If you put your DH in the game the pitcher has to hit.

Not much difference between the two in terms of OBP or OPS, Panik is a left handed bat. Just playing the percentages.

Can someone verify this? I've never heard of this rule.

Kirk would have been my preferred choice as a PH.

Boy would it be nice to have Brantley DHing instead of Tellez eh?
Dolis has to be better than that. Just a terrible job today. You can't walk 3 batters in one inning against anybody, nevermind the ####ing Yankees.

If a player serving as the DH is later used on defense, he continues to bat in his same lineup spot. But for the rest of the game, his team cannot use a DH to bat in place of the pitcher. A team is also barred from using a DH for the rest of the game if the pitcher moves from the mound to another defensive position, a player pinch-hits for any other player and then becomes the pitcher, or the current pitcher pinch-hits or pinch-runs for the DH.

Correct me if I’m reading that wrong, but that would only happen if Kirk moved from DH to replace Jansen at catcher, no? If they just switched Rowdy with Kirk nothing else happens? Isn’t it just a pure DH for DH switch? If Jansen got hurt then Kirk would go from DH to catcher and then the above scenario takes place, no?

No, if a DH goes to play defense, the pitcher has to hit in the position of the player being replaced. The DH is a locked position. You can't double switch it.
This might be a better explanation from wikipedia.
Quote:
The designated hitter may be replaced as DH only by a player who has not entered the game. If a pinch hitter bats for, or a pinch runner runs for, the DH, that pinch-hitter or pinch-runner becomes the DH.[6]
The designated hitter can be moved to a fielding position during the game. If the DH is moved to another position, his team forfeits the role of the designated hitter,[6] and the pitcher or another player (the latter possible only in case of a multiple substitution) would bat in the spot of the position player replaced by the former DH. If the designated hitter is moved to pitcher, any subsequent pitcher (or pinch-hitter thereof) would bat should that spot in the batting order come up again (except for a further multiple substitution). Likewise, if a pinch-hitter bats for a non-pitcher, and then remains in the game as the pitcher, the team would forfeit the use of the DH for the remainder of the game, and the player who was DH would become a position player (or exit the game).
Unlike other positions, the DH is "locked" into the batting order. No multiple substitution may be made to alter the batting rotation of the DH. In other words, a double switch involving the DH and a position player is not legal. For example, if the DH is batting fourth and the catcher is batting eighth, the manager cannot replace both players so as to have the new catcher bat fourth and the new DH bat eighth. Once a team loses its DH under any of the scenarios discussed in the previous paragraph, the double switch becomes fully available, and may well be used via necessity, should the former DH be replaced in the lineup.

i can't edit for some reason.. yes KootenayFlamesFan. you can only swap DH for DH. So Kirk can hit for Telez and become the new DH. But the DH cannot play defense. If Kirk, as the DH, replaces Janssen, then the pitcher would have to hit 9th.

Thanks all. I've been around baseball for a long time and I didn't know that, mostly because it never comes up and nobody ever tries it. Thanks for the clarification.

I only know it because it happened to the Blue Jays ages ago. Olerud was the DH and then whoever was playing first got hurt so someone else on the field had to switch over to first because Olerud couldn't or else the pitcher would have to hit. That was the first time i heard about it.
Some crack researcher here will find it.

Personally I can't stand watching when he's pitching because of his absurdly long routine. And that's me watching him on my team! He is exactly what needs to change in baseball as sports start to die off with the younger generations.
If baseball wants to have a chance of appealing to younger fans they can't have 2 hours of crowd shots and players farting around while a pitcher goes through a 45 second routine on every pitch and pushes games to 3.5-4 hours.
Not acceptable heading into an uncertain future where kids mostly watch video games over real sports.

Based on Germán's history of domestic abuse, I would LOVE to see the Jays bats beat the crap out of him today. A professional baseball version of abuse, so to speak.
Edit: as I post that, Grichuk stays hot and hits a frozen rope for a 2 run shot.

Is the solution the tennis serve shot clock? What the penalty? A ball? Then two balls?
An aside, the Savannah Bananas are trying a new style of baseball
* No Walks..on ball 4 the runner takes off, the other team has to throw the ball to all of the other players on the field. Batter goes as far as he can
* No stepping out of the batters box once you step in
* No visits to the mound (just yell when you want to swap pitchers)
* you win an inning by having more runs, first to 5 innings wins
* fan catches a foul ball, out
Games are taking just over 90 minutes.

sure, but then you literally have to call that a different sport if this is how you play "baseball". It couldn't be a more bastardized version of the game. No thanks.

Heckuva turn there by Bichette. Could be a long-term shortstop after all?

No this isn't reasonable for MLB. Like Cali said, that's a different sport, and it sounds like a really cheesy sport to be honest.
Changing baseball is easy relative to every other sport. It has an amazing base to work off of and sooo much opportunity to shave off minutes. MLB's problem is they are traditionalists. In their eyes everything that is there now must be there for a reason.
I mean, literally ONLY focusing on a time clock for a pitcher to throw the next pitch could shave off an hour on most games, and would take no more effort than just placing the time clock in the game. That's incredible and its easy....and they won't do it until the sport starts dying and it's too late.
