lines and yet, he's usually going in and out of 3rd and 4th lines. After Bennett demands a trade through his agent, that's when all hell breaks loose. Ward was probably told to showboat Benny to try and see if he can get traded. He looked good for one to two games and becomes his usual self. Ward likely knew his time was up anyway and just coached like any coach, even if that meant scratching Bennett, for which he did in his last game with the Flames.
Either way you look at it, Bennett was good enough to watch the game but I don't think he's a good enough player that a coach and GM would sit just to be traded. I just find it hilarious that there's still people on this board who thinks Bennett still has that potential to be a player in the caliber of say Tkachuk or a Backlund or even Ryan. He's a healthy scratch from time to time it's because he's not that much of a contributor most of the time. If he was actually any useful and demanded a trade, you don't think half a dozen team would've put out an offer and he'd be off the Flames hands weeks, months, and years ago?
Sutter, when he came in, said all the right things about working with Bennett and all. He's given him lots of opportunity to show himself. Yet, Bennett has mostly gone back to 3rd and most recently down to 4th line. Sutter's not stupid. You can only do so much and the rest is up to the guy to come out of that mold. Yet, the mold that Bennett is in is what we've been seeing from his second year onward. We all love to see Bennett with his incredible 4-goal night in his rookie year, but that ain't gonna happen again.

Treliving completes more trades than most GMs.

I think you've already got this, but that's just a paraphrase, and we don't know if it accurately depicts the nuance.
It's much ado about nothing. We can only imagine how the communicatian between Friedman and Ferris played out, but the agent was obviously very specific in his language, and the statement should have been a surprise to no one.

For sure its a paraphrase, and I agree that there are definitely degrees of trade request. I guess you'd have everything from "trade me immediately because I will not play another game for this coach" to "if you get a good offer for me, I would be willing to go." To me, the Bennett trade request was somewhere in the middle.

Just curious how you arrived at this. I looked at a few GM's who came in around the same time as BT. Kekalainen in Columbus has several months more tenure and he has more trades than BT. Chayka did too.
Sakic, Nill, Shero, Gorton about the same amount of trades and came around the same time. Maclellan maybe a little fewer.
Cheveldayoff is really only GM who clearly seems to make fewer trades.
Anyway was just curious if this was statement of fact or more of a general sense. After five minutes of looking, Treliving doesn't seem to be more active than most other GM's. Although I'm sure we'd agree number of trades not all that meaningful. Brandon Davidson for future considerations doesn't mean all that much.

I didn’t crunch all the numbers, but there really aren’t all that many significant trades in the NHL these days, and Treliving has made some big ones. The Flyers, another team I follow, have barely made any significant trades in the last six years - Schenn is about it. League pundits like Friedman also comment that Treliving isn’t afraid to go out and make trades.

Not at all. Just had to get some work done, and that was meant in a matter of fact way. All good

Yet he doesn't get traded done, he is just in on everything supposedly. So you were talking out of your butt there.

Out of interest I started to look and thought of counting off this site: http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/GM_list
But I saw so many bad ones I just stopped

volume? Tre for sure has higher volume than most
32 trades since he took over
Not much recently though which is probably why the pushback
quality is also a mixed bag

Just off the top of my head, Vegas, Tampa, Colorado (before recently), Nashville, NY Rangers, Columbus, and San Jose seem to make a lot of bigger trades.
It kind of seems like bigger markets and prime destinations in general are more likely to make big name signings and trades.
Winnipeg, before recently, hardly made any trades. NY has a long history of trading for superstar players.
It might have as much to do with the city as the GM. Columbus is often forced into big trades.
