I really do hope we commit to a reload philosophy here and make the most out of our star players in the trade market. I do think we will need to wait until the draft on some of the big tag players but there should be no excuse if we still have the likes of Bennett, Leivo, Ryan, Simon, Nesterov and Rittich on this team post trade deadline.

And if nobody wants these players?

As bad is this is you have to think they played more games considering the schedule this year.

That would be the only excuse really and players who fall in that category would be Simon, Leivo and Nesterov but Ryan, Bennett and Rittich should easily command a pick of some sort.

Maybe...but even at that, they gave up 4.5 goals a game...for a month.

Gusev is small, like Gaudreau small.
If the team was playing well and poised to make the playoffs, he would be a good insurance rental, but for how things stand at the moment, I don't think he moves the needle much. Adding him could have an opportunity cost if a better, and more appropriate option were to arise.

Why are we still so fixated on size with Johnny- mony? Hudler played well with them and he was a shrimp. That article last week, i thought pretty conclusively, showed that what Mony-Gaudreau needs most is a player who can carry the puck through the neutral zone and be a second option for zone entry with Gaudreau. That and a better puck moving RD.
So the question, IMO, should be if Gusev is a better puck carrier through the neutral zone than what we have and is good at zone entries? If so, we should pick him up.

Why are we talking about adding players that are a year away from UFA status? Move out the core and start again. This season is over.

My strategy going into the trade deadline and the offseason would be:
Trade UFAs That Might Have Value
Ryan, Nordstrom, Leivo, Nesterov, Rittich
RFAs to deal
Bennett
Core Pieces to trade for decent return
Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano
Roster Pieces to Build Around
Forwards: Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangiapane, Dube, Backlund (might be tough to move with his deal), Lucic (unmoveable contract IMO)
Defense: Hanifin, Tanev (could move at right price), Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington
Goalie: Markstrom
Prospects to Build Around
Forwards: Zary, Pelletier, Phillips, Pettersen, Ruzicka, Gawdin
Defense: Mackey
Goalie: Wolf
My trade proposals:
Giordano (50% retained) for Kerfoot + Robertson
Gaudreau+Bennett+Nesterov for Konecny, Gostisbehere, 2022 1st
Monahan for Lundell, Stralman (Cap Dump), Heponiemi
Roster going into next season (Not lines but more a depth chart):
NHL Forwards:
Tkachuk, Lindholm, Konecny, Mangiapane, Backlund, Dube, Kerfoot, Lucic
Top Forward Prospects:
Pelletier, Robertson, Zary, Lundell, Phillips, Ruzicka, Gawdin, Heponiemi
LD: Hanifin, Valimaki, Gostisbehere, Mackey
RD: Tanev, Anderson, Stralman, Kylington,
Goalie: Markstrom
Not the most high end talent on the team but it would end up being young, talented, and quick if you went with the young prospects that will be close to stepping in (Robertson, Pelletier, Lundell, Zary etc). Could add to it in UFA as well, and potentially with what return you get from a guy like Backlund and any other offseason moves. Guys like Stralman, and Gostisbehere could be flipped as well with less term remaining and if the Flames are willing to eat some cap.

That is not happening. If it was Ward would still be coaching and it would have been a house cleaning this summer from management down through ahl players.
Sutter will not have any part of that and i would imagine it was deeply discussed before he signed to come on board.

Then surely he can leave the organization if that's the case.
If the coach of this team dictates what we do with our players and our long-term plan, we are truly in trouble and will almost certainly never compete for the foreseeable future.

Ya I don't think Sutter calls the shots and if that's the case Flames are about to stay mediocre for another 3 or so years.

He is not dictating anything if he was getting assurances before he was signed,
Not that hard to understand is it? He would not sign unless he could be positive that they wouldnt sell everything off before he had a training camp/full season with the majority of the current roster to work with.
Of course ther will be changes, every team has those every year. But a tear down? Not happening.
I mean...he agreed to come out of retirement for a reason and i have little doubt it had much to do with money.

I'm unsure why an organization would tie its long-term strategy to whatever assurances they may or may not have made to a coach, specifically after things have since changed significantly and results are looking as poor as ever.

Huh?
What has changed?
And it isnt "long term strategy"....in fact it is very much short term.
20 more games this year and then next.
