Devils waive Nick Merkley
https://twitter.com/user/status/1379827087972925446
Arizona traded Merkley to New Jersey in the Taylor Hall trade just last year.
He's a 23-year-old former first round pick who's been playing RW in NJ and who has six points in 13 games this year.
These are the types of free reclamation projects Calgary maybe should be looking at... no need to give up assets and he's a guy with some NHL ability and pedigree.
Plus I think Calgary has pretty high priority. Should they look at claiming him?

Forgot to mention — pretty sure Merkley was Dube's linemate in Kelowna.

Sure why not. Worst case scenario is that you waive him later.
I was all for taking Svechnikov and this is pretty much a similar situation, although completely different players of course.

It's not the craziest idea in the world, especially if there's any kind of trade market for Leivo or Ritchie.

I put this in the Trade thread-Merkley is a pretty rough skater. That's the major reason why he's never stuck in the NHL. Do we need another small, slow guy?

Where are we on the waiver list? He seems like he should be claimed, and I could see us putting in a claim, but I'm curious who is ahead of us

Pretty sure it's only Buffalo, Ottawa, Anaheim, and Detroit.

RH RW (Im confused since Elite Prospects has him as RH, and Hockey DB & NHL.COM has him as LH, but l'm pretty sure he shoots right)
Calgary Kid
Played under Huska in Kelowna
Lots of potential but has been derailed by injuries.
Worth a shot for sure. Way better reclamation project than Ritchie or Simon.

I mean it's pretty simple.
Claim him and see what he can do.

I feel like the devils would have passed him around for a trade to everyone, conditional 7th or whatever, so he likely passes.

We should find out what he's up to. He'd still be the first line RW today.
