Yeah Doc is so consistent night-in, night-out... he's not an issue at all.

Meh. Flames will have plenty of junk to expose at the expansion draft with or without those guys.

Why are we not talking about trading Gio? Wouldn't Florida love to have someone to fill the shoes of Ekblad for a playoff run? I know the contract is prohibitive, but Treliving should be exploring the idea.

As a fan, I'd love to have a team to cheer on in the playoffs and if Gio went somewhere, that's my new team, at least temporarily.

If we’re looking to rebuild, you figure out a way to make Backlund be the most enticing player for Seattle to take.

It’s going to be weird not acquiring a depth D-man that on balance we probably don’t need this trade deadline.

Hopefully Brad can maximise on the “Playoff” Bennett aspect and get a decent pick for him...

I think you answered your own question.

His contract extending into next season is prohibited.

Not if calgary retains some dough. Florida should be going all in this year and next. Gio as a 5/6 would probably thrive and be a really nice piece. Quennville was hired for these scenarios to happen, and they're happening. Florida's window is the next 2-3 years.

Edm will be about to offer a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Holloway for Palmieri. Someone will snag Palm just before, so Edm will offer the same package in desperation for somebody who had already passed through waivers at least once already this season.

EDIT: ...and still miss the playoffs.

I think they’re talking about the Avalanche of 16/17 where they put up 22 wins, and then selected Makar 4th overall.

Colorado had pretty much all of their core team being young and improving, and then added Makar.

And then if that wasn't enough, they added Bowen Byram at #4.
And Grubauer, a possible Vezina winner, for a 2nd. Who was extended to a great contract.

Things can come together quickly with proper asset and cap management.

Backlund already is the most enticing forward for Seattle to take.

They’re not finding four centres better than Backs for free.

Well, let's be honest: Colorado is a completely different team without winning a draft lottery, and picking one of the best players in the world.

They were also the 2nd worst team in the league that season, so while yes - it’s “luck” but they put themselves in the situation to get lucky. The worst team in the league that year was Florida, who got Barkov.

As of today the Flames would draft 7th in this summer’s draft (pending the lottery). The goal for the remainder of this season should be to bottom out as hard as they can.

This is where the general manager needs to step in and take the feet out from under the players in my opinion. They didn’t get it done, now put the team first. Gain some assets, and hope that the team tumbles further down the standings and improves their lottery odds. It’s ugly work, but required.

Colorado sort of went thru one rebuild where they drafted Landeskog and Duchene pretty high twice in 3 years plus got O'Reilly with their second round pick in the Duchene draft and Tyson Barrie in round 4. That first year with those two they made a surprise playoff appearance, fell back, looked on the way up again but eventually fell back pretty hard and traded off nearly everyone from that entire group except for Landeskog and drafted in a new core of MacKinnon, Raantenen, Makar plus added some other good pieces like Girard, Grubauer, Burakovski, and Kadri in trades.

Flames could be a bit like that 2013 Avalanche team was. This team would need some serious luck to win the lottery and get into a top 3 pick, but the idea of basically trading everyone else from the current team over a 3 year time frame save maybe one or two guys to have better team 7 years from now is pretty valid.
