I think he might actually be a really good fit in Tampa. My money is on VAN or EDM though if he makes to UFA

I always thought that one day he would find his way to McDavid-his former linemate.

In what world is Bennett making the case for being a solid 3rd line center?
Are we actually having this conversation again?

Maybe on an island here but I think the team should protect him, if he can resurrect his career, at around 2.5 million, to me he would have a tremendous value on the 3rd or 4th line.
The core needs to be gutted, I got no problem leaving players like Backlund, Lucic, Gio exposed. Heck Anderssen has not impressed me at all.this year, would be a chance to get out of the contract.
One thing I do like about the flames, is that for all their lack of talent issues on the team at least slot of the under achieving players will be gone in 2-3 years, I will take that over some other teams current rebuilds, ie San Jose, buffalo( that Skinner contract is sooooo bad)

The only reason Bennett is getting an offer of $2.5M is because he has to be qualified at that number. He will be exposed in the expansion draft, won't get picked and the team is stuck with pouty Sam Bennett for another year.

Fresh off Facebook lol. Bennett recinded trade request
"I’m happy playing under Darryl," said Bennett to Sportsnet earlier this week. "I think I’ve gotten more opportunity and I’ve been able to play my game a little bit more."
When asked if he wants to stick with the Flames, Bennett made it crystal clear that he wants to be a Flame for life.
"Ya, absolutely," he said. "I want to have a big role and important role to help this team win. When I’m playing more I’m playing better and can help the team have success. It definitely makes it fun and makes me enjoy coming to the rink when I have a big role. I’ve definitely been in a better mindset."
For what it's worth, Sutter is a big fan of Bennet himself.
"I’ve been happy with Sam," said Sutter. "I think he’s played all three positions for us. I’ve been able to get him into some penalty killing situations, which I think he could thrive in going forward. Taking faceoffs for us. He’s played hurt and he’s played with some pace to his game."

Guess I feel like we know the answer to what he is, and is not. Which is a third or forth line winger.
We convince ourselves every year that if this or that happens then Bennett will put it all together. It never happens.
Then add in him wanting out. Like he earned a spot in the top six. Most of the Flames have been terrible this year and in relation to the top six he's still not in the mix.

Just curious, I don't understand the point you are making. He is playing where he should be?

Hockey player says hockey player things, more at 11.
But, maybe it wouldn't be the craziest thing for them to work on an extension. I've always thought it would make sense for Bennett to hit UFA and find the best situation for him, but with such an unusual off-season to come maybe he'd be better with a bird in the hand.
Duclair is different in a lot of ways, but it took a long time for him to find a seat, and it was only 1x1.7M despite his far superior numbers.
The case for the Flames is simple - they extend the life of their asset, which they could still trade (or a better return at a lower AAV, perhaps even retained) or lose in the ED.
Bennett gets some certainty/security, and maybe avoid the hassle of relocation. He might also see Galchenyuk as a cautionary tale that the grass isn't necessarily greener...
1x1.25? Even 1.5 wouldn't be the end of the world.

Bennett is not going to sign a one year deal and then be left unprotected for expansion draft.

Maybe they agree to not be qualified and he will become a UFA making it less likely to be picked by Seattle?
Who knows.
I’ve finally accepted the fact he will never become anything significant offensively and with the teams overall disappointing performance this year the list of players I would be pissed if traded has shrunk so if he ends up elsewhere so be it.

What choice does he have?
Why would he not want to play in Seattle?

Not get a QO and become UFA and he has all the choices.
I would be fine if they could get him here on a 2 year 1.25 deal but i dont think there is any chance he would agree.
Someone will give him 2+ in free agency.

Whether he gets a QO or not is not his choice.

I understand that but you really think the Flames are giving him 2.5 going forward?
Honestly i dont think he is here in 5 days anyhow, so moot point.

probably, if you were selling a house would you say
"this house sucks we really want to get rid of it"
or
"this has been a great house, no rush at all to sell it we might even keep it"

Duclair was coming off back to back ~20g seasons and could only muster 1.7M. Of course by representing himself he effectively took himself out of the free agency frenzy, but the same risk could exist for Sam.
SEA has to be the best destination...a team full of 8th best forwards, few of whom will be centres.
I bet teams like ANA, LAK, MIN, VAN, and EDM would probably be interested in Sam, but they'd have other priorities first.
In the scenario of extending him I don't think it's likely he stays beyond next TDL, but he might garner a better return with a lower AAV.

If this deadline and the off-season goes the way I hope, I’d just qualify Bennett and get a 1 year deal in. Salary cap shouldn’t be a problem next year, and may as well pay a bit to see if Sutter can’t make something of Bennett.
Bennett as the #2 centre behind Backlund as the #1? Let Bennett give maximum effort and see where everything goes.
The hope next year should be that we lose as many games as possible while not committing any dollars long term. Benny on a 1-year deal, while Monahan is traded elsewhere gives us a 1-2 punch at centre that should help us land in the bottom-5.
