I'm heading out to Drum today. I'll report back on the performance of the sub 70's during normal golf play. What is the general consensus here on Drum? I find people love it or hate it. I am indifferent, think it's fun once a year or so.

I like it, but the back is pretty gimmicky. It's fun, but I played it once and found that there were quite a few holes that I'd play differently after seeing them.

I played Woodside in Airdrie yesterday for my first round of the year. Pretty windy and cold for the front nine but the back nine was beautiful. Shot a 45+42.

Some NSFW material for people who's short game isn't up to snuff, heading into the season.

Super impressed with the Sub70 irons and hybrid. I would give the woods a solid b+. The irons fly nicely, stop on a dime and the sweet spot seems better then my x’s - flies more consistently. The few miss hits flew decent enough, but the feedback from the club was noticeable.
Do not regret the purchase at all. 37-42 for a smooth 79 in the wind at Drum.

Tell me if I need to check my expectations on distance gains with new clubs.
So last week I purchased a set of cobra king sz’s. I taped up the 7, 8 and the hybrid align the the driver and 7 wood and went to the range Saturday.
I felt like I was not hitting much further with the 7 or 8 - although perhaps if I pulled the tape off I get maybe as much as 5 yards more.
I was hoping to find maybe a 10 yard gain with new clubs or is that wishful thinking?
I am mulling over taking the back the cobras and trying a set of Taylormade SIM2’s - which were my second choice when I was hitting at golf town.
I liked the cobra driver and 7 wood.

For what it is worth I got a set of Mavrik pro irons last year and easily gained a club on each iron. Went from hitting a 7 iron 165 to hitting it the distance of my old 6 iron (180). Every other iron went up by about the same so my PW thru 4 iron range was about 145-230. Led to some gapping issues with my 52 and 56 degree wedges, so my go down to a 50 and a 54 this year. If you are looking for distance out of your irons, I would give those irons a try.

I played there on Thursday and the course was in decent shape considering how early it is. The wind was atrocious though, and by the end I really didn’t care and just wanted to be done. I basically never feel that way, but that was particularly brutal!

Played 7 rounds so far this year, which is about as much as I played the last two years combined. Shot 89 on Friday which ties my career best. Last five rounds have all been 92 or under, which is good for me. My goal is to get to an 18 for the year. Using the Golf Logix app which I think is pretty decent for $12/ month.

Probably more fun when they're not at the 18th at Augusta in a playoff with your opponent on the green, though.

I would take that any day of the week.

I mean, it isn't a big deal if it was just any day of the week. It's just run-of-the-mill member play those days.

I usually have about three rounds a year at bluedevil that widdle down to "I just want this to end because of the wind".

Playing Speargrass tomorrow for the first round of the year. Just hope it's not a windy day.
Regripped all of my clubs in the garage this afternoon. Took me about 30 minutes to do all of them.

Played a couple 9 holes in Victoria this weekend.
Olympic View yesterday which was very difficult! Shot 60!
Today shot 44 at Cedar Hill which is exceptional for me, I've never shot under 45 nines.

I am not sure that using distance as the main criteria for selecting new irons is the best one. I would use it in tandem with forgiveness, ball flight, etc. The easiest way to gain 10 yards is by taking a longer club out of your bag. I hope that didn't sound snarky as it wasnt meant to. The reality is though that it is hard to compare irons against each other just by looking at the number on the bottom. Lofts can change between brands and even sets within a brand.
It is not unheard of for people to pick up 10 yards over their old set - but often if you look into it, their new irons have stronger lofts than their old irons so that new 7 iron has the same loft as the old 6 iron, for example. So the extra yardage is from actually just hitting a longer club.
I chase distance with my long clubs - new driver gets me 10 extra yards every single year according to the advertising! - but for the irons, all I want to know is that they are going to go the same distance every time.
But if you really do want the extra yardage at each club, then for sure go look for it. You'll find it in a set out there somewhere. What you might end up finding though is that you'll end up with a gap at the bottom end of your bag - ie. the PW that comes with the set has such a strong loft that you end up with a big gap between your PW and gap wedge or sand wedge. I think another poster mentioned that above as well.
Good luck - I hope you find a set you love.
