I thought he looked fairly pumped at Sutter coming in. Less so with having to fire a guy and less so when he talked about the players.

If a contending team offers up a blue chip prospect and a high draft pick or more for Tanev. Do you sell? I know it's probably a small to no chance the flames want to move him. Nor should they as he is a warrior.

Moving a highly valued asset (as compared to a sell low case) for a fair return now with longer term upside? I think you have to look at it.

Right now anything should be for sale. If you are going to commit to a rebuild Markstrom is the only guy who would be under contract at that time and he would no longer be a key piece.
I would trade Tanev for any teams first next year. Even take back a guy with similar money and less term on his deal to do it.

After the season Tanev has had, any team with the desire to go deep in the playoffs would pay a pretty hefty ransom for him. I don't necessarily want him to leave, but it would depend on the return.

If I’m flames gm I’m looking to see what kind of offers there are out there for Gio at deadline. I do think if left unprotected that Seattle would take him. That’s $6.6 million of cap space. From there I see what offers are and see which option outweighs the other. I’m not delusional thinking that someone at deadline will take his full cap hit. Money will be coming back and it could be significant money coming back.

The guy has been unreal, but at this point it makes sense to get whatever long-term assets you can.
This team is about to be stripped down. I know ownership doesn't like to use the word 'rebuild', but they don't have much choice given the pathetic on-ice performance of the current group.

Reading between the lines, Sutter is not happy with the centres on the team.
"Their two big centremen scored goals and put the game away."
"You have to be able to play with pace, execute with pace. For some of our players, that's difficult"
I feel that Monahan's days on the team are numbered.

With the expansion draft coming up and teams tight against the cap, I can't see any major moves happening until summer. Meaning only guys I expect to maybe be on the move before the TDL are Rittich and Bennett.

Trade deadline is in exactly one week. It’s been very quiet so far, I hope the Flames can recoup some assets from this dumpster fire of a season.

With the historically awful goaltending we've had, my suspicion is that management will refuse to go to a full rebuild and try to remake things on the fly to take advantage of having a good goalie for the next few years.

With the two Canucks games cancelled this week (April 8th & 10th), tonight is the last game before the deadline for the Flames. Perhaps there are moves coming after tonight. Will be interesting to see who sits tonight as well.

I think you are right, I just don't know how Calgary can do a retool when their most likely tradable assets (Monny, Johnny, Gio) are playing poorly with decreasing term left.

Yeah. In “hockey trades” what are we getting back for those two? We’re definitely not going to be improving the high end talent of this team without including high value assets in picks and prospects to improve on a Johnny or a Sean.
The best hope this team has is to acquire some recently drafted players and picks. That seems like the quickest way to actually improve the team. I don’t think trading Gaudreau for Konecny improves this team next year (...if we could even get him). I don’t think trading Monahan for uh...uh...I can’t even imagine what we’d get for Monahan. I’m not sure we should be selling Monahan because his value has to be quite poor, and we’ve got the benefit of some term left on his deal - although trading Monahan for the sake of change may be right the path.
Gaudreau and Giordano are the big tickets that need to be moved in my eyes, and retaining 50% of their salaries seems like a perfect way to maximize the return.

I figure they have to retain for anyone unless they trade Lindholm. Monahan they could possibly retain less because his contract is generally better than Gio and Gaudreau. It stings that you pay them to play next year as well, though. Ryan can easily be moved with retention. He’s a good add for a PO team, with salary the only impediment. I suppose Bennett could find a home, or Tkachuk.
Depending on the need you could move some of the journeymen. Stone or Nesterov only because veteran D always seem to have attraction at the TDL because teams are running hurt. Although the existence of the taxi squad. lessens this to some degree.

Maybe our players would do the same if they weren't confined to a 10' space from the boards? Sutter needs to own this just as much as the players. He's trying to get them to play a game of dinosaur hockey that doesn't work in this NHL era and is forcing square pegs into round holes. Use the talent you have and devise a style and game plan where they can be successful. Those two big centers are successful because they play in a system where the game is not constrained by "owning the wall" and grinding it out. The middle of the ice is where goals happen. The Flames spend 90% of their game within 10 feet of the boards. Maybe that's why they can't score?

Sure, add him to the list too.
All in all, we're looking at mid to late round picks for all those guys. Maybe a second rounder for Bennett? He does have a good playoff history.

I fully expect a couple players shipped out for picks at the deadline, nothing more nothing less.
Think Bennet for a 3rd, or Rittich for a 3rd type deals.
I’m ok with that, it’s all about the draft at this point. Both the accumulation of picks and the possibility of a much bigger trade at the draft.
